An Analysis Of György Ligeti's Nonsense Madrigals, Dennis Malfatti Jan 2004

An Analysis Of György Ligeti's Nonsense Madrigals, Dennis Malfatti

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

While other contemporary composers have written works called madrigals, Ligeti's Nonsense Madrigals are truly unique as exemplified by the myriad of influences that went into their creation, the technical challenges of their performance, and in the aesthetic result, one which is incomparable to most musical compositions past or present including works by Ligeti himself. Ligeti’s compositional style in these works include the parodying of compositional techniques from the 14th century as well as the rhythmic provocativeness of jazz. The use of parody in these works is compatible with Ligeti’s choice of texts which includes literary parodies by Lewis Carroll. In …

A Study Of The Quintet For Piano And Strings By Richard Danielpour, Myung Jin Kuh Jan 2004

A Study Of The Quintet For Piano And Strings By Richard Danielpour, Myung Jin Kuh

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Richard Danielpour is recognized as one of the most successful and acclaimed composers today. His music is often described as neo-romantic: full of grand gestures, highly accessible, brilliantly orchestrated, and rhythmically powerful and exciting. His music is based on the traditions of European classical music; however, it also combines the American vernacular of the 20th century, including jazz, rock, and pop music. His special interests in metaphysics and non-Western culture, especially Zen Buddhism, are also reflected in his compositions. This study examines Danielpour’s Quintet for Piano and Strings, written in 1988. The work consists of three movements with the descriptive …

An Original Composition Symphony No. 1 "Night Symphony" And An Analysis Of Selected Traditional And Non-Traditional Elements Of Harmony In Credo By Krzvsztof Penderecki, Aaron Edward Johnson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The first part of this dissertation is an original composition Symphony No. 1 "Night Symphony." It is a three-movement work scored for large orchestra. Each of the three movements is subtitled with a descriptive aspect of a different part of the night: 1. Twilight, 2. Nocturne, and 3. Waning Darkness. The work is not a musical narrative of the night cycle and does not include night sounds. The subtitles are only meant to suggest the general mood I associate with particular stages of the night. The tempi of the movements fall into a fast-slow-fast arrangement. The outer movements are scored …

Compelled To Compose: An Introduction To The Life And Music Of Paul Basler , With A Conductor's Analysis Of Missa Kenya, Gary Packwood

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The choral literature of Paul Basler and his style are relatively unexplored. While his style is not readily identifiable, particular characteristics can be understood in their appropriate genres and cultural contexts. The compositional style of Missa Kenya features great variety, incorporating twentieth century American ‘classical’ techniques, and those based solely on indigenous tradition. This document focuses on the life, influences, and music of Paul Basler, with particular attention to his composition, Missa Kenya. A conductor’s analysis and interpretational suggestions are also provided. Several interviews were conducted by email and in person with Paul Basler, and Ronald Burrichter, the conductor for …

An Original Work: "Brothers And Sisters" And Songs From Letters By Libby Larsen : An Analysis, Andrea J. Mitternight Jan 2004

An Original Work: "Brothers And Sisters" And Songs From Letters By Libby Larsen : An Analysis, Andrea J. Mitternight

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation consists of two parts. The first part is an original composition by the author entitled "Brothers and Sisters." The orchestra piece is an expressive program symphony in three movements. The first movement features sections of driving rhythms and fluctuating meters. Two new sections, more reflective and stable in nature, offset the more volatile sections. Herein lie moments of steady and unchanging rhythms and a sense of constancy. The movement ends with a return of the furious instability heard in the previous sections. Unlike the first movement, the second begins with a more somber mood. The introduction exposes the …

A Performer's Guide To Virgil Thomson's Five Songs From William Blake, Andrew David Whitfield Jan 2004

A Performer's Guide To Virgil Thomson's Five Songs From William Blake, Andrew David Whitfield

