Carlos Fuente's "The Two Shores": Between Counterfactualism And Cultural Allegory, Alberto Ribas-Casasayas
Modern Languages & Literature
A literary criticism of the short story "The Two Shores," which appeared in the 1992 book "The Orange Tree," by Carlos Fuentes. The plot and characters of the story are described, particularly the narrator, Jerónimo de Aguilar, a dead man who was held captive by the Mayans. The story is a contribution to the reconsideration of the Spanish conquest of the Americas, particularly Mexico. The idea that the story may present a counterfactual historiography, an idea created by critic Niall Ferguson, is considered.

Cometas en el cielo es la primera novela del Dr. Khaled Hosseini. La narración cruza épocas y fronteras, teniendo como trasfondo la historia moderna de Afganistán, desde el período anterior a la invasión rusa de 1980 hasta la actualidad: justo en el momento después a la invasión de los Talibanes.

El Impacto De "Viernes" En La Poesía Venezolana, William Martínez

This essay presents a historical review of the poetic production in Venezuela in the 30's and 40's. It reviews the role that "Viernes," a poetic group, had in developing the modern literary movements in Venezuelan literature. The impact that several members of the group had while in and then later after their departure from the group is examined. Equally, the poetic influences inherited by the group, both national and international, are discussed. Finally, the essay deals with the dissolution of the group and its impact in the literature of Venezuela and Latin America after World War II.

Sarmiento (1811-88) en la Argentina y Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo (1864-1936) en España. La personalidad compleja de Sarmiento como ensayista político, literato y promotor de la educación dentro de la Argentina, su análisis de la realidad latinoamericana poscolonial y su visión crítica de España, le proporcionan una visión interesante a Unamuno, cincuenta años después. Paraíso Perdido, Paraíso Inventado. La Idealización Del Paraíso En La Literatura Latinoamericana: Un Comentario A Manera De Observaciones, William Martínez

This essay attempts to present a commentary about the notion of paradise in Latin America, as a whole, with a quick review of literature produced in the last 500 years. The image of paradise arises with Columbus' arrival in the Caribbean. In his letters to the Spanish Crown, Columbus creates the myth of paradise in the Caribbean, an image that never existed and, yet, still appears today within Latin American Literature. In several literary periods the image is re-invented and transformed. The essay deals with the evolution of the notions of paradise, questioning, at the end, a possible future regarding …

Returning To The Originary Enmity Of Philosophy And Literature: Juan Benet's Del Pozo Y Del Numa (Un Ensayo Y Una Leyenda), Stephen D. Gingerich

The article discusses the book "Del pozo y del numa (un ensayo y una leyenda)," by Spanish author Juan Benet. The book is a critical analysis of the work of German novelist Thomas Mann. The article explores the similarities between the two writers, and while Benet was disappointed in Mann's opus "Joseph and His Brothers," both writers were accustomed to include philosophical digressions in their works. The article also mentions Benet's love-hate relationship with literary criticism.

The Teenage Dissent Of Newman And Unamuno: Conscience As A Safeguard Against Coercive Manipulation, Kevin T. Fagan

Teenagers seem easy targets for despotic groups, such as cults. Moral conscience, however, may be a dike against a sea of despotism. John Henry Newman and Miguel de Unamuno were giant defenders of conscience in their respective cultures. Their philosophies and phenomenologies of conscience depict conscience as supreme in the mind of the ordinary person, though subject to pressures, even death. This notion becomes alive in the deep religious crisis and conversion of their adolescence, marked by a sense of personal divine experience, confidence in final predestination or holy trust, and an ethical commitment. Freedom Of Conscience In John H. Newman And Miguel De Unamuno, Kevin T. Fagan

Deals with the issue of freedom of conscience in two of its principal advocates in the modem English and Spanish-speaking worlds, John Henry Newman and Miguel de Unamuno. Seemingly strange bedfellows, in their respective linguistic communities Newman is considered an intellectual defender of institutional Christianity, while Unamuno is oft characterized as its greatest heretic. This dissertation is a comparative study of both writers from a historical-critical perspective. Our aim is to suggest that the heroic defenses of conscience by both Newman and Unamuno towards the end of their lives are a logical corollary to a succession of actions and writings …

Good Intentions Aren't Enough: Intellectuals And Violence In Luis Goytisolo's Mzungo, Terri Carney

In the 1990s Luis Goytisolo explores the possibilities of popular fiction, adapting various genres (travel, mystery, erotic, historical) to accomodate his long-term project of unpacking Western Values. Indeed, Goytisolo’s flirtation with the best-selling genre fiction constitutes a postmodern gesture of “complicitous critique.”For example, in Escalera hacia el cielo (1999) Goytisolo exploits the erotic genre to challenge the traditional paradigm of the dominant male gaze and the objectified female body and to offer instead expressions of mutuality. In Mzungo (1996), Goytisolo engages the travel novel to undermine the culturally dominant position of the white European male who “discovers” an unknown culture/geography …

Agustín Gómez-Arcos, a bilingual dramatist and novelist, was born in 1933 in the village of Enix (Almeria). The origins of his theater can be traced to his childhood experiences, in which he witnessed firsthand the horrors of the Spanish Civil War and the dark clouds of oppression of the Francoist regime, images that left indelible imprints on his literature and his life. Although in the future he would leave behind both native country and language, his memories of the Civil War and postwar period would continue to surface in his plays.

Para explicar el razonamiento que trasfonda el análisis poético, propongo establecer un punto integrativo entre lo teórico y lo práctico. El problema de la relación del lenguaje poético al lenguaje no-poético ha venido a crear dos escuelas opuestas en pensamiento sobre lo que cada una considera como "lenguaje poético." En una, se denota la emotividad del acto poético. El poema difiere de otro tipo de texto en base a la capacidad de extraer emociones de los receptores.
