The Bible is read in a variety of contexts, but with the hundreds of translations in English and controversy over which is “most accurate” or “best,” this thesis examines a brief history of Bible translation, a few translation theories such as formal and functional equivalence, what to look for in a Bible translation, and some of the most common English Bible translations. A study was conducted with college students, focusing primarily on the purpose of each translation and the people who read a specified version. This thesis explores the mind-body experience through an arts-based research approach to examine, and redefine the emotional capacity and usefulness of males through societal determinants that limits and hinders men from living their authentic selves. Through the lens of a metaphoric “Man Box” 112 men participated in a workshop recreating their personal narratives of socialization through, style of dress, coping mechanisms, belief systems and who they should be as men through society's standards. This chapter explores some of the ways in which modern literary theory opens insights into medieval European translations. Rather than drawing a distinction between theoretical approaches that apply to medieval studies and those that do not, I will explore a few examples that might in turn inspire readers to their own insights. It is my hope that over time readers of this Companion to Medieval Translation will posit many more modern theoretical approaches to medieval translation than can be suggested here. We might even imagine that some of the particularities of medieval European theories of translation could themselves be codified …

การศึกษากลวิธีการแปลคำนามและวลีที่ใช้เรียกสตรีเพศ ในสำนวนแปลเรื่อง ห้องส่วนตัว โดย มาลินี แก้วเนตร จากความเรียงแนวสตรีนิยมเรื่อง A Room Of One's Own ของ เวอร์จิเนีย วูล์ฟ, เยาวลักษณ์ กงษี

งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการแปลคำนาม และวลีที่ใช้เรียกสตรีเพศ ในสำนวนแปลเรื่อง ห้องส่วนตัว โดย มาลินี แก้วเนตร จากความเรียงแนวสตรีนิยมเรื่อง A Room of One’s Own ของ เวอร์จิเนีย วูล์ฟ ซึ่งผู้วิจัยได้รวบรวมคำนาม และวลีที่ใช้เรียกขานหรือกล่าวถึงสตรีเพศ เป็นจำนวนทั้งสิ้น 33 คำ เช่น คำว่า feminist, girl, female, wife, lady, woman/women, harlot, courtesan เป็นต้น โดยที่ผู้วิจัยต้องการพิสูจน์สมมติฐานที่ว่า ในการแปลคำนาม และวลีที่ใช้เรียกสตรีเพศ ในสำนวนแปลเรื่อง ห้องส่วนตัว นี้ มีการใช้ 3 กลวิธี ได้แก่ การแปลตรงตัว การแปลแบบตีความ และการแปลแบบทับศัพท์ ผลการวิเคราะห์สรุปได้ว่า ในสำนวนแปลดังกล่าวพบว่ามีการใช้ทั้ง 3 กลวิธีดังกล่าวจริง โดยกลวิธีที่ปรากฏมากที่สุดคือการแปลแบบตรงตัว คิดเป็นร้อยละ 55.06 เพื่อให้ผู้อ่านได้รับสารจากผู้เขียนครบถ้วน และตรงตามเจตนาของผู้เขียน รองลงมาเป็นการแปลแบบตีความ คิดเป็นร้อยละ 42.69 เพื่อให้บทแปล มีความกระจ่างชัด สละสลวย เป็นธรรมชาติ นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่า ในบางบริบทจะมีการเพิ่มคำ และละคำไม่แปล ทั้งในกลวิธีการแปลตรงตัว และการแปลแบบตีความ เพื่อให้บทแปลเป็นธรรมชาติ และเนื้อความไม่ซ้ำซ้อน กลวิธีสุดท้ายที่ปรากฏว่ามีการใช้น้อยที่สุดคือการแปลแบบทับศัพท์ ซึ่งคิดเป็นร้อยละ 2.25 เท่านั้น โดยการแปลแบบ ทับศัพท์ พบได้ใน 2 กรณี ได้แก่ 1. คำภาษาอังกฤษคำนั้นเป็นคำที่คนไทยรู้จักกันเป็นอย่างดี และ 2. คำนั้นเป็นชื่อเรียกตัวละคร ซึ่งมีการใช้การทับศัพท์อย่างกว้างขวางในวงการวรรณกรรม