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Though perhaps his most well-known vocal works might be his operas, Four Saints in Three Acts and The Mother of Us All, American composer Virgil Thomson (1896-1989) did write nearly seventy songs for voice and piano, including several important song cycles. One of these cycles, the Five Songs from William Blake, represents an impressive composition for the baritone voice. Unfortunately, much of the previous scholarship about Thomson did not award these Blake songs adequate attention, nor was it able to draw upon many of the primary sources about Thomson’s life and work that are now available. The purpose of this …

The Organ Works Of Fela Sowande: A Nigerian Organist-Composer, Godwin Simeon Sadoh Jan 2004

The Organ Works Of Fela Sowande: A Nigerian Organist-Composer, Godwin Simeon Sadoh

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Fela Sowande (1905-1987) has a huge compositional output including orchestral and vocal works. However, his organ music outnumbered the totality of his compositions. His organ pieces represent a truly intercultural music in which distinct tripartite cultural idioms are evident—Nigerian, African American and European. Works of this nature serve as creative source materials for aspiring composers, performers, scholars, music educators, and students in Africa and the world. This composer, folklorist, and music educator was born into a well-known music family in Nigeria. He was active in radio broadcasting, Yoruba folklore and mythology, indigenous music research, Nigerian art music, performance, orchestral conducting, …

Developing A Four-Mallet Marimba Technique Featuring The Alternation Of Mallets In Each Hand For Linear Passages And The Application Of This Technique To Transcriptions Of Selected Keyboard Works By J.S. Bach, Thomas Allen Zirkle Jan 2003

Developing A Four-Mallet Marimba Technique Featuring The Alternation Of Mallets In Each Hand For Linear Passages And The Application Of This Technique To Transcriptions Of Selected Keyboard Works By J.S. Bach, Thomas Allen Zirkle

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The goal of this study is to develop a four-mallet marimba technique that utilizes alternation within each hand on linear passages, then apply this technique to selected keyboard works of J. S. Bach. This paper provides a method of training the hands for this type of alternation and will hypothesize a conception of hand positions as a method of facing the visual/spatial logistics issues of marimba performance. A performance annotation chapter will then apply the alternation sticking, and its resultant positional concepts, to three new transcriptions of J. S. Bach's inventions and a prelude and fugue from his Well-Tempered Clavier …

Matthaeus Pipelare's "Fors Seulement Chanson (Ii)" And Its Related Motet And Mass Performance Editions And Commentary, George H. Black, Jr.

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Matthaeus Pipelare was a composer from the southern Netherlands who flourished in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Except for the little more than two years he spent as choirmaster for the Confraternity associated with the Cathedral of St. John in 's Hertogenbosch, located in Northern Brabant, almost nothing is known of his professional or personal life. Yet writers of the period hailed his skill and placed him in the same company as such well-known composers as Josquin, la Rue, Brumel, and Isaac. A small but excellent body of the composer's works survive in manuscripts and early prints housed …

The most significant portion of this collection is extracted from Müller's opera Kaspar der Fagottist. This constitutes the last 15 arias found in Druschetzky's arranged collection of 42 Arias mentioned previously. Included is a presentation of …

The Solo Style Of Jazz Clarinetist Johnny Dodds: 1923 - 1938, Patricia A. Martin Jan 2003

The Solo Style Of Jazz Clarinetist Johnny Dodds: 1923 - 1938, Patricia A. Martin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to explore the personality, background, influence and playing style of Johnny Dodds (1892-1940), a New Orleans jazz clarinetist. Jazz is an art form that has been passed down aurally for over a hundred years. Although the development of jazz and the performers who played it have been the subject for numerous jazz historians, there are still scant resources available for a musician to learn jazz clarinet style. The ease with which a musician can emulate an early jazz clarinetist depends on the amount of time devoted to listening and emulating whatever recordings are available. …

Frank Ferko's The Hildegard Motets: A Conductor's Preparatory Guide, David Neil Childs Jan 2003

Frank Ferko's The Hildegard Motets: A Conductor's Preparatory Guide, David Neil Childs

