The Canal, a vibrant community of Latino immigrant families, is rich in diversity and cultural traditions, strong family networks, and a determination towards economic selfsufficiency. Latino immigrants in Marin County are heavily concentrated in the Canal and have the highest labor force participation rates in the County.i Despite being a vital part of Marin’s social, economic, and cultural society, Canal residents continue to struggle to meet basic necessities for their families.

To this end, a coalition of resident leaders from the community came together to form Voces del Canal to lead an unprecedented community-driven research project. Residents wanted to affirm …

Yucatán's Pirate Novels And The Discursive Mayan Rebel In The Nineteenth-Century Criollo Imaginary, Sarah West May 2019

Yucatán's Pirate Novels And The Discursive Mayan Rebel In The Nineteenth-Century Criollo Imaginary, Sarah West

Sarah West

During Yucatán’s Caste War, described in the nineteenth century as the Mayan
rebel uprising against criollo (European-identified) hegemony, more than half
the Yucatán Peninsula’s population either perished or fled, fearing for their lives.
As one of the most violent indigenous uprisings in the Americas, it was also one
of the longest: the Caste Wars tormented the Mexican Southeast for over 50 years.
While historical scholarship has examined the Caste War at length, the study of
the peninsula’s literary production has yet to be considered for the contribution it
makes to fully understanding the sociohistorical context of the war. In this …

New York 1987, Tyler Fisher Dec 2018

New York 1987, Tyler Fisher

Tyler Fisher

Dedicated to the Puerto Rican poet Julia de Burgos (1914-1953), Sherezada (Chiqui) Vicioso's evocation of New York City conjures up a sensory experience of the bustling metropolis alongside references to its international, and especially Latino, ingredients. Vicioso depicts a city that is infused with but strangely unaware of its Hispanic heritage, which her enumeration of food, music, contraband, Afro-Caribbean spirits, and expatriates calls to the surface. The poem’s minimal punctuation, idiosyncratic line- and word-divisions, wordplay, blend of archaic and current diction, and sporadically disjointed syntax underscore a crowded, onrushing, almost incantatory medley of past and present, local and transnational. …

Indigenous Experiences In Agricultural Production In Ecuador: Sustaining And Ancient Cultural Tradition Of Growing And Consuming Quinoa, Sumac Elisa Cárdenas Oleas Nov 2017

Indigenous Experiences In Agricultural Production In Ecuador: Sustaining And Ancient Cultural Tradition Of Growing And Consuming Quinoa, Sumac Elisa Cárdenas Oleas

Elisa Cardenas

Colonialization’s racism and discrimination in Latin America have pushed many indigenous populations to poverty in isolated rural areas with limited access to resources, education, and technology, particularly as relates to agriculture, their main source of income and employment. Governments and development organizations recognize agriculture as a key channel for developmental growth in rural areas. Fundamyf, a non-governmental organization, has focused on promoting agricultural growth to increase the quality of life of small-scale indigenous producers through the production, consumption, and sale of quinoa. While quinoa is an ancient crop traditionally consumed and produced by indigenous populations in the Andes of South …

Research suggests that teaching in international settings fosters professional growth and promotes tolerance for working in multicultural and linguistically diverse classrooms for U.S. teachers upon returning to the U.S. to work in schools. These studies portray teaching abroad as an unproblematic and neutral project, and narrowly focus on the benefit to the individual teacher during their temporary stay in a foreign country and when returning home to the U.S. Absent from these studies are two groups: 1) teachers from the U.S. who work in non-governmental organizations and private school settings abroad, but have no pedagogical training, and 2) host country …

“La Modernización Y Sus Fantasmas: Violencia, Exceso Y Ritual En ‘La Gata De Mi Madre’ De Carlos Fuentes, Jose J. Alvarez

Jose Alvarez

Diseño De Un Curso De Español Para Principiantes Basado En Call, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

