The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate briefly the evolution of musical styles and characteristics found in sacred soli from oratorios over the course of the Baroque Period to the Twentieth Century. The author chose eight representative arias for examination in this project, with two arias being chosen for each of four periods, the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Twentieth Century, selected because of the prominence of both the composer and the aria in the context of choral history. The thesis is divided into four basic sections, the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Twentieth Century. The author will discuss historical influences …

The motets of Guillaume de Machaut (1300-1377), though described by one scholar as "conservative and backward-looking" because of their heavy use of French texts, nonetheless provide a rich melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic palette for the extraordinary voices of the Hilliard Ensemble. The ensemble's recording of eighteen of the twenty-three known works in this genre (a twenty-fourth exists, but its attribution is spurious), is exemplary and should delight both the medieval scholar and the casual listener.

This pair of discs by Trio Mediaeval offers an imaginative soundscape of music both ancient and new. Trio Mediaeval's approach to the ancient is laudable and lovely, but the contemporary compositions written specifically for this all female group seem to give them their truest voice. The older recording, Words of the Angel (2001), intersperses movements of the Tournai mass--one of the earliest manuscript compilations of polyphonic settings of the texts of the Ordinary—among monophonic laudae and English Marian motets and sequences. The various styles provide textural and harmonic relief, a real concern in a completely unaccompanied recording. The recording takes …

Carus-Verkag, Frieder Bernius, and the Stuttgarter Kammerchor have produced a number of impressive recordings to serve as companions to their impeccable printed editions of valuable, but seldom performed, choral works. Mendelssohn's music has been championed in at least six of these recordings, and showcases an undeniably rich output that until now has received scant attention. The present disc aims to reverse that fortune. Christus features three early works from 1822 to 1825, when the composer was just thirteen to sixteen years old, along with late works from 1843 and 1847. Making the Scene: An Investigation of the Rock and Roll Scenes of Nashville, Tennessee, and Athens, Georgia, takes a look at the ways in which both the identities of a music scene and the individuals taking part in that scene are created and maintained. Issues of identity are addressed by examining the roles performed by various members of the scene (musicians, soundmen, club owners, etc . . .), by focusing on the influence of landscape, and looking at the ways a scene’s members identify with the cultural region that surrounds their particular scene (in this case both scenes are located …

Any recording that focuses solely upon the music of Andrea Gabrieli, the other Gabrieli, risks languishing in store bins, forgotten by all but the most musicological of listeners. This recording, fortunately, should not suffer that fate.

Director Timothy Roberts, His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts and the newly formed His Majestys Consort of Voices have put together a celebration of Andrea Gabrieli that is as well performed as it is researched. Though some of the scoring choices are unusual, the performances are nearly impeccable with but a few exceptions.

The choral works of English composer Benjamin Britten (1913-76), like his efforts in other forms, have been overshadowed by his operas. War Requiem, essentially operatic in character, along with Rejoice in the Lamb, and A Ceremony of Carols, have risen to the top of the choral repertoire and receive the majority of the attention paid today as concert and recording fare. These, however, obscure a number of other excellent works in Britten's choral output. Olivier Messiaen is one of the major musical figures of the twentieth century. His music draws on a diverse set of influences, yet always remains unique and entirely his own. His unwavering religious beliefs constitute the source of inspiration behind most of his music. Vingt Regards sur ['Enfant-Jesus for solo piano was composed in 1944. It forms a powerful and personal musical statement concerning one of the central mysteries of the Catholic faith, the Incarnation. As such, it is an important work within Messiaen's output. Its musical language and spiritual message are typical ofMessiaen's style.

It has been almost fifty years since Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings of 1925-1928 were first recognized in print as a watershed of jazz history and the means by which the trumpeter emerged as the style's first transcendent figure. Since then these views have only intensified. The Hot Fives and Hot Sevens have come to be regarded as harbingers of all jazz since, with Armstrong's status as the “single most creative and innovative force in jazz history” and an “American genius” now well beyond dispute. Evangelical Protestantism prevailed in the rural Appalachian area at the beginning of the 201 h century and therefore influenced the development of the country music tradition. In this study, the influence of evangelical Protestantism is analyzed in terms of country music's lyrical content, performance settings, vocalization styles, artist's lifestyles and image, career selections and business decisions. Reading arithmetic proportion in the bible via musical hermeneutics, this essay emphasizes the important role of music in predominantly aural cultures. Applying Patrick Heelan's non-distributive lattice logic to examples extracted from the bible, McClain applies the notion of regulative aesthetic activity to the Davidic musicology embedded in Bible mathology.  Includes several illustrative diagrams.
