Throughout my career as faculty and administrator in higher education I have been honored with the opportunity to introduce and celebrate the publication of scholarly work by colleagues and graduate students in many disciplines and institutions around the world. After more than three decades of doing so, this is the first time that I have the pleasure of introducing a formal publication of work created by a talented group of undergraduate scholars. Facilitating Lexical Acquisition In Beginner Learners Of Italian Through Task-Induced Involvement Load, Vanessa J. Natale Rukholm

The Coastal Review

This empirical study explores the facilitation of lexical acquisition and retention through an incidental experiment examining the effect of Involvement Load on Italian vocabulary growth among beginner learners. The experiment, with a pre-test/post-test design investigates the facilitative effects of elaborate processing on L2 lexical acquisition and retention. Participants in sections of the same first-year Italian course were divided into one of five groups consisting of a Control Group and four Treatment groups. Treatment groups were divided based on level of Involvement (Laufer & Hulstijn, 2001) such that some groups processed target words elaborately (Craik, 2002; Lockhart, 2002) through vocabulary exercises …

En este ensayo se lleva a cabo un análisis de la violencia en tres obras del ciclo Los papeles del infierno de Enrique Buenaventura. Con ese propósito se aplican las categorías de violencia propuestas por S. Žižek y los análisis sobre la violencia en el teatro latinoamericano de ese periodo llevados a cabo por Severino Albuquerque (1991) y Diana Taylor (1991). Concluyo que este ciclo es un conjunto de obras que da testimonio de la violencia sistémica y simbólica en Colombia durante los años 50 y 60, y que las obras de Buenaventura hacen visible la violencia objetiva por medio …

Malika Mokeddem s’inscrit dans la lignée d’écrivaines francophones qui traitent dans leurs textes de la situation socio-politique et culturelle de la femme en Algérie, mais aussi de l’entre-deux dans lequel se situent les femmes migrantes. On ne peut s’empêcher de noter que, sur les dix romans publiés jusqu'à date, aucune de ses héroïnes ne connait la sérénité dans le couple et elles rejettent toutes la maternité. Nous nous interrogerons donc, dans cet article sur les raisons de ces manques, afin de voir si on peut y lire plutôt une affirmation absolue de la liberté de la femme que des échecs. …

Cet article traite le dépassement des frontières des harraga (des sans-papiers) du Maghreb vers l’Europe (à travers l’Espagne) tout en analysant ce que cela implique du point de vue des lois d’immigration, de l’idée de la clandestinité ainsi que des créations d’une identité musulmane qui s’oppose à l’identité européenne. L’article s’attarde aussi sur l’historique des relations compliquées entre le Maghreb et l’Espagne en termes de relations (post)coloniales. The article looks at the evolution of the ethnonym Francois in the Middle Ages and its significance to Germanic peoples known as Franks in the context of their cross-cultural relations with Muslim, Byzantine and British people. The author analyzes chronicles of the First Crusade and examines the use of Francois as an exonym and an autonym, and its role in the development of the French identity.

Grammatical gender in French language is one of the biggest guessing games for a native English speaker. Why a table is feminine and a book is masculine is a question that plagues those learning French as a second language. In French, all nouns have gender, masculine and feminine. The complication: only a small percentage of the nouns are assigned gender semantically leaving the remaining which are assigned gender seemingly arbitrarily. For English native speakers, the distinction of these basic parts in a foreign language is not a natural skill. The simple fact that nouns are either feminine or masculine is …

Dans son roman, Leila : Avoir 17 ans dans un camp de harkis, Dalila Kerchouche retrace le parcours de ceux dont la jeunesse fut passée/gâchée dans les camps de la relégation. À travers le regard blessé d’une adolescente de 17 ans, on découvre ce que l’histoire officielle a voulu couvrir du manteau de l’oubli : l’arrivée précipitée des harkis et leurs familles en France, leur dur quotidien dans les camps en marge de la communauté nationale, leur dépouillement, les humiliations, les souffrances, les folies et une gestion étatique aussi choquante qu’incohérente.
