Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in an unprecedented period of online communication among children. This paper aims to exemplify how the reliance on digital communication platforms compelled by COVID-19 affected elementary students’ use of language. Within the study, children used primarily visual language on digital sites with friends. There were two main forms of primary research in this study. The first consisted of a survey of 16 parents of elementary school children in my school district. The second was an observation of Zoom chat room activity among three eight-year-olds. In this article, inspired from our researches in sociolinguistics, we suggest that translation is a permanent process which is not only linked to switching from one language to another, but is also linked to the action of speaking itself. “Allophone pupils”, foreigners in a sense that they don’t speak French, are for the teachers we interviewed a kind of limit which could to be used to question the boundaries between languages and the understanding of otherness. Translating a literary text is rarely limited to the translation of powerfully lyrical descriptions or soliloquys. In Jane Austen’s Emma, the translator is confronted with a narrative full of dialogue involving around a dozen central characters, all of whom spend most of their time happily exchanging and passing on pleasantries, news, and rumours. In this article, I will examine how gossiping has been studied in English-language and French-language literary and theoretical discourse, and whether potential metadiscursive discrepancies between the two language cultures may have an impact on published translations of the novel. Based on many characteristics such as social and economic contexts in which evolve characters in James Joyce’s Dubliners, different interpretations can be made. Language is a system of signifiers, and of the concepts signified by them; concepts which, as de Saussure has shown, are delineated by the relations between the semiotic signs which constitute language. Thus, understood as a system of concepts, then as Wittgenstein, Quine and Derrida et al. recognized, language delineates the thoughts and understanding which it constitutes. Moreover, insofar as Hermeneutic Phenomenologists such as Heidegger recognized, and as cognitive psychologists such as Ames, and the Gestaltists, have demonstrated, our concepts mediate even our most basic perceptions, then language mediates, and thus delineates, our very experiences of the world also.

In this article, Edoardo Sanguineti’s translation of Molière’s Dom Juan serves as a case study for a reflection on the transformative action of translation, based on the interaction of three categories: hermeneutics, temporality and orality. More precisely, the translator’s interpretative horizon – here, specifically, his vision of theatre, translation and the classic – is presented as the source of a transformative handling of orality in translation. The notion of empathy, so often used today in social psychology, has sparked an increasing interest in recent years among researchers in the field of translation studies. In this article, we will first examine the main historical antecedents of the concept of empathy and study how it manifests itself in translation in general and in subtitling in particular. We will then analyze how empathy, emotional intelligence, culture and translation are related as well as the fundamental role translators play in the translating process. Finally, we will investigate empathy and the translation of nonverbal cues in films.

The aim of this study is to objectively analyze the provision of online Chinese courses during the Coronavirus lockdown in Lebanon, concerning its success and its disadvantages. Offering online courses is a new challenge for both Chinese teachers and learners; therefore, after around eight weeks of online courses, we put a questionnaire online addressed to the adult Chinese learners in Lebanon in order to investigate the results of the Chinese online courses. Historically, the discipline of translation studies has undergone many changes affecting its essence, research methods, topics, tools, as well as stakeholders’ role(s). Yet, there is still much to be transformed in regards to turns (Snell-Hornby, 2006), technological advances and mainstream discourses. Aimed at investigating the role of translation as an income-generating activity, this article reviews how translation has changed – from the Tower of Babel to the digital age – highlighting some on-field realities and prominent training challenges, with a focus on translators’ activities as entrepreneurs.

This article analyses the translational strategies of the Sufi lexicon by means of a series of comparisons between the Persian text of Rūmī’s Fīhī mā fīhi (d. 1273) and its French translation, Le livre du dedans (1976). The English translation by Arthur John Arberry (1961) and its modern retranslation by Doug Marman (2010) are also put into perspective. To conduct this analysis, the translational approaches of three key terms – Ḥaqq (the Truth), esteghrāq (the state of immersion) and faqr (the state of poverty) – are analysed using a methodology of translation criticism that is inspired by Henri Meschonnic’s Poétique …
