An Understanding Of Deep Rivers Through An Analysis Of Three Of Its Main Symbols, Vincent Spina
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
The aim of"An Understanding of Deep Rivers" is to analyze some of the iconographic uses in the novel from the point of view of the Andean Cosmovision. Though many inroads have already been made in this direction, when the novel first appeared much of this cosmovision was not understood at all or considered part of Andean " folklore". In the present work, the use of the Quechua term " ilia" and and that of the Southern Cross (the Chakana in Quechua) are analyzed with respect to the symbolic role they play in the novel.

En su novela Orescu (1999-2001), el autor mexicano Gabriel Trujillo Muñoz establece una hibridación genérica entre dos estilos modernos, la ciencia-ficción de tipo space opera, y sobre todo, la fantasía heroica.
Esta mezcla, nada inocente, de géneros harto similares en cuanto a sus implicaciones en materia de construcción novelística, es significativa en cuanto a las implicaciones diegéticas. Ahora bien, ¿de qué manera se ilustra esto en Orescu? Cabe preguntarse de qué manera el autor utiliza a estos géneros para reflexionar sobre aspectos más vinculados con las problemáticas fronterizas y las cuestiones identitarias del México posmoderno.

Se ha dicho que los textos de ciencia-ficción abarcan todas las posibles formas de lo Otro al proveerle una identidad que subraya la diferencia como punto de partida para el diálogo. La ciencia-ficción argentina es tanto una excepción como una prueba de tal afirmación puesto que, aunque aparecen raras veces, los monstruos, los extraterrestres y las razas extrañas que la habitan ponen en evidencia en qué medida esa diversidad constituye una amenaza para discursos políticos que se organizan en torno a una deseada homogeneidad nacional. My dissertation explores the narrative of Aurora Bertrana (1892-1974), an unknown writer today, but a successful and recognized female author in Catalonia and Spain during the mid 20th century. The written work of Aurora Bertrana is almost never mentioned in manuals of literature. Relegated almost to absolute oblivion, her rich, intellectual writting has not received the attention it deserves. I have studied seventeen of Bertrana’s novels –practically her entire oeuvre– written in Catalan and Spanish, including the following excellent books that have escaped critical attention: Ariatea (1960), “El pomell de les violes” (mn.), L’inefable Philip (mn.), La aldea sin …

En dos de los cuadernos de trabajo de Jose Donoso contenidos en el archivo de la Universidad de Iowa se encuentra un conjunto de anotaciones autografas en las que se hace evidente que el escritor no se encontraba trabajando en uno de sus proyectos literarios, sino en una entrevista a Jorge Luis Borges. This paper is part of the academic effort to recover historical memory in post-Civil War Spain and metaphorically applies the so-called Giobert Tincture to Carmen Martín Gaite’s El cuarto de atrás (1978), Dulce Chacón’s La voz dormida (2002) and Pedro Almodóvar’s La mala educación (2004) in order show how these works reveal the ghosts of the repression exerted against the epitome of the abject/obscene by Franco’s dictatorship: the queer collective. This collective continues to suffer from marginalization as well as from the effects of repression. Faustian Figures: Modernity And Male (Homo)Sexualities In Spanish Commercial Literature, 1900-1936, Jeffrey Zamostny

I contend in this study that commercial novels and theater from early twentiethcentury Spain often present male (homo)sexual characters as a point of constellation for anxieties regarding modernization in Madrid and Barcelona. In works by Jacinto Benavente, Josep Maria de Sagarra, El Caballero Audaz (José María Carretero), Antonio de Hoyos y Vinent, Carmen de Burgos, Álvaro Retana, Eduardo Zamacois, and Alfonso Hernández-Catá, concerns about technological and socioeconomic change converge upon hustlers and blackmailers, queer seducers, and chaste inverts. Literary Africa: Spanish Reflections Of Morocco, Western Sahara, And Equatorial Guinea In The Contemporary Novel, 1990-2010, Mahan L. Ellison

This dissertation analyzes the strategies that Spanish and Hispano-African authors employ when writing about Africa in the contemporary novel (1990-2010). Focusing on the former Spanish colonial territories of Morocco, Western Sahara, and Equatorial Guinea, I analyze the post-colonial literary discourse about these regions. This study examines the new ways of conceptualizing Africa that depart from an Orientalist framework as advanced by the novelists Lorenzo Silva, Concha López Sarasúa, Ramón Mayrata, María Dueñas, Fernando Gamboa, Montserrat Abumalham, Javier Reverte, Alberto Vázquez-Figueroa, and Donato Ndongo. Rhetorics Of Empire: The Falangist Discourse Of War (1939-1943), M. Elena Aldea Agudo

During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) a mix of right-wing ideologies existed among the Francoist forces. In sharp contrast with the Republican forces, the Francoist insurgents were successful in banding together despite their ideological differences. However, in the postwar era, this relative unity gave way to a struggle among the different ideological positions, each striving to impose its agenda for the new State. The party Falange Española Tradicionalista y de las Juntas de Ofensiva Nacional Sindicalista (FET y de las JONS) assumed power, but was not entirely successful in advancing its totalitarian project, which it had inherited from the prewar …

Transatlantic Fuentes: Between ‘The Two Shores’ Of Pluriculturality And Glossocentrism, Alberto Ribas-Casasayas

The cultural program that Jerónimo de Aguilar pronounces at the end of Carlos Fuentes's short story “The Two Shores” appears to be inconsistent with the fundamentals of democratic liberalism and multiculturalism upon which they are ostensibly based. Furthermore, cultural visions like those in “The Two Shores” lend signifying imagery and empower cultural institutions, the media, and political authorities to exert symbolic violence upon minorities, thereby negating the multiculturalism that such visions claim to be promoting. El siguiente artículo resume la actividad poética de Venezuela en la década de los años 60. Traza la evolución de códigos poéticos a través de dos grupos Sardio y El Techo de la Ballena y analiza a dos poetas de este último grupo, Juan Calzadilla y Caupolicán Ovallles. Se examina en el artículo la importancia de la ciudad como plano poético de los grupos y los poetas.
