The Repartimiento System Of Native Labor In Colonial Spanish America, 1549-1601, Arthur R. Steele Aug 1949

The Repartimiento System Of Native Labor In Colonial Spanish America, 1549-1601, Arthur R. Steele

Latin American Studies ETDs

This essay will describe the early history of the second form of repartimiento discussed above, viz., the system of forced labor for pay introduced subsequent to 1549. Although the term repartimiento was generally employed in all parts of Spanish America to describe this program of compulsory native labor, special native terms were also used in particular areas. In Peru the Quechua designation mita was very frequently applied as synonymous with repartimiento, while in New Spain a modified Nahuatl word, cuatequil, came into use, although its acceptance appears to have been much less widespread.

Benito Perez Galdos And The Concept Of Honor, Sabine R. Ulibarrí May 1949

Benito Perez Galdos And The Concept Of Honor, Sabine R. Ulibarrí

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Galdós, perhaps better than anyone else, caught the real spirit of Spain. He knew intimately Spain and her people. He thoughtfully examined the character of the Spaniard, and weighed his good qualities and his bad. The novelist's aim was always to bring to the attention of Spain her strong points and her defects, that she might build on the former and rid herself of the latter. Thus, his novels are directed at social and psychological reform. He wanted to create a new national consciousness, based on a combination of the old virtues and the new ideas.

T.S. Eliot And Pablo Neruda; A Study In Contemporary Attitudes, Betsy Scone Nov 1948

T.S. Eliot And Pablo Neruda; A Study In Contemporary Attitudes, Betsy Scone

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Pablo Neruda of Chile and T. S. Eliot of England are two writers who have achieved the status of major poet in their respective countries. The recognition which they have earned is not solely for their mastery of the technicalities of the craft. Indeed, when the name of either poet is mentioned, it is frequently as the name of one who expressed the situation of man in a world which seems to have lost its equilibrium. They are interpreters of the the role of humanity in an unquiet age.

An Analytical Study Of La Celestina, Ben Sandoval Jun 1948

An Analytical Study Of La Celestina, Ben Sandoval

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

We have learned that the greatest difference between the Middle Ages and Renaissance times was the tremendous cultural upheaval that developed a rather complete change of attitudes and values. Life itself was the objective and not a mere preparation for another life. To the Medieval person the ego and the objective of living are idealized. One must enjoy everything. Much more importance was attached to physical existence. In this, the Renaissance contradicts flatly the attitude of the Middle Ages. Man began to feel that he should enjoy life and that its legitimate pleasures held no harm. Joy of living, however, …

The Portuguese Complimentary Infinitive After Nouns And Adjectives, Peter J. Lunardini May 1948

The Portuguese Complimentary Infinitive After Nouns And Adjectives, Peter J. Lunardini

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The Portuguese usage of the preposition following verbs has been thoroughly studied by Francisco Fernandes in his Dictionàrio de verbos e regimes. However, the preposition required to supplement a noun or an adjective before a complementary infinitive has been virtually excluded from Portuguese dictionaries. It is the purpose of this thesis to present a study, together with examples, of this important phase of Portuguese syntax.

To obtain this information, thirty-one works of nineteen modern Portuguese and Brazilian authors were carefully examined, and the prepositional usage was recorded. The following general conclusions are based upon approximately 4,000 examples collected.

Benito Pérez Galdós And Dramatic Technique, Albert V. Wilson May 1948

Benito Pérez Galdós And Dramatic Technique, Albert V. Wilson

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Pérez Galdós undoubtedly will be remembered as the greatest novelist of nineteenth century Spain, but if one had asked him his occupation, the response probably would have been "a dramatist." Galdós had dramatic tendencies from the very beginning of his literary career, and his greatest ambition was to write for the theater. While still a student at the Colegio de las Palmas, his first dramatic effort emerged. It was a historical one-act drama in verse entitled Quien mal hace bien no espere. Naturally, manifestations of adolescent romanticism are everywhere evident in this youthful attempt of Galdós, but the play is …

Historical And Liberal Elements In Mariano Azuela, William D. Reyburn Jan 1948

Historical And Liberal Elements In Mariano Azuela, William D. Reyburn

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

An unprejudiced study of the history of Mexico normally leads to a liberal position with regard to the peoples and problems of that country. Mariano Azuela, often called the Novelist of the Mexican Revolution, is unquestionably one of his country's greatest liberal minds. The liberal position which stems from conviction and experience is not to be confused with the philosophy and theories of political liberalism.

