Information received during interviews with fifteen prominent choral directors, ministers and laymen of different communities end questionnaire responses from thirty of fifty churches of the San Joaquin Presbytery of tho Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., indicates almost unanimously that there is a growing need. and also a growing awakening among the youth of the church for participation in church musical activities.

The purpose of this treatise is not so much to discover heretofore unknown facts through original research; however, certain research is planned to assist in deleting the obvious handicaps one might encounter from using faulty instruments or mouthpieces, but rather to assemble under one cover practical data that may be of value in improving intonation in the band ensemble. Various definitions of terms will be established, purposes determined, opinion and methods of teachers evaluated, conclusions reached, and highlights of other persons’ experiments that may bear upon the subject will be presented.

Throughout Germany the singing society (usually a Maennerchor), is an important institution in the cultural life of every, hamlet, town, and city. During the middle of the nineteenth century, many such societies sprang up throughout America. California had a liberal share of these during the pioneer days. Some of these organizations have persisted until the present day. The function which they performed in enriching the lives of their members, and the contribution which they made to the life of the community seems to the investigator a valid reason for investigation into their background and history.
