This paper examines efforts by the Jamaican government and its surrogates to control the Rastafarian movement and reggae music. Since the 1970s, the Jamaican establishment has employed an adjustment tactic, co-optation, to transform reggae music and Rastafari into a cultural attraction. In recent years, however, Rastafarian images and reggae have become increasingly important in the promotion of Jamaica’s tourist industry. The Jamaican government and its supporters have marketed the Rastafarian movement and reggae music as part of Jamaica’s “cultural heritage.” As a result, the Rastafarian movement has declined as a political and social force in Jamaica. This thesis consists of the composition, Symphony In One Movement, accompanied by an analytical study. The piece is composed for large orchestra and has a duration of twelve minutes. It comprises three connected but distinct sections, whose contrasts suggest individual movements. Each section is based on a traditional formal structure: sonata, passacaglia, and rondo-variations. The intention was to acknowledge the traditional symphony through these formal structures while applying more modem approaches to elements such as harmony, melody, and rhythm.

There has been much controversy associated with "gangsta rap" music over the 1990's decade. This manuscript takes a closer look at "gangsta rap" music through a descriptive analysis, exploring these topics: social construction of reality, sexism, violence, community actions, and their possible negative influences on societal values. The positive and negative implications involving "gangsta rap" music are compared using lyrics from artists whose music has been in question in the past. Using a semantic differential survey and focus group interviews, "gangsta rap" music is analyzed, examining its exposure to people, possible promotion and communication of negative societal values. The life of Guillaume de Machaut (c. 1300-1377) is examined in light of his loyalty to his king, patriotism toward his country, and his religious ties to the Catholic church. Each of these, as well as his affair in middle age with a young, nineteen year old girl named Peronnelle, shaped the life and work of Machaut. The rich legacy of Machaut's prolific output of poetry and music is documented from his personal involvement in its preservation. The fixed poetic forms, the formes fixes, found in his virelais, ballades, and rondeaux became a springboard of evolution under Machaut's creative talents. …

Several past studies explore the gratifications received by mass media users. However, no former research focuses on radio as a single medium and investigates how gratifications change over a person's lifespan. This study utilized an altered version of Elliott and Quattlebaum's (1979) ten media gratification list and questioned a 14 to 60 year old sample group about the gratifications they receive from country music radio. The researcher selected country music because it is the most popular radio format today and because it provided the wide age parameters needed for the study. The lyrical content of female performed country songs was evaluated in this study. Female soloist performer's songs ranking in the top hits of each year between 1950 and 1989 were examined. After indepth research into the history of country music and the female role in country music, several songs performed by females and listed as hits between the years 1950 and 1989 were analyzed. The characteristic found in most female songs was relationships with men and family and how women react to the positive and negative aspects of these relationship.

A controversial aspect of vocal pedagogy is vocal registration or common divisions of the compass of the voice. A history of theories of registration, beginning in 1250, is compiled in chronological order. From this list, five contrasting theories are examined. Practical suggestions have been presented for use and application of this information, especially by the high school voice teacher.

The purpose of this thesis is to give an analytical description of Fabrications for Winds and Percussion. Part one of this document includes discussion, charts of information, and musical examples. Part two is the original score of the work.

The analysis describes each of the main musical elements, and relates the elements to one another. Charts are included showing relationships between different parts of the composition. Musical examples are presented to help identify and explain the main melodic ideas and accompanimental structures.

In one movement, the "Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra" is divided into five sections and a cadenza. It proposes to question the classical predominance of the solo instrument over the orchestra. A thoughtful distribution and diversification of roles performed by the soloist and the orchestra offers, as an alternative, a balanced interplay between these two protagonists.

Transcendent Journeys, Spiritual Frontiers is a musical composition for mezzo-soprano, flute, clarinet, piano, percussion, violin, violoncello, and conductor. The thesis consists of a reduced conductor's score and a written analysis. The texts are "The Moon and the Yew Tree" by Sylvia Plath, "Heart of Autumn" by Robert Penn Warren, and "Byzantium" by William Butler Yeats. The composition consists of an instrumental prelude, followed by the three poems set as a song cycle.

A study of the prelude, the oldest form of idiomatic music for keyboard instruments, offers insight into the heart of piano music. This thesis, a survey of the genre, traces the evolution of the prelude from its roots in the organ improvisations of the fifteenth century to the present century. Although the paper deals exclusively with piano preludes in the chapters after "Preludes of J. S. Bach," the chapters devoted to the organ and harpsichord preludes reveal crucial information necessary to enlightened appreciation of the development of the genre.

"Four Dreams": A Chamber Symphony, Richard Pauley

"Four Dreams" is a four-movement work for chamber orchestra. It was composed between January and May, 1985, in Charleston, Illinois. Elements from different style periods are used in the composition. Modal harmony, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages, is prevalent. Imitative devices associated with Renaissance and Baroque music are also employed, as well as such Twentieth Century techniques as dodecaphony and polychord writing. It is the first symphonic work by the composer. It is suitable for performance on the college or professional level. Its duration is approximately 18 minutes.

This thesis examines the stylistic aspects of form, harmony, tonality, melody, texture and rhythm in six twentieth century piano sonatinas. These sonatinas are arranged in chronological order from 1905 to 1949, each comprising a chapter of the thesis. There is also an appendix accompanying each sonatina which contains the formal and harmonic outline of that sonatina.
