The twentieth-century Cuban poet Virgilio Piñera was both a radical and rebellious writer who wrote against the national discourses of his time. In his acclaimed poem La isla en peso Piñera challenges the Neobaroque discourse of Cuban identity by describing Cuba as 'insular' rather than innovative. The following article argues that La isla en peso, like a prophetic letter, seems to have foreseen seventy years earlier what the modern literary critic Abraham Acosta has recently described as a "threshold of illiteracy," that is, a disruption or illiterate interference of one's critical reading by exposing the contradictions of cultural nationalism. …

This essay explores Junot Díaz's only full-length novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, through the theoretical lens of sociolinguistics and examines the ways in which Díaz has attempted to overcome the publishing industry's complicity in maintaining the nation's ethnocentric expectations in regards to English as the only acceptable language of publication. By introducing the work of several sociolinguists into the discussion, examining the use of African American Vernacular and “nerdish” alongside the Spanish, and reviewing Díaz’s relationship with his editors, I provide a more nuanced reading of the ubiquitous code-switching throughout Oscar Wao and suggest that beyond …

Manuel Altolaguirre: Between Exile And Spain, Will Derusha

The Coastal Review

The exile of Manuel Altolaguirre, poet of the Generation of ‘27, touches on Spanish and Latin American literature and culture. The article examines the attitudes and beliefs of the avant-garde from the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera and the Second Republic through the Spanish Civil War and into exile. Using Altolaguirre’s experiences in Cuba and Mexico, the article discusses exile literature and the dislocations of Spanish refugees struggling to make a living on the fly and feeling further isolated and forgotten in the upheavals of the Second World War.

A través del análisis de la novela Synco de Jorge Baradit y el cuento "Exerion" de Pablo Castro, se propone el uso de la literatura de ciencia ficción como vehículo para la curación de traumas producidos por la dictadura chilena de Augusto Pinochet. Los autores creen que a través del extrañamiento y la heterotopía, la ciencia ficción puede ser útil y pertinente a lo que se ha venido a llamar como literatura del trauma.

This paper looks to María Izquierdo’s paintings, Prisioneras (Prisoners) of 1936 and Sueño y presentimiento (Dream and Premonition) of 1947, as case studies for activating a theory of triple self-portraiture. The theory reflects how plurality arises in the singular or in single significations of the self and disrupts homogeneity in thinking about identities for the self and others within the genre of self-portraiture. In activating a theory of triple self-portraiture, I found three forms of the self in Izquierdo's works: the self as oppressed (the past); the self as oppressing (the current); and the self as an emancipator (future). This dissertation analyzes the prose works of the “Nova Novorum,” a fiction series created and published by José Ortega y Gasset between 1926 and 1929. This collection included six works by four authors, five of which will be discussed in this dissertation. Pedro Salinas’ Víspera del gozo (1926) inaugurated the series. Benjamín Jarnés published two works: El profesor inútil (1926) and Paula y Paulita (1929). Antonio Espina is also responsible for two works: Pájaro pinto (1927) and Luna de copas (1929).

Using perspectives typical of English and theatrical fields of study, this capstone project interprets Molina from Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel Kiss of the Spider Woman as a heterosexual transgender woman and then investigates why such an interpretation does not exist in performance adaptations. Although Molina has been called a transgender woman in recent criticism, there is a conflation of gender and sexuality that has been uninvestigated in this text. It has not been addressed how Molina constructs her identity or how this interpretation might be employed in performance, which this essay seeks to confront. The first half of the project …

During Spring 2015 I undertook a curricular revision of UNL's fourth-semester Spanish course (SPAN202) with the objective of improving the materials to help the course better achieve its stated goal of moving students "away from knowledge about the language and expertise in using isolated skills into a practical and fluid use of the language in which [they] synthesize [their] isolated skills." As it existed at the time, in theory SPAN202 focuses on synthesis and helping students negotiate higher levels of discourse, but in practice it tended to get bogged down in a comprehensive grammar review. Partiendo de la propuesta del propio Cote, quien pide en la “Entrada” de su libro que se lo acepte como una sala de exhibición donde los poemas son equivalentes a las obras de arte, propongo una aproximación desde dos perspectivas dialógicas: una interna y otra externa. Rafael Leonidas Trujillo (1891-1961), the ruthless Dominican Republic ruler dominated his island’s politics for over thirty years. In his acclaimed 2000 novel, The Feast of the Goat, Peruvian Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa creates Urania Cabral, a 49-year-old émigrée who at 14 left her nation after becoming Trujillo’s sexual victim. The novel, told from many perspectives, focuses on her return, the dictator’s last day, and the story of the four conspirators waiting to ambush him the night of May 30th 1961. This article analyzes the representation of masculinity in Juan José Domenchina’s poetry of exile. The article argues that, during his last 20 years of life in exile (1939–1959), Domenchina shows in his poetry a contradictory masculinity. On the one hand, he reaffirms normative masculinity by rejecting pompous demonstrations of suffering, describing himself as stoic, tough, strong-willed and independent, and praising nostalgically Castilian men’s hypermasculine behavior. On the other hand, Domenchina’s poetry also testifies to his feelings of emasculation, since he calls himself an “ex-man”, shows his masculine fragmentation with the figures of the doppelganger or shadow, identifies himself with a …

American novelist Cormac McCarthy published the first installment of his Border Trilogy, a novel entitled All The Pretty Horses, only a decade before the turn of the 21st century. Within a few months, essays by Alan Cheuse and Vereen M. Bell would set the tone for scholarship on McCarthy's work for the decade to follow. However, in 2012 Jordan Savage revolutionized the conversation on the concept of "border" within the Border Trilogy, identifying it as an ideological myth.