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษา วิเคราะห์ และคิดค้นกลวิธีการถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาของตัวบทประเภทอรรถสารที่ประพันธ์ด้วยรูปแบบรจนาสารในตัวบทคัดสรรของหนังสือเรื่อง The Seven Lamps of Architecture ของ John Ruskin เพื่อนำไปสู่บทแปลซึ่งมีอรรถรสเทียบเคียงกับต้นฉบับ ผู้วิจัยได้ศึกษาค้นคว้าแนวทางการวิเคราะห์ตัวบทของคริสติอาเน นอร์ด (Christiane Nord) ทฤษฎีสโกพอส (Skopostheorie) ของแคธารินา ไรส์ และ ฮานส์ เจ แฟร์เมียร์ (Katharina Reiss & Hans J. Vermeer) ทฤษฎีการแปลของปีเตอร์ นิวมาร์ก (Peter Newmark) และแนวทางการแปลวัจนลีลา (Stylistic Approaches) ของจีน โบแอส-เบเออร์ (Jean Boase-Beier) รวมถึงความรู้ทางประวัติศาสตร์สถาปัตยกรรมฟื้นฟูกอธิกในยุควิกตอเรียนของประเทศอังกฤษเพื่อเป็นแนวทางในการวิเคราะห์ตัวบทการวิเคราะห์ปัญหาในการถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลา การวางแผนการแปล และการแก้ปัญหาในการถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาดังกล่าว ผลการวิจัยพบว่า การประยุกต์ใช้ทฤษฎีและแนวคิดต่าง ๆ ข้างต้นโดยยึดกลวิธีการแปลแบบสื่อความ (Communicative Translation) และการแปลแบบครบความ (Semantic Translation) ตามทฤษฎีการแปลของ นิวมาร์กเป็นหลัก ร่วมกับการปรับบทแปลทั้งในระดับคำ วลี และโครงสร้างประโยค จะช่วยแก้ไขปัญหาการแปลตัวบทที่มีการใช้วัจนลีลาโดดเด่นได้ในระดับดี โดยสามารถรักษารูปแบบวัจนลีลาและวรรณศิลป์ดั้งเดิม รวมทั้งสามารถคงอรรถรสเทียบเคียงต้นฉบับไว้ได้

สารนิพนธ์นี้ศึกษาการแปลเทพนิยายเรื่อง The Fisherman and His Soul ของออสการ์ ไวลด์ โดยเปรียบเทียบระหว่างสำนวน วิญญาณของชาวประมง ของอ.สนิทวงศ์ และสำนวน ชาวประมงกับจิตวิญญาณ ของวลัยภรณ์ นาคพันธุ์ ผู้วิจัยศึกษาทบทวนทฤษฎีต่างๆ เพื่อหาเกณฑ์ที่เหมาะในการเปรียบเทียบกลุ่มตัวอย่างและวิเคราะห์ตัวบทต้นฉบับก่อนลงมือเปรียบเทียบ การศึกษาเปรียบเทียบยืนยันสมมติฐานการวิจัยว่าสำนวนแปลทั้ง ๒ สำนวนมีความแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยยะสำคัญ กล่าวคือ สำนวนของ อ.สนิทวงศ์ เก็บเนื้อหาสำคัญ วรรณศิลป์ นัยยะซ่อนเร้น ตลอดจนวัฒนธรรมต้นทางไว้ค่อนข้างครบถ้วน ทำให้สำนวนของ อ.สนิทวงศ์มีมิติและน่าสนใจกว่าสำนวนของวลัยภรณ์ที่แปลโดยปรับให้เข้ากับวัฒนธรรมของผู้อ่านปลายทาง ซึ่งทำให้นัยยะซ่อนเร้น ความคิด ความเชื่อ ถ้อยคำประชดประชัน อันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของออสการ์ ไวลด์ไม่ปรากฏเด่นชัด ผลก็คือ สำนวนของ อ.สนิทวงศ์เก็บรักษา “สาร” (message) ของผู้ประพันธ์ เมื่อแปลเป็นภาษาปลายทาง ผู้อ่านชาวไทยจึงได้รับ “สาร” ซึ่งรักษา "รหัสวัฒนธรรม" (culture code) ต้นฉบับได้ครบถ้วน งานวิจัยช่วยให้ได้ข้อสรุปว่า การแปลเทพนิยายที่ดี คือการแปลโดยถ่ายทอดวรรณศิลป์ให้ใกล้เคียงกับต้นฉบับ และแปลโดยถ่ายทอดวัฒนธรรมต้นฉบับมากกว่าปรับให้เข้ากับวัฒนธรรมปลายทาง

