Jussi's Century: The Very Human Voice Of A Pure Musician, Stephan Hastings Oct 2021

Jussi's Century: The Very Human Voice Of A Pure Musician, Stephan Hastings

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

In the history of Western music, the 20th century is the first in which the most important instrumentalists dedicated themselves primarily to the compositions of others, while the performance freedom granted to the great singers becomes steadily more limited due to detailed notation and the iron control of conductors. But it is also the first in which the interpreter can leave evidence of his own creativity through the media of sound recording, And since a disk is a document which is much richer in information and communicative potential than a written score, it seems right to me that the most …

How I Came To Encounter, Admire And Finally Worship Jussi's Great Art, Tom Hines Oct 2021

How I Came To Encounter, Admire And Finally Worship Jussi's Great Art, Tom Hines

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

For many of his admirers, Jussi Bjorling reigns supreme: in the world of classical singing. Like other Jussiphiles, I am continually heartened by stories of critical acclaim and admiration for his art, not only from music critics but also from informed colleagues who performed by his side on the opera stage. This justifies in a sense my own commitment to his greatness that began very early in my life, at 16 years of age. I still remember with great clarity that evening when I heard, with astonishment, the last half of "Che gelida manina'' (the 1952 recording)" that was being …

Caruso Vs Bjorling?, Carl Friedner

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

Geirr Oppi's article in the previous issue of the Scandinavian JB Sallskap's Tidning awakens thoughts and causes objections. What's the sense of trying to decide who of the world-famous tenors, Enrico Caruso and Jussi Bjorling, was the better singer?

Joseph Calleja "Honored" To Become Jbs Advisor, Dan Shea

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja sang two iconic roles this past year at Lyric Opera of Chicago. Puccini's Rodolfo in March and Verdi's Alfredo ill November-December. The Tribune said of him in LA boheme , "The tenorial sound he poured out was gleaming, even, and powerful, its quick vibrato apt for conveying Rodolfo's passionate and volatile nature. He made the most of his big aria ... " I was there for the last performance (with three JBS pals from Paso Robles) und especially enjoyed the energy of his Act 3 arioso as "'ell as the beautifully sculpted mezza voce lines of …

Polymath Richard England To Join Jbs Advisory Board, Dan Shea

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

In architectural circles. Malta's Richard England is famous for his work in the Mediterranean region where his buildings and designs have earned him numerous international awards. He also is a sculptor, published artist, poet, and philosopher whose work is widely admired, as you can see by going to any internet search engine and entering his name (with Malta, to gee to the right RE). But what brought him to my own attention first were his essays about opera and great singers published in internet sites like Grandi-Tenori and its online successor Opera Vivra (recommended!).

Working For Jussi, Bertil Hagman Oct 2021

Working For Jussi, Bertil Hagman

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

For the final vignette in this memorial book let us ask some of those at the Royal Opera, who over a number of years saw Jassi Bjorling develop from the poor but talented dalmas into the world famous tenor, what it was like to work with and for him. Their opinions are variations on the one theme; a god-given voice, a musical genius, a conscientious and humble artist, and a whole-hearted friend.

Concerts On Ljustero, Hugo Theorell Oct 2021

Concerts On Ljustero, Hugo Theorell

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

My acquaintance with Jussi Bjorling was so sporadic that it hardly entitles me to contribute to this memorial book. It was confined to a small sphere of activity- our mutual interest in giving concerts from time to time in order to lend a band with the well-intentioned community work carried out by the population of that part of the Stockholm archipelago where we both spent so many delightful summers. But Jussi did not remain just an acquaintance to anyone -his unaffected, genial nature made him immediately a friend.

With Jussi In Private Life, Teddy Nyblom

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

The Royal Court Singer. the people's singer, the master singer and the internationally renowned tenor - Jussi Bjorling has been praised in all manner of superlatives. Of his grandly evident Swedishness and sincere love for his country, many have spoken in the most glowing terms. Allow me now, after all these justified plaudits, to take a look at Jussi "in his shirt-sleeves" and relate a little of what he was like in everyday life.

The Voice Of Velvet, Sven Salen Oct 2021

The Voice Of Velvet, Sven Salen

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

Jussi Bjorling-during the last few decades that name has flown out on wings of song over the whole world: an ambassador of vocal musk from the little country far up in the north on the Arctic Circle; a singer who could sing with ltalianate passion but also with a northerner's control. This must have been a spoilt individual, a true prima donna. What was he really like?

My Obsession With Opera And The Voice Of Jussi Bjorling, Andrew S. Pope Oct 2021

My Obsession With Opera And The Voice Of Jussi Bjorling, Andrew S. Pope

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

The first time I heard the voice of Bjorling was on a Bell Telephone Hour, as a teen. I tuned in late on my old 1942 Sears Silvertone radio with the "magic eye.· Bjorling was in the middle of "Sylvia," I thought his the most beautiful tenor voice I had ever heard. That really got me excited and shortly afterwards I acquired an RCA Victor catalog. It was huge and had a good "Red Seal" section where I could read about the "'golden age" voice of Jussi Bjorling.

Thrill Of A Lifetime-Meeting Jussi Backstage At Lyric Opera In 1957

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

My mind was in a happy whirl. I could not believe: it. Here I was, sitting in tenth row center seats with my parents al the Civic Opera House in Chicago. It was November 4th, 1957, and a performance of Lyric Opera of Chicago's La Boheme was about to begin. I had just learned learned during the first intermission, I was to be taken backstage to meet my musical idol, Jussi Bjorling. The house lights dimmed, the conductor took his place. I was about to hear Jussi sing in person for the first time. BuT how was I going to …