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The music of Hildegard of Bingen has received much attention from Frank Ferko in the past decade, but his interest in the medieval mystic has not stopped there. At the heart of his intense affection for her music are the wonderful visions she expressed through this particular medium, but also through her vivid, and at times, abstruse, poetry. His Hildegard Organ Cycle (1996), a set of ten symphonic meditations on the visions from De operatione Det, and his Missa O Ecclesia: Communion (1999), are both examples of instrumental works that bear direct reference to the twelfth-century abbess' writings. The Hildegard …

A Structured Content Analysis Of Five Contemporary Etude Books For The Violin, Michael Kim Buckles Jan 2003

A Structured Content Analysis Of Five Contemporary Etude Books For The Violin, Michael Kim Buckles

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The use of etudes has long been a time-honored device in developing, shaping, and expanding the technical skills of the violinist. Certain etude books, most notably those by Kreutzer, Rode, and Dont, have become standard. Yet, these classic etude books prove to be insufficient for the preparation of atonal, contemporary literature. Individual accounts by violin scholars and pedagogues indicate that there is a major void in contemporary etude literature for the violin, yet when the totality of what violin scholars and pedagogues have written over time is considered, it appears by numbers alone that no void exists today. While certainly …

An Old Form Newly Clothed: Exploration And Conductor's Analyses Of Morten Lauridsen's Madrigali: Six "Fire-Songs" On Italian Renaissance Poems, C. Leonard Raybon, Jr.

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Madrigali: Six “Fire-Songs” on Italian Renaissance Poems, by Morten Lauridsen, was written for the University of Southern California Chamber Singers and published in 1987. The cycle has enjoyed much success. It has been recorded commercially six times and has been heard at the prestigious American Choral Directors Association Conventions. However, until now, sixteen years after the cycle’s composition, a much-deserved, comprehensive assessment of the cycle has not been attempted. The cycle is a set of six Italian Renaissance poems that involve the image of fire as an element of Romantic love. This metaphor was often used by the highly emotional …

Text And Structure In Schoenberg's Op. 50, And An Original Composition, Symphony #1, Thomas, Jr. Michael Couvillon

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Part One of this document provides an analytical study of Schoenberg's final opus, Op. 50, three religious choral works written in the serial style: Driemal Tausend Jahre, Op. 50a (1949), De Profundis, Op. 50b (1950), and Modern Psalm, Op. 50c (1951). This study is divided into five chapters: an introduction, a conclusion, and a chapter of analysis for each of the three pieces. Analysis of these pieces reveals three significant conclusions: 1) Schoenberg consistently incorporates areas of relative consonance and pitch emphasis into his serial structures; 2) these areas of pitch emphasis, together with other musical devices are used to …

"The Neumeister Collection Of Chorale Preludes Of The Bach Circle": An Examination Of The Chorale Preludes Of J. S. Bach And Their Usage As Service Music And Pedagogical Works, Sara Ann Jones

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

One of the most significant discoveries of the twentieth century was the finding of an unpublished compendium of German Baroque keyboard music in 1982 in the archives of the John Herrick Music Library, Yale University, by musicologists Christoph Wolff and Hans-Joachim Schultz and Yale University librarian Harold E. Samuel. The collection, which was entitled LM 4708: THE NEUMEISTER COLLECTION OF CHORALE PRELUDES OF THE BACH CIRCLE, contains eighty-two previously unknown chorale preludes by several prominent German Baroque organists including Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706), Johann Michael Bach (1648-1694), Johann Christoph Bach (1642-1703), and Johann Sebastian Bach (1658-1750). Historically, it is an important …

A Model For Evaluation Of Selected Compositions For Unaccompanied Solo Trumpet According To Criteria Of Serious Artistic Merit, Michael Craig Bellinger Jan 2002

A Model For Evaluation Of Selected Compositions For Unaccompanied Solo Trumpet According To Criteria Of Serious Artistic Merit, Michael Craig Bellinger