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อนำเสนอประมวลศัพท์เรื่องดัชนีสมรรถนะโรงไฟฟ้าซึ่งประกอบด้วยศัพท์ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับสมรรถนะโรงไฟฟ้าด้านความพร้อมเดินเครื่อง ความเชื่อถือได้ และการบำรุงรักษา โดยใช้ทฤษฎีและกระบวนการทางศัพทวิทยาในการจัดประมวลศัพท์อย่างเป็นระบบเพื่อให้ได้ศัพท์เทียบเคียงภาษาไทยซึ่งเป็นผลผลิตสุดท้ายของการทำประมวลศัพท์ที่มีความเหมาะสมและเป็นที่ยอมรับในกลุ่มผู้ใช้งาน และเป็นประโยชน์ในฐานะเครื่องมือสำหรับนักแปล รวมทั้งเป็นแหล่งอ้างอิงการใช้คำที่เกี่ยวข้องกับดัชนีสมรรถนะโรงไฟฟ้าแก่วิศวกรหรือผู้ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับสาขาวิชา รวมทั้งบุคคลทั่วไปที่สนใจศึกษาข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับดัชนีสมรรถนะโรงไฟฟ้า ระเบียบวิธีการจัดทำประมวลศัพท์นี้ประกอบด้วย 6 ขั้นตอน ได้แก่ 1) การกำหนดหัวข้อและขอบเขตของประมวลศัพท์ กลุ่มเป้าหมาย และวัตถุประสงค์ในการจัดทำประมวลศัพท์ 2) การศึกษาและรวบรวมข้อมูลและเอกสารที่เกี่ยวข้องกับดัชนีสมรรถนะโรงไฟฟ้า 3) การสร้างคลังข้อมูลภาษาจากเอกสารดัชนีสมรรถนะโรงไฟฟ้าที่คัดเลือกไว้ 4) การคัดเลือกศัพท์จากคลังข้อมูลภาษา 5) การกำหนดรูปแบบของมโนทัศน์และมโนทัศน์สัมพันธ์ 6) การจัดทำบันทึกข้อมูลศัพท์เบื้องต้น บันทึกข้อมูลศัพท์ พร้อมนิยามและศัพท์เทียบเคียงภาษาไทย ประมวลศัพท์เรื่องดัชนีสมรรถนะโรงไฟฟ้าประกอบด้วยศัพท์ทั้งหมด 39 คำ โดยจัดเรียงตามกลุ่มมโนทัศน์สัมพันธ์และได้รวบรวมไว้ในดัชนีค้นคำศัพท์ท้ายเล่มตามลำดับตัวอักษรภาษาอังกฤษ บันทึกข้อมูลศัพท์ประกอบด้วย ศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษ ศัพท์เทียบเคียงภาษาไทย ประเภททางไวยากรณ์ บริบทที่พบศัพท์ นิยาม ข้อมูลทางภาษา เช่น คำเหมือน คำตรงกันข้าม และข้อมูลอ้างอิง
