Words And Music: The Assembling Of Traveling West, Randall Snyder Jan 1991

Words And Music: The Assembling Of Traveling West, Randall Snyder

Randall Snyder Compositions

This paper is a consideration of the art song as a unique collaboration of poet and composer, the result of which, rarely achieving a balance between the two, often resulting in a creation that comprises the predominant artistic vision of one or the other, with poetry usually getting short shrift. This discussion will examine how dfferent methods of text setting can affect the intended meaning of the poem, citing examples of poet-composer relationships. Then I will discuss how these concepts are utilized in my song cycle, Traveling West, settings of poems by Susan Strayer Deal, Marjorie Saiser, Hilda Raz, …

Two "Mistakes" In Stravinsky's Lntroitus, Joseph N. Straus Jan 1991

Two "Mistakes" In Stravinsky's Lntroitus, Joseph N. Straus

Publications and Research

During the 1950s and 60s, Stravinsky learned, mastered, and significantly transformed a musical language that was, for him, entirely new—the language of twelve-tone serialism. As the abundant compositional sketches from this period in the Paul Sacher Foundation make clear, this process was not always an easy one for Stravinsky. Indeed, the sketches show him groping for solutions to basic compositional problems, including particularly the problem of creating meaningful vertical harmonies from the essentially linear nature of the twelve-tone system.

Concerto For Oboe And Orchestra, Roseane Yampolschi Jan 1991

Concerto For Oboe And Orchestra, Roseane Yampolschi

Masters Theses

In one movement, the "Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra" is divided into five sections and a cadenza. It proposes to question the classical predominance of the solo instrument over the orchestra. A thoughtful distribution and diversification of roles performed by the soloist and the orchestra offers, as an alternative, a balanced interplay between these two protagonists.

Sections A and B supply material used in the other sections. Their main parameters are the predominance of some pitch intervals and the simultaneous use of different rhythmic organizations forming distinct textures. Section C stands quite freely from sections A and B for its …

Trumpeter Swan (Score), Gary Smart Jan 1990

Trumpeter Swan (Score), Gary Smart

Music Faculty Research and Scholarship

This piece was originally recorded for Capstone Records in 1990. At the time, this beautiful bird was disappearing from the American West and was on the endangered species list.

The piece is in two movements. The first is “nesting music”, the second takes flight, and moves through several adventurous episodes, but finally settles back into the opening serenity. The work ends with echoing calls fading into silence.

Variation Procedures In Northern Ewe Song, V. Kofi Agawu Jan 1990

Variation Procedures In Northern Ewe Song, V. Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

The major organizational principle of Northern Ewe song is one shared by numerous African, Oriental, and European musical traditions: a small number of models (variously described as "basic shapes," "archetypes," "background structures," "basic designs," "core patterns," "deep structures") is transformed in a wide variety of ways during performance. Variation takes place on different hierarchic levels both within and between songs and includes practically all of a song's dimensions (rhythm, interval, register, contour, harmony, and so on). This principle, although widely demonstrated in the literature on African song (see, among others, Jones 1976; Kauffman 1984; Schmidt 1984; and Erlmann 1985), is …

Variants On The Holiday Season, Gary Powell Nash Aug 1989

Variants On The Holiday Season, Gary Powell Nash

Masters Theses

Variants on the Holiday Season is a symphonic poem for full orchestra. This composition is based on five Christmas songs including three Medieval tunes, "Nowel Syng We Bothe Al and Son," "Riu Riu," and "Two French Dances," along with "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "Deck the Halls." Most of the music is derived from motives, rhythms, harmonies, and interval patterns of the original songs. The harmonies employed are created from the modes of the original tunes. Although there is no program supporting this work, it is considered a symphonic poem because it incorporates chimes, glockenspiel and sleigh bells which …

Concerto For Euphonium And String Orchestra, Steven Dale Sudduth Jun 1989

Concerto For Euphonium And String Orchestra, Steven Dale Sudduth

Masters Theses

The purpose of this concerto is to add substantial literature to the limited repertoire written for euphonium. Each of the three movements explores a different medium of music. The first movement is strictly developmental material based on a five-note motive taken from the end of an ascending melodic minor scale. The second movement uses an unusual five-voice passacaglia. The last movement is a cadenza shared by both the solo euphonium and the string orchestra with both parts having equal importance. Characteristic of all three movements is the blending of the voice ranges and the use of complex rhythms.

