That Jussi Bjorling's reputation as one of the greatest singers is upheld all over the globe 45 years after his death, is quite remarkable and unique. And his star is certainly not shining any less brightly in Sweden's neighbor-country, Norway. Before Christmas 1995, BMG in Norway released an anthology with Jussi Bjorling which they called "The best of Jussi." With hardly any advertising at all, it easily sold more than any other Christmas CD that year, and it has been more or less constantly in the top five best selling classical records in Norway ever since. It's Midsummer Eve in the early 60s. I have to catch a train, and I'm late. The taxi dispatcher tells me there a re no cabs available, followed by, "What's your name"? I answer "Voghera;· followed by-complete silence on the phone. Then the pleasantly suprising response: the name that moved me to the front of the taxi line was Tullio Voghera.

Frederick Schauwecker was Jussi's long-time accompanist. he worked with several singers, among them Martinelli and Crooks, before he became Jussi's colleague. In 1954 Arturo Toscanini (1873-1957) chose to include Verdi's A Masked Ball in his NBC Symphony radio broadcasts. For solists, the 87-year-old maestro had in the past few years been relying on a familiar troop of singers: Herva Nelli, Licia Albanese, Giuseppe Valdengo, Jan Peerce, Nicola Moscona, and Robert Merrill, among others. Besides providing Toscanini with a set of able-bodied voices these brave-hearts also accommodated blow-ups. Toscanini himself wanted no superstars; by now he was inclined to consider a singer as simply another instrument of the orchestra. I discovered Jussi Bjorling in 1953 when I was 18. Like George Jellinek, my awrareness came through a local record store, in my case supplied by an enthusiastic owner who played Bjorling's "Che gellda manina" for me. Though l had earlier embraced di Stefano and Tagliavini, I pretty quickly appreciated what all the JB fuss was about, and eventually I procured Jussi's complete versions of Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci, Aida. Recall our "Progress Report on Bjorling Radio Broadcasts" from p. 26 of our previous Journal issue No. 17: we've been able to secure fresh-sounding original audio recordings of Jussi's radio and television concerns from 1937 - 1956 and are moving to make most of that material to be available on a set of three CDs.

My wife Doris (Anderson} Pierson and I went to an Embassy of Sweden program on November 9, 2008 in Washington, DC presented by Harald Henrysson, then the Curator of the Jussi Bjorling Museum in Borlange, Sweden. Henrysson's program was entitled "A Jussi Bjorling Music Cafe - Jussi Bjorling in the United States: A Singing Career 1919-1960."

Two great artists of the Stockholm Opera's "iron gang" have left us with only a few weeks in between: first Erik Saeden, now Elisabeth Soderstrom. The baritone sang for the public, well-preserved vocally and youthful in mind, as late as two days before his passing. The soprano had lived more in her own world for several years. Both had given me a great deal to remember from my first years as a young opera and concert-goer and radio listener. Although there is huge slate of exciting events planned for 2011 in Sweden many of our members here may not wish to travel that far (or that expensively!).With that in mind, the Jussi Bjorling Society-USA will host a commemorative conference in St. Peter, MN. at Gustavus Adolphus College, June 22-26. We believe this will be the principal US celebration or Jussi's centennial, and we are very enthusiastic about this opportunity to meet again in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall.

Few posters were preserved from the Bjorling Quartet's tours. The Bjorling Museum owns four: two of them with date and place, from Leksand 1923 and Ystad 1926, thr other two without that information, but printed in 1923 and 1925. One poster from the Axberg Church near Orebro in 1922 is preserved in that church's fellowship hall, one is reported to exist in Halsingland but has not been found again, and one from the US tour is owned by a Bjorling relative here.

David Bjorling's first appearance after his return to Borlange was once more at Folkets Hus on Ascension Day, May 28, 1908. Frequent advertising had not raised much interest, and the audience was not large. Perhaps the reason for that was that a nearby amusement park opened the same day and its opening day party went on until late in the evening. David's varying program with arias, songs, folksongs and duets with baritone Arvid Kull was well received both by the audience and two reviewers.

The process of training to be a singer, especially an opera singer, is not very well understood by the general public. It is really a combination of learning to play music, as for other instruments, and training the body like a athlete to be the instrument. The musical part is pretty obvious. The singer is going to be expected to perform music at the highest level. The athletic part is less obvious: less obvious because if done well it is not noticeable to the audience. On October 27,2011- the coldest evening to date of the season in NYC- we were warmed physically and spiritually at the Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church by "A Centennial Tribute to Jussi Bjorling" concert and lecture. Mats Carlsson, tenor, first winner of the Scandinavian Jussi Bjorling Society Prize, Love Derwinger, pianist (also the regular accompanist of Barbara Hendricks), and Bertil Bengtsson, Scandinavian Jussi Bjorling Society co-founder, came from Sweden to preform in this series of seven concerts across the United States.

The excitement was palpable that evening, May 20, 1958, at the Royal Theatre in Stockholm. The two Swedish opera giants, Birgit Nilsson and Jussi Bjorling, would again meet al the Stockholm Opers in Tosca. The theatre was crowded, and the press present- for tonight's performance could not be anything but magnificent. But already in the first act, something happens. Bjorling cannot sustain the tone. He can only whisper per the lyrics. He had suffered one of his recurring vocal cord problems.
