Recollections From A Life In Music, Louis Krasner

The Courier

On October 28, 1984, Louis Krasner came to Syracuse University in order to speak to the Library Associates at their annual meeting. After a warm introduction by Professor Frank Macomber of the Department of Fine Arts, Mr. Krasner gave his address on the subject of American composers whom he had known and worked with. The following is an abstract of his talk, in which particular emphasis has been given to Roger Sessions.

The Courier

This article details the musical scores donated as gifts to the Syracuse University Libraries on behalf of violinist and Syracuse Professor Louis Krasner. Some of the scores include first editions of Beethoven scores, but the main collection includes rare chamber music and string adaptations of music popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Beethoven himself often protested about these works, claiming pianos are too far away from stringed instruments to be directly adapted.

Schoenberg's Moses and Aron has been called the most important product of his musical maturity, implying that many of his theoretical, musical, philosophical, and spiritual ideas, both public and personal, can be found in this unique work. The work does not fit neatly into any prescribed category that has come before it or after it. It is possible, however, to trace the development of the work from Schoenberg's own preceding compositions, which in many cases provide the roots of ideas more fully developed in Moses and Aron. The recent fascination for the flutist-composers of the 19th century has brought to life much music by flute virtuosos such as Tulou, Demersseman, Boehm, Genin, and others. To this time, however, the colorful artistry of Charles Nicholson has been overlooked. His brief career, spanning but two decades, brought the flute to the forefront as a solo instrument in England and propagated numerous fantasies, variation, methods, and other works for flute. In most cultures of the world, the creative act of composition may be defined simply as the transformation of pre-existing material into new, individualized structures. The precompositional resource may be a system such as the hierarchical arrangement of triads that forms the basis of Western tonality, a set of formulas that generates such genres as Gregorian chant and West African storytelling, or even a rigidly defined set of relationships such as those inherent in a twelve-tone row. In each case, the precompositional elements provide a framework for the analysis and interpretation of the composition.

Three times during his compositional career, Mahler turned to the medium of the orchestral song cycle either to experiment with or to refine certain technical procedures. This resulted in a variety of methods for establishing large-scale tonal coherence, using song as a resource for later symphonic composition, and stylizing folk material, melodically and rhythmically. These compositional techniques are clearly exemplified in Mahler's three cycles, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (1883-85), Kindertotenlieder (1901-04), and Das Lied von der Erde (1907-08).

Fiddle Songs And Banjo Songs: A Description Index, Gilbert Wayne Howard

English-language texts associated with fiddle and banjo in the southern United States are described and then indexed for comparative reference. The fiddle songs are typically humorous, very brief, highly variable and disunified. The same is true of many banjo songs associated with the banjo. Ballads in the fiddle and the banjo repertory are not indexed if previously catalogued by Child or Laws.

Fiddle and banjo songs are defined as texts associated with fiddle or banjo playing, either through instrumental accompaniment or because informants mentally associate them with the fiddle or banjo. Various ways of performing the songs are enumerated, with …

Formation, expression, and function of world view were examined in the life and compositions of folk musician, Katherine O'Neill Peters Sturgill. It was seen that the institutions of home, loved ones, and heaven were dominant themes in the formation of her world view. When twenty-two of Kate's gospel and sentimental song compositions were examined for thematic content, they were found to reflect the predominant formative influences in Kate's life. An interpretive model was developed showing home, loved ones, and heaven to be unified themes in a concept of sacred order--a concept which stood to oppose and defend against the banal …
