En la primera ocasión observamos atónitos un imposible Madrid vacío. El primer sorprendido es César, quien detiene el coche cuando se da cuenta de que no hay un alma por las calles y sale corriendo Gran Vía abajo hacia la Plaza de España. El segundo despertar es una repetición del primero, con algunas importantes diferencias.

There is no doubt that the publication of Teaching Representations of the Spanish Civil War is clearly justified by the increasing number of university courses--both in English and in Spanish-dedicated to the study of the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). As the editor, Noël Valis, points out, the intention of the book is to guide instructors in the diverse ways in which the wide variety of materials pertaining to the Spanish Civil War may be presented in the classroom. Im Vorwort zu Wolfram Mausers und Günter Saßes Aufsatzsammelband über Streitkultur im Werk Lessings heißt es, der Streit im Lessingschen Sinne sei mit einer bestimmten Auffassung des Aufklärens verbunden, der ,,Öffnung eines kommunikativen Raumes, der sich als Offerte zur Teilnahme am gemeinsamen Räsonnement versteht". Wir schließen also, daß die These, Hölderlin habe chiliastisches Denken von frühauf von seiner pietistischen Umgebung aufgenommen, wohl revisionsbedürftig ist. Obwohl sich die Möglichkeit einer solchen Vermittlung anhand der Köstlin'schen Predigten feststellen läßt, scheint das dualistische Zeitmodell viel tiefere Wurzeln ins Bewußtsein des jungen Dichters geschlagen zu haben als chiliastische Vorstellungen. The problematic reaction that pornography evokes as both a literary and cultural construct stems partially from the fact that it is as antimodern as it is modern. This paradox is implicitly outlined in Lynn Hunt's definition of pornography. The ironically traditional, if not presumably timeless, quality of pornography she describes as "the explicit depiction of sexual organs and sexual practices with the aim of arousing sexual feelings"; at the same time, however, the "modernity" of pornography, especially in the early modern period, stems from the fact that such works, "us[ed] the shock of sex to criticize religious and political authorities' …

Many contemporary Latin American authors explore identity and re-write the past through narrative fiction, often looking to the violent beginnings of the Conquest and Colonization as a logical point of departure. This dissertation examines identity formation through fictional characters living with two identities in the following historical novels: El naranjo by Carlos Fuentes, Gonzalo Guerrero by Eugenio Aguirre, Duerme by Carmen Boullosa, Invasores del paraíso by Herminio Martínez, Memorias del Nuevo Mundo by Homero Aridjis, and Los perros del paraíso by Abel Posse.

This dissertation examines different models of motherhood as represented in major modern novels, taking the late Nineteenth century as a point of departure and concluding with the period known as the “Transición” that followed the dictatorial regime of Francisco Franco (1939-75). This study emphasizes the novels published during and after the Francoist regime.
The current study examines how the role of the mother evolved as various historical, political, and societal changes occurred in Spain. Although, as a general rule, novels often reflect the dominant ideologies of the patriarchal society in which they are written, each of these novels subverts the …

The present study explores works by Gracilaso de la Vega, Gutierre de Cetina, Diego Hurtado the Mendoza, Lope de Vega and Josefa del Castillo, a group of Spanish language writers whose lives span the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth-centuries. The thematic focus is upon sorrow or pain, both as subjective experience in the respective biographies and as a force spurring these authors toward the production of their verse. To this end, several poetic compositions have been examined, applying methodological techniques derived from Dámaso Alonso, José María Díez Borque, Tomás Navarro and Elizabeth Wilhelmsen. The article is an overview on recent scholarship dealing Ancien Régime convent writing. Although nuns constitute a large percentage of the seventeenth-century women authors whose writings were published, except for a few figures like Marie de l’Incarnation Guyart or the Port-Royal nuns, their texts have been largely ignored, even by scholars engaged in the retrieval of women’s writing during the period. This is in contrast to Italian and Hispanic studies, where the contribution of convent writing is acknowledged as central. Early modern nuns seem poles apart from women in the West today. They strove after an ideal of perfection that stressed humility, intellectual simplicity, asceticism, and submission that is the opposite of the autonomy and empowerment the contemporary feminist movement proposes for women. Even during the Ancien Régime nuns were isolated from their own society by the Council of Trent's revitalization of clausura. To modern eyes, the cloistered nun epitomizes a hierarchical church that cut a woman off from her own society, leaving her little initiative or voice. The great amount of writing by early modern nuns that was published during the Ancien Régime is underexploited because no master list of it exists. For example, at least ninety books by some sixty different nuns were published between 1600 and 1700, and many more that have been published since. The Checklist of over 300 items is an effort to fill this gap. Besides books authored by nuns, it includes many biographies that contain samples of their writings. Short occasional texts, such as death notices, lettres circulaires, and legal factums have generally been excluded, however. Unless another location is noted, …

In many respects, the Fables ou Histoires allégoriques of Marie-Catherine Desjardins, more commonly known as Madame de Villedieu (1640?–1683), can be read in terms of the sexual politics of neo-classical France. Unlike many of her other works, the Fables serve in part as a defense and illustration of female presence and sexuality. Wohl im Herbst 1785, kurz nachdem er von seiner Herbstvakanz in Niirtingen zur niederen Klosterschule in Denkendorf zurückgekehrt war, schrieb der funfzehnjährige Hölderlin einen Brief an seinen ehemaligen Pfarrer und Lehrer, den Nürtinger Diakon Nathanaël Köstlin (1744–1826). Es handelt sich um Hölderlins ersten erhaltenen Brief und den einzig erhaltenen Brief des Dichters an Köstlin.
