In the last twenty years a number of scholars have discovered growing evidence for revolutionary sympathy and activity among German intellectuals living during the French Revolution. Axel Kuhn, historian at the Technische Hochschule in Stuttgart, has contributed to this body of research with his study of the Hohe Carlsschule, the military academy founded in Stuttgart by Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg, famous for its oppressively strict discipline and its exceptionally talented students, including Friedrich Schiller. Till is the projection of anxieties arising in the face of social instability. Bote, who was witness to just how fragile the given order of patrician rule in Brunswick was, was sensible both to its weaknesses and to its preferability to disorder. The shifting locus of perverseness in TE provides an adequate structure for Bote, who is critical of his society, but uneasy about the forces threatening to tear it apart altogether. Martin Luther maintains throughout his work, and with special emphasis in On the Bondage of the Will, that Scripture is clear. Unlike Erasmus, who warns that we should avoid obscure parts of Scripture that, like the Cave of Corycos, would lure us too close to terrors beyond our comprehension, Luther argues that Scripture has been placed in the clearest light by the coming of Christ, in whom all of Scripture's mysteries have been revealed. It consists of 23 articles that originally were presented at a colloquium held in Heidelberg in the fall of 1985 on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of Heidelberg University. Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko (1853-1921) turned his personal experiences as a political prisoner in Siberia into short stories that champion the talents of Siberia's ordinary people. These stories of Siberia have been noted by critics for their techniques of composition. His contemporaries like A. P. Chekhov and V. M. Garshin praise his craftsmanship and skill to compose aesthetically appealing short stories. The issue we are addressing here concerns how – or if -- we can take non-serious language seriously, or even legitimate it. Derrida wishes to consider marginal, parasitic, borderline cases, because they give him “insight into the general functioning of a textual system.” If we simply identify and banish the parasite, we will end up retracing the boundaries of convention; if we look at the parasite as part of a whole system, then our perspective goes beyond that of the insider. Seventeen poets are included, each represented with several poems (between six and eight is the norm, with Goethe at the high end with eighteen, and Novalis at the low, with two). The poems are in German only; Swales' intrduction and notes (an intrductory paragraph on each author and brief synopses of each poem along with some formal observations) are in English. Nachdenken über Christa T. is one of the most widely discussed novels in GDR literature, and a reviewer therefore approaches a new book-length interpretation with some trepidation. However, Wolfram and Helmtrud Mauser's study is fresh, insightful, and clearly written. The volume simultaneously does justice to a very difficult text and situates it intelligently in the context of GDR literature of the 1960s and 1970s. While their interpretation is not exhaustive, the authors demonstrate familiarity with the large body of Wolf literature, and their notes point the reader to other interpretative approaches.

Eric Santner's study, "intended both as a 'revisionist' reading of Hölderlin's later poetry and an introduction to a larger study of issues concerning narrative theory," interprets formal aspects of the later poems—what has traditionally been called their harte Fügung—in terms of narrative parataxis, i.e. a breakdown in the Idealist "narrative of redemption." Santner begins with a theoretical discussion of narrative drawn chiefly from Hayden White and Roland Barthes (especially from Camera Lucida). Opposing "narrative vigilance," that potentially pathological compulsion to comprehend particulars within a hypotactic, overarching narrative structure, is a strategy of parataxis whereby narrative vigilance is released …

The topos of the window and analogous framing devices is one of the recurrent characteristics of Flaubert's work, and, as examples of this discretionary practice, one need recall only some of the many scenes that are framed by windows: the view of Yonville through the carriage window or the stainedglass window that is, very nearly, La Légende de Saint Julien l'hospitalier. But windows are only incidentally our concern, for as the views of Yvetot and Constantinople equally signify something beyond themselves, so does this topos tie into a larger question, which is the evolution of Flaubert's practice of closure.

Uwe Johnson is seldom discussed as a GDR author, for it was not until after his 1959 decision «to relocate,» as he put it, to the West that Johnson became established as a literary force. In this comparative study, it is Louis Marvick's aim to read Mallarmé’s prose writings in light of the historical discussion of the sublime as a category of esthetic experience. Understanding of the sublime comes primarily from Longinus and the English tradition (Burke, Dr. Johnson, Hazlitt, Coleridge), filtered through Kant's "Analytic of the Sublime." This study starts from the premise that the young Flaubert had difficulty sustaining his narratives, that once underway, the opposing efforts of both narrator and character to promote their individual interests within the text led to an impasse, a kind of narrational death, which required a particular strategy (presumably on the part of the author) to circumvent the difficulty and keep things going. For Ginsburg this "stammering" (1) was a problem that Flaubert never quite outgrew. On August 31, 1984, the Tübingen Germanist Reinhard Breymayer published an article in the Stuttgarter Zeitung announcing his discovery of a poem with the heading “Gesungen bei der Einweihung eines Gartenhauses, das zur Aufschrift hat: SERENITY,” which he believed could be ascribed conclusively to Friedrich Hölderlin. The announcement sparked off a minor controversy among several Germanists which was documented in the European press, the most critical voice being that of Jochen Hieber (FAZ, September 17, 1984; FAZ, October 22, 1984). Alan Frank Keele sets out to identify an "apocalyptic vision" of German society in postwar German literature and to describe the literary figures who see it and spread their warnings about it. The vision consists of runaway technology, evil toys, aborted children, and "de-humanized robot/citizens" (p. 125). Those who see and seek to share this vision are the physically and psychologically walking wounded, refugees from a war-torn world, who reject the values of postwar society.

In this comparative study, it is Richard E. Goodkin's subtly argued project to discuss dramatic tragedy and poetic symbolism as two responses to the problem of establishing what is most human in language, what Goodkin calls home. To be sure, Heidegger lies behind part of the author's development of this image. Yet, the principal force of the metaphor comes from a close reading of the texts under study, where the concept of home is tied to human attempts to exceed human limits, leading to self-recognition. Thus, he brings together tragedy and symbolism and shows their common vocabulary and concerns.

Le Taureau blanc (1774) offers remarkable insight into Voltaire's use of the conte as persuasive discourse for two reasons. Over the past sixty-five years of Mallarméan criticism, few poems have come to occupy as central a place in the discussion of the poet's work as "Prose pour des Esseintes." This paper presents a checklist to help teachers identify the relevant aspects of the arts for study. France's most prominent philosopher of the second half of the seventeenth century is reputed to be no friend of rhetoric. En 1969 el profesor José Manuel Blecua sacó a luz un «esperpentillo» de Don Ramón María del Valle-Inclán.ʹ Se trata de «¿Para cuándo son las reclamaciones diplomáticas? .» que apareció en el No. 329 de la revista España el15 de julio de 1922. «Teatro de agit-prop,» le llama Juan Antonio Hormigón] quien ve en él un «sentido directo, de denuncia específica, de incitación a la repulsa y condena de determinados comportamientos sociales,» es decir, características de ese tipo de teatro, «una de las constantes del esperpento.» Sin entrar a discutir esta denominación aplicada a la totalidad de los esperpentos …
