An Evaluation Of High School Chorus Materials, Albert Wilson Canine

One of the most important problems of a chorus director is how to select suitable materials which will be effectively used with a particular group. This problem is worthy of careful consideration. It is the purpose of this thesis to determine the factors necessary in choosing good material for the high school chorus and to offer a list of the best available selections as an aid to the director in choosing the most appropriate music.

It was the purpose of this study to (1) investigate the use and value of the simple instrument program in the elementary school and (2) provide or suggest musical experiences through the medium of this program that will help children to get at the inner essence of music through a process of musical growth. These experiences should be in agreement with the modern philosophy of music education. An attempt was made to present these experiences in such a manner that they can be readily utilized by any teacher in the primary grades.

It is hoped that the facts revealed in this survey will aid in the passage of a law in Indiana concerning Music Education, similar to the law in effect in Indiana dealing with Vocational Education. It is further hoped that these facts will show a need for better programs of music education. 1. To present the outstanding problems and difficulties which are likely to arise in the process of organizing a mixed chorus in the average small four-year high school, and in directing the chorus during its first year.
2. To analyze these difficulties and to suggest techniques of treating them, based on the experience and recommendations of authorities in the field of choral conducting, and also based on the writer's personal contacts with the field of choral music as a student and as a director.

During my brief career as an instructor in the Quartermaster School, Camp Lee, Va., in 1945-46, I became interested in the use of audio-visual aids by the Army in teaching soldiers various Army procedures. I was subjected to an Army course in the use of Audio-visual aids, and later I designed visual aids for use in the Quartermaster School. At that time I compared the use of these aids by the Army with the possible use of the aids in music education. Comparatively little literature has been written about the wind-band as a musical institution.1 still less has been recorded regarding the integrative social potenti- alities of the wind-band in American musical life--especi- ally for the horden of "Mr. and Mrs. Average Citizen" who constitute the back-bone of our Nation's communities. Specialized and localized efforts are being made throughout the country toward making musical life a definite part of community life. General observation tends to leave us believing that strides in this direction are just beginning and that the impetus will increase.

The music teacher of today has only to look back as far as his own experiences as a music student to become aware that rapid and significant changes in the underlying philosophy of music teaching have occurred at all school levels. In general the emphasis has shifted from the development of mechanical skills through repetitive drill on formalized exercises, to the development of the whole child through participation in a broad field of pleasurable musical experiences. The Basic Instrumental Method is an attempt to provide music materials suitable for the teaching of instrumental music to children in the grade schools using the class method. Four approaches have been used in developing this method. They are the following: (1) The selection of six basic instruments suitable for small children, (2) arrangement of the material in such a manner as to allow for individual advancement, (3) a well graded presentation of rhythmic problems, and (4) a recognition of the psychological value of motivation.
