Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
Music Educators find themselves ill prepared and overwhelmed during their first years of teaching for a number of reasons. Due in part to this issue, less priority is placed on string bass education for pre-service teachers. The implications this are a consistent neglect of string bass players and instruments from emerging teachers resulting in loss of students and inventory. Originally noticed in Denver Public Schools, this article will seek to identify this problem as systemic, provide scope, and offer solutions toward correcting it.

The purpose of this bibliography is to provide resources for further research into the adverse effects that the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 has had on music education in terms of funding, enrollment, and policy enactment. The ultimate goal of this is to better understand how broad policy can influence individual communities so that practical solutions for overcoming such obstacles may be better solidified and enacted by the public.

Electronic Dance Music, or EDM, is a genre of music that has enjoyed success. Although it grew out of art music in the twentieth century, EDM is considered popular music. But, is the future of EDM confined only within popular music or is there potential for it to influence or become art music? Or perhaps, is EDM already a form of art regardless of whether or not it is commonly seen as such? When people listen to a musical performance, they normally use their ears as their main source of intake for the music. How about when people watch a performance live? Do the ears have as big of an intake as visual cues? I would like to determine the specific cues that people observe while watching a musical performance in order to deem it successful. The concept of meter in music has changed throughout the centuries and many related terms and concepts (such as bar, time signature, tactus and prolatio) have either emerged or disappeared from the vocabulary of the professional musician according to the mindset of each period. Consequently, the understanding of metric organization in Renaissance music by modern musicians is compromised, and so are modern editions of said repertoire, which are based in modern music notation. One of the pinnacles of performance practice is that of creating a recognizable, individualistic sound. There are differing opinions on this matter in relation to how a trumpet sound is formed and changed through both player technique and equipment setup. The purpose of this study is to take an objective point of view on the matter, using what others have said as well as the science of sound production on the trumpet, to find a window in to how players use technique and equipment to their advantage in creating the sound they desire.

This project aims to explore the relationship between French airs de cour and English ayres (or airs) in the early 17th century. Although the first collection of airs de cour was published in 1571 by Adrian LeRoy, airs de cour were most popular was in the 17th century during the reign of Louis the XIII, with composers the Pierre Guédron, Antoine Boësset and Etienne Moulinié. The popularity of the English ayre began with John Dowland’s publication First Booke of Songes or Ayres in 1597 and continued with composers such as Thomas Campion and John Danyel. Autodeus is the name of the program that has been developed and was designed to aid guitar students in the attainment and betterment of musical notation sight reading skills. Its primary goal is to provide a very flexible tool that has the ability to generate virtually endless types of sight reading exercises at many various skill levels.
A complimentary 2 year-long comprehensive guitar sight-reading course syllabus can be implemented via Autodeus as it is capable of generating all the necessary exercises. It is able to generate these exercises quickly and efficiently through the use of a back tracking algorithm that …

This paper presents techniques developed for algorithmic composition of both polyphonic music, and of simulated jazz improvisation, using multiple novel data sources and the character-based recurrent neural network architecture char-rnn. In addition, techniques and tooling are presented aimed at using the results of the algorithmic composition to create exercises for musical pedagogy.

Since 1850, the instrument has been relatively unchanged, and has played a role in major musical style periods such as: the romantic period, the impressionist period, atonality, minimalism, ragtime, jazz, blues, country, pop, and gospel to name a few. The Guitarist Behind La Guitaromanie : Charles De Marescot, Damián Martín-Gil

The guitarist Charles de Marescot is a figure often cited when referring to the guitar mania that arose in France during the first decades of the nineteenth century. Yet very little is known about his life and musical production, which was dedicated almost entirely to the guitar. Drawing on several newly discovered documents, this article aims to understand the role of this polemical figure in the vogue for the guitar by reconstructing his whereabouts. Particular attention is given to his relationship with Hector Berlioz, with whom he conducted some minor business.

A Checklist Of Works Attributed To Charles De Marescot, Damián Martín-Gil

The musical output of Charles de Marescot (1790–1842) has never been subjected to close examination. Only a few of his compositions are featured in guitar scholarship, notably his Méthode de guitare, op. 15, and the collection of pieces entitled La Guitaromanie, op. 46. And yet Marescot was rather prolific in his time. This checklist offers, for the first time, a catalogue—albeit incomplete—of all his guitar music published in France and England, offering, if possible, locations and dates for each work.

The modest collection of manuscripts of guitar music preserved in the Senate Library of Madrid seems to provide a representative sampling of the types of guitar repertoire circulating in Spain in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Despite its small size, this corpus contains the most typical genres of the period— namely, two chamber music works for guitar with bowed string instruments, by Federico Moretti and Antonio Ximénez, a guitar duet by Pierre-Jean Porro, a solo guitar work by the mysterious señor D. G. G. M. A., and two songs with guitar accompaniment, one by Francisco Xavier Moreno and …

The color portrait of Fernando Sor which appears on the cover of this issue, not previously published as far as we know, is a hand-colored version of a printed (b&w) copy of a painting—an original portrait (now lost) of Sor—by one Innocent Louis Goubeau. Before it disappeared it was copied, in the mid-1820s, by both a lithographer and an engraver, probably in response to public demand. The lithograph, according to the British Museum exemplar now online and well documented (No. 1893,0123.45), bears the attribution “Goubeau pinxit / Lith de Engelmann / Lithod par Bordes,” which means that the original painter …