Freedom For Ramsey Muniz, Chicano Political Prisoner, Ruben B. Botello Jd

Ruben B Botello JD

SUBJECT: Ramsey Muniz, Prisoner #40288-115 Mr. President: We pray you and your loved ones are doing well. The 1994 Three Strikes law used, to sentence Mr. Ramsey Muniz (Federal Prisoner #40288-115) should never have been applied to his case according to U.S. Assistant Attorney General Jo Ann Harris. (see her below 1995 Memo to all U.S. lawyers) Furthermore, this federal Three Strikes law now held unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court, in Johnson vs. United States, June 26, 2015 (see http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/14pdf/13-7120_p86b.pdf). It was enacted, to put serious violent felons behind bars for life, not defendants like Mr. Muniz who was …

El Turismo En Pátzcuaro (México). Percepciones Del Visitante Extranjero Entre 1880‑1920, Eder García

Eder García

In Mexico, tourism arises as an economic activity around the 1920s, through government agencies and policies for tourism control. Previously, travelers in the country were amazed with what they named as primitive and picturesque, found especially in the rural villages. Patzcuaro was one of the places that best exemplified the picturesque, through an imaginary forged in the mind of the visitor, published in the books where authors reflected their views and experiences. The present paper analyze how this imaginary picturesque of Patzcuaro was showed, becoming a category of Mexican tourism, being even today one of the most attractive offers for …

Violence And Pastoral Care In Putumayo, Colombia, Winifred L. Tate Dec 2014

Violence And Pastoral Care In Putumayo, Colombia, Winifred L. Tate

Winifred L. Tate

The southern Colombian state of Putumayo, a region of frontier colonization along the
Ecuadoran border, has been the scene of entrenched violence and illegal drug production for
more than three decades. During domination by the country’s largest and oldest guerrilla group,
the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), peasant farmers in the area came to
supply more than fifty per cent of the coca used in the world cocaine trade. Beginning in the late
1990s, violence spiked as right-wing paramilitary groups steadily gained control of small towns.
At the same time, the United States orchestrated a major military counter narcotics …

The Aspirational State: State Effects In Putumayo, Winifred L. Tate Dec 2014

The Aspirational State: State Effects In Putumayo, Winifred L. Tate

Winifred L. Tate

At the turn of the millennium, conditions in the Putumayo region of Colombia challenged
virtually every aspect of the standard narrative of the relations between state, society, territory,
citizenship, and rights. The normative ideal of modern state-society relations assumes territorial
control via a state apparatus capable of guaranteeing citizens’ rights and the rule of law when
threatened by illegal activities, armed actors undermining the state’s monopoly of force, or
interference from other nation-states. In Putumayo, however, it was not the national state
apparatus that attempted to safeguard the rights of citizens but rather a criminalized population of
smallholding cocaleros (coca …

Entre La Efervescencia Y La Ruptura De Un Espacio De Placer En Salón De Belleza De Mario Bellatin, Juan Carlos Rocha Osornio

Juan Carlos Rocha Osornio, Ph.D

Pégame Pero No Me Dejes: La Disputa Entre El Espacio Buga Y El Gay En Quizás No Entendí (1997) De Gerardo Guiza Lemus, Juan Carlos Rocha Osornio

Juan Carlos Rocha Osornio, Ph.D

An Unusual Empirical Pattern In An Indigenous Setting: Cooperative Entrepreneurship Among Brazil Nut (Bertholletia Excelsa) Harvesters, Leo Paul Dana, Julie Mallet

Leo- Paul Dana

The rainforest, as a symbol of life and diversity, is currently under the spotlight; its conservation is a challenge. Although for centuries indigenous people developed sustainable activities within that environment, there is concern today about how to develop viable activities that lead to productive entrepreneurship whilst preserving natural capital. This article investigates best practices of entrepreneurs who cooperate in an organisation, leading to sustainable development. Their experience may inspire others to draw new perspectives.