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This document presents a pilot study for evaluating the serious artistic merit of unaccompanied solo trumpet literature. The model for use in the study was derived from the efforts of two wind band literature researchers, Acton E. Ostling, Jr. and Jay W. Gilbert. Ostling wrote his dissertation in 1978 and Gilbert replicated and updated the research in 1993. The primary element of the Ostling and Gilbert studies was a carefully defined collection of ten criteria used to evaluate the quality of each work. A 5-point Likert scale was the unit of measurement. The outcome of this adaptation was a rank …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Lee Hoiby’s Concerto No. 2 for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 33, completed in 1980, is a welcome addition to the piano concerto repertory. The concerto was first performed June 6, 1980, in Chicago by Lee Hoiby with the American Chamber Symphony conducted by Robert Frisbie. This concerto contains the usual three movements and reflects many stylistic traits of late Romantic music. The purpose of this paper is to provide a stylistic and analytical examination of Lee Hoiby’s Concerto No. 2 for Piano and Orchestra, Op.33. The paper is organized into three chapters. The first chapter includes biographical information about Hoiby, …

Alban Berg's Filmic Music: Intentions And Extensions Of The Film Music Interlude In The Opera Lula, Melissa Ursula Dawn Goldsmith Jan 2002

Alban Berg's Filmic Music: Intentions And Extensions Of The Film Music Interlude In The Opera Lula, Melissa Ursula Dawn Goldsmith

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The music composed to accompany the film in Berg’s Opera Lulu--the “Film Music Interlude” (FMI)--is the subject of this study. Although this is film music, and Berg wrote his own Film Music Scenario, scholars have ignored writings about film theory and film music in their historical and analytical treatments of the FMI. How do writings about film theory and film music apply to the analysis and exploration of historical and social contexts of the FMI, and what musical and extramusical intentions and extensions can be drawn from the FMI? Some answers come to light while exploring sources containing Berg’s correspondence …

Rediscovering Frédéric Chopin's "Trois Nouvelles Études", Qiao-Shuang Xian Jan 2002

Rediscovering Frédéric Chopin's "Trois Nouvelles Études", Qiao-Shuang Xian

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Frédéric Chopin’s Trois Nouvelles Études (Three New Études) were composed in 1839 at the request of François Fétis and Ignaz Moshceles for inclusion in a new and elaborate piano teaching method. While these new studies are less dramatic and brilliant than Chopin’s two previous sets of Études, op. 10 and 25, they are no less concerned with expressive musical qualities and they are of equal artistic merit to any of Chopin’s earlier Études. The monograph’s five chapters deal with specific aspects of these works. Chapter One traces the historical background of the Three Nouvelles Études. Chapter Two is devoted to …

"Los Motz E.L So": Words Melody, And Their Interaction In The Songs Of Folquet De Marseille, Nancy Ellen Washer Jan 2002

"Los Motz E.L So": Words Melody, And Their Interaction In The Songs Of Folquet De Marseille, Nancy Ellen Washer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Although the poems of the troubadours have been extensively studied almost since they were first composed and the troubadours themselves indicate that they tried to create interactions between the melodies and the words, the melodies and the interactions between the poems and melodies in the complete songs have been examined much less intensively. In this dissertation I delve into the songs of the late twelfth-century troubadour Folquet de Marseille whose thirteen songs surviving with their melodies provide a varied collection of a suitable size to permit intensive analysis of poetic and musical compositional practices and the interactions between the two. …

The Works Of Manuel Quiroga: A Catalogue, Ana Luque Fernandez Jan 2002

The Works Of Manuel Quiroga: A Catalogue, Ana Luque Fernandez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Manuel Quiroga Losada (1892-1961), violinist, composer, and artist, was one of the foremost figures of the first half of the 20th century. This study tries to bring to light his musical legacy, a long overdue task. Until now, all attempts to rediscover the figure of Quiroga have centered mainly on his career as a violinist, his recordings or his paintings, however not on his compositions. This document is an inventory of the forty-four pieces for violin solo, violin and piano, and violin and orchestra written by Quiroga. Manuel Quiroga mainly wrote for the violin in the form of short pieces …