Modern Women Poets Of Brazil, Marie Pope Wallis Jun 1947

Modern Women Poets Of Brazil, Marie Pope Wallis

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This study was written to introduce the poetry of Brazil's leading women poets to the English-speaking world. The poetry of Brazilian women, in particular, is practically unknown to the Brazilian as well as to the English-speaking public.

There were four criteria for the selection of these particular five living women poets. They were chosen on the basis of volume of published works. Several poetesses of promise had to be omitted because their publications were …

Latin American Studies ETDs

This bibliography is an attempt to list with as much thoroughness as possible all available material pertaining to the German element in Latin America. Undoubtedly no bibliography can ever be complete, and this one is no exception to the rule. Lack of easily available references as well as certain handicaps imposed by the uncertainties of army life have limited the completeness of this compilation.

Folklore In The Contemporary Spanish American Novel, Anita M. Noble Oct 1944

Folklore In The Contemporary Spanish American Novel, Anita M. Noble

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The novel of Spanish America is especially rich in all types of folklore. This is particularly due to the fusion of the Spanish and the Indian peoples in a common life with different cultural heritages.

"Sometimes one type of folklore, sometimes another, finds great favor among a certain folk." Thus we will notice that witchcraft as a religious rite predominates in the people of Indian culture. Magic and the supernatural stand out in all the classifications of the folklore of this race and is therefore evident in the Latin American novel dealing with the Indian people, or people from a …

Problems Of Contemporary Mexico As Seen In The Works Of Mariano Azuela, Jose Antonio Flores

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Relatively little has been written concerning Mariano Azuela and his works in comparison to critical material on Mexican authors. Since Azuela is the recognized novelist of the the Mexican Revolution, it is necessary that intimate acquaintance with the man and his works be made in order to understand the problems, feelings, and aspirations of the Mexican people immediately prior to and during the Revolution.

The aim of this thesis is to examine critically the novels of Azuela in view of the known facts of the Mexican Revolution principally as they touch upon the religious, social, economic, and political aspects.

It is the aim of this introduction to give the student of Spanish language and literature some tangible background as a preparation and aid for the appreciation of El Equipaje Del Rey José. It will be an aid to the student to have some explanation of the …

Bolivar : A Biographical Play In Eight Scenes, Arthur Randolph Farey Jan 1939

Bolivar : A Biographical Play In Eight Scenes, Arthur Randolph Farey

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The story of "El Libertador", Simon Bolivar, greatest figure of South American history, may be pursued through seemingly endless sources of extant written material. The Bibliography of Simon Bolivar compiled by the library of the Pan-American Union is, in itself, an extensive volume; hundreds of his letters and documents have been preserved, and his biographers are numbered by scores. Throughout the nineteenth century he remained one of the most popularized of new world figures, and although he has lost considerable identity in the United States during the twentieth century, he continues to be written about. Man Of Glory by D. …

These authors have each created a pair similar to Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, and each shows in his creation the influence of Cervantes' characters. These authors represent three different national literatures and three successive centuries. They are: Henry Fielding of eighteenth-century England; Alphonse Daudet of nineteenth-century France; and Jacinto Benavente of twentieth-century Spain. We have chosen for this study: Tom Jones, the History …

Lo Castizo In The Theatre Of Jacinto Benavente, Lois M. Beckett Aug 1937

Lo Castizo In The Theatre Of Jacinto Benavente, Lois M. Beckett

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Jacinto Benavente, known as the creator of the modern drama of Spain, has been the subject of controversial opinions. One reason may be that he has continued to write after his own manner and ideas despite the initial reception accorded him by Spanish critics and audiences. Another cause may conceivably be that his theatre differs strikingly in outward appearance from that of the Golden Age. A third reason is undoubtedly that Benavente has come to be popular with his own people after a patient struggle against their indignation, and he has been recognized as a writer of first importance.

A Critical Study Of The Spanish Picaresque Novel And A Comparison Of The Picaresque Elements With Certain Phases Of New Mexican Folklore, Elias W. Telles

To do this, picaresque literature will be studied from the first known novels to the present time. This peculiar form of literature will be compared with Spanish life as well and with the life reflected in the folklore of New Mexico.
