Kibigaku: An Analysis Of A Modern Japanese Ritual Music, Larry V. Shumway

Kibigaku is the name given to a musical tradition which arose in western Japan during the early years of the Meiji period (1867-1912). It was created by a Gagaku musician of the recently abolished Ikeda fief at Okayama, Yoshihide Kishimoto, who sought to blend elements of the Imperial Court music with those of more popular genres to create a new form of music which would be appropriate for a modernized Japan. Inherent in his thinking was the idea that while Gagaku was the only music having the power to fully evoke and express the Japanese spirit, it was too austere …

One of the social phenomena of our time (1960s) has been the popularization of a kind of music among the youth known as rock 'n' roll. It was the intent of this study to determine if the medium of rock did, in fact, maintain a posture of promulgating unchastity, the use of drugs and departure from traditional concepts of family and religion.
Supported by statements from leading rock musicians it was found that the big beat had a cultural root in the Negroid race. Coupling the big beat gospel rhythms of the south with the white country and western music, …

ART IS ALL ENDURING and limitless, and defies positive, unvariable classification. No attempt is being made in this book to compare artistic, subjective or emotional factors. Only the objective elements, techniques and procedures of music that are tangible and definite are being compared and classified. Western music, having reached a plateau under the present harmonic system, is projecting into new channels for textural inspiration.
