Harmony, Voice Leading, And Drama In Three Sondheim Musicals, Adam M. Hudlow Jan 2013

Harmony, Voice Leading, And Drama In Three Sondheim Musicals, Adam M. Hudlow

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study presents an analytical approach to three works by American musical theater composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim: Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins—each of which Sondheim developed largely at the Playwrights Horizons theater in New York. Using an eclectic, neo-Schenkerian approach that draws upon recent work by pop-rock and stage music analysts, it examines the intersection of melodic and harmonic events with dramatic occurrences in the text to determine how Sondheim heightens dramatic narrative within each song analyzed. Sondheim’s work has been a fixture of the upper echelon of the Broadway musical for over half a …

Scriabin's Transpositional Wills : A Diachronic Approach To Alexander Scriabin's Late Piano Miniatures (1910-1915), Jeffrey Yunek

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Alexander Scriabin’s late music has long fascinated music theorists by its unprecedented exploration of harmony. Accordingly, many analysts have attempted to capture Scriabin’s self-professed theoretical system, in which he states, “there is not one note unaccounted for.” However, no theorist has currently developed a comprehensive system of analysis for this music. While scholars have succeeded in relating members of the same set class through maximally invariant transposition, there are persistent issues in relating members of different set classes. The variety of conflicting methods of analysis attempting to relate members of different set classes suggests the following conclusion: there is no …

"Cinematic Suite For Orchestra" And Notable Composers In The Evolution Of Film Music From Hollywood's Golden Age To The Present, Edward C. Anderson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The composition Cinematic Suite for Orchestra is composed for full orchestra. This Suite, in three parts, was inspired by the works and compositional influences of several select classical and film composers who have greatly inspired my personal aesthetic towards symphonic music as they have for many composers of my generation. This work is not necessarily intended to sound purely like the works of these earlier composers but instead, to borrow from their compositional techniques, aesthetics, and overall sonic influence as needed to serve the purpose of my own personal muses. The First Movement was inspired by the grand symphonic style …

An Original Composition, Symphony No. 1, "Eustace The Monk" And Compositional Techniques Used To Elicit Musical Humor, Samuel Howard Stokes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Part I – “Symphony No. 1 – ‘Eustace the Monk’” is based on a figure from medieval legend. Although Eustace Busket is a historically documented person that lived c.1170-1217, the exact details of his life are shrouded in legend. Many of the details of the legend of Eustace were passed down through the anonymous Li Romans de Witasse Le Moine. The legendary tale of Eustace, who is reported to have learned black magic from the devil, became a Benedictine monk in order to corrupt the monastery, and later became a mercenary pirate, is the subject matter of this five-movement dramatic …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This paper is a conductor’s analysis of Ronaldo Cadeu’s recently completed orchestral score for his ballet Crime and Punishment, with a focus on its preparation for a first public performance. Detailed score analysis reveals that Crime and Punishment is a masterfully crafted piece of music that successfully conveys the essence of Dostoyevsky’s text. Cadeu’s …

Dialogues, Dysfunctional Transitions, And Embodied Plot Schemas: (Re) Considering Form In Chopin's Sonatas And Ballades, Jonathan Edward Mitchell Jan 2012

Dialogues, Dysfunctional Transitions, And Embodied Plot Schemas: (Re) Considering Form In Chopin's Sonatas And Ballades, Jonathan Edward Mitchell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Chopin’s four Ballades — perennial favorites of audiences and performers— have proven to be problematic for analysts. At the forefront of the numerous discussions regarding their organization is an ongoing debate about their relationship to the eighteenth-century sonata, particularly if they can be understood as variants of that form or as something altogether new. It is my view that these works have tended toward the enigmatic because no one has discovered an appropriate theoretical apparatus through which to process them. In this dissertation, I view Chopin’s Ballades through a multi-tiered analytical system that draws upon three sources: the Sonata Theory …

Three Case Studies In Twentieth-Century Performance Practice, Tina Huettenrauch Jan 2012

Three Case Studies In Twentieth-Century Performance Practice, Tina Huettenrauch

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Since the middle of the twentieth century, the study of performance practice has increasingly drawn the interest of musicologists; however, despite the extensive documentation pertaining to matters of performance, the twentieth century has largely been neglected. Twentieth-century composers often annotated their scores extensively with indications of tempi, dynamics, and phrasing or included explanatory notes with detailed instructions. Supplemental records, such as diaries, transcripts of coaching sessions, and composers’ commentaries on interpretative issues further shed light on their intentions. Yet a piece is not shaped just by the score and the comments of the composer; rather, it exists diachronically, evolving over …
