"The Varied Carols I Hear": The Music Of The New Deal In The West, Peter L. Gough

The Federal Music Project and subsequent WPA Music Programs served as components of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's "New Deal" efforts to combat the economic devastation precipitated by the Great Depression. Operating during the years 1936 to 1943, these programs that engaged unemployed musicians mirrored similar efforts of the Federal Theatre, Art and Writers' Projects. Though the Federal Music Project proved to be the largest of the cultural programs in terms of both employment and attendance, to date it has received the least attention from scholars. Riley and copperplate printer Thomas Adams formed the firm Riley & Adams in 1812. It is said that all his three sons became music publishers, music instrument manufacturers and retailers.

Four years ago, the Mass. Studies Project at UMass Boston launched a cultural heritage project that we dubbed the “Mass. Memories Road Show,” a real-world mashup of PBS’s Antiques Road Show (people bring their personal stuff to a local event for professional perusal) and the Library of Congress’ American Memory Project (digitize historic stuff and share it with the world). The contents of the project are a reflection paper titled “A Musician's Evolution”, an album titled The N.O.C. Project” and two dvds. One is a documentary titled When Papa Lost the Pimps” and a music video titled Rancid Reality”. In the paper the author writes out the lyrics of eight songs, out of the sixteen songs in the album, in order for the reader to analyze them.