Transcendent Journeys, Spiritual Frontiers And Analysis, Peter H. Fischer

Masters Theses

Transcendent Journeys, Spiritual Frontiers is a musical composition for mezzo-soprano, flute, clarinet, piano, percussion, violin, violoncello, and conductor. The thesis consists of a reduced conductor's score and a written analysis. The composition consists of an instrumental prelude, followed by the three poems set as a song cycle.

The music features a different compositional technique for each song: the first song, "The Moon and the Yew Tree," uses mixed mode tertian sonorities; the third song, "Byzantium," …

Poetry: Toward Speaking For, Charles Hartman Apr 1988

Poetry: Toward Speaking For, Charles Hartman

English Faculty Publications

The article presents an essay that finds the relation among jazz, song and poetry. In 1985 Larry Coryell and Emily Remler released an album of guitar duets. Coryell pioneered the "fusion" of jazz and rock styles in the mid-sixties, and has developed that border area ever since. Remler, a more recently risen star, has more closely followed a jazz line of development. The differentiation of the voice of the poem, its discovery of its own potential multiplicity, is a point arrived at, not begun from.

Tone And Tune: The Evidence For Northern Ewe Music, V. Kofi Agawu Apr 1988

Tone And Tune: The Evidence For Northern Ewe Music, V. Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

Abstract:

One of the most intriguing features of most African languages is that of tone, by which variations in speech tone generate different meanings (Pike, 1948, offers a valuable introduction to this subject and includes an extensive bibliography; Fromkin, 1972, is a comprehensive evaluation of specialised studies). In the Ewe language, for example, the word to [H] pronounced with a high tone means ‘ear’, as in To le venye (HLMM), ‘I have an earache.’ To can also mean ‘through’, Meto akɔnta me [MHLHML], ‘I have gone through the accounts.’ But as soon as the high tone is replaced by a …

Tonal Strategy In The First Movement Of Mahler's Tenth Symphony, V. Kofi Agawu Apr 1986

Tonal Strategy In The First Movement Of Mahler's Tenth Symphony, V. Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

During his summer retreat of 1910, Mahler sketched a five-movement symphony in F# major that was to be his tenth. He did not live to see the work completed. In spite of this, or rather because of it, the Tenth has accumulated a fascinating history, evident in the series of attempts to "realize" Mahler sketches, the best known of which is Deryck Cooke's "performing version."

A Profile Of Anna Bon, 18th Century Venetian Composer, Kathleen Abromeit Jan 1985

A Profile Of Anna Bon, 18th Century Venetian Composer, Kathleen Abromeit

Lawrence University Honors Projects

During the 1700's, music was flourishing in Italy, and Italy was regarded as the country of true musicians. Italian musicians and composers were frequently imported by courts in other countries. One Venetian composer of the time, who was composing for royalty, was Anna Bon. There is very little known about her life beyond that which appears on the title pages of her published works. A modest amount of information on Bon appears in Eitner's Quellenlexikon (1898). Abromeit examines this scarce amount of information and prepares an analysis and realization of two of Bon's sonatas for flute and continuo, Opus 1, …

The Impact Of Language On Musical Composition In Ghana: An Introduction To The Musical Style Of Ephraim Amu, V. Kofi Agawu Jan 1984

The Impact Of Language On Musical Composition In Ghana: An Introduction To The Musical Style Of Ephraim Amu, V. Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

In most cultures of the world, the creative act of composition may be defined simply as the transformation of pre-existing material into new, individualized structures. The precompositional resource may be a system such as the hierarchical arrangement of triads that forms the basis of Western tonality, a set of formulas that generates such genres as Gregorian chant and West African storytelling, or even a rigidly defined set of relationships such as those inherent in a twelve-tone row. In each case, the precompositional elements provide a framework for the analysis and interpretation of the composition.
