Part I of this paper, which appeared in the last number of the Quarterly, recorded Call’s birth in Russellville, Kentucky; the removal, in his boyhood, to Tallahassee ; his early legal and political activities; his service in. the Confederate States army; his election to the United States Senate in 1865, and the refusal of that body to seat him; his removal to Jacksonville in 1867 or 1868; his defeat for United States senator in 1875; and his successive defeats for presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1868, 1872, and 1876. According to Prof. F. H. Hodder, in the introduction to his reprint of Pittman’s work entitled “The Present State of the European Settlements on the Mississippi,” there are but few available biographical data pertaining to Pittman. Hodder there presents such information as he was able to collect. Apparently Pittman must have accompanied the first British detachment occupying Florida, he states that he “resided four years as an engineer in those parts” and it is known that he left towards the close of 1768. If Wilkinson Call was fortunate politically in being of a family already prominent in Florida affairs, he may have suffered historically as the nephew of a great uncle and the uncle of a great nephew; his own colorful career, including eighteen years as a United States senator, being obscured by the earlier glory of Richard Keith Call, as soldier and territorial governor of Florida, and to the present generation by the recent service of Rhydon M. In 1562, Jean Ribault, seeking a location in the new world for a colony of Huguenots from France, discovered the St. Johns River. He went ashore on Batten Island at the mouth of the river, where he and his party united in a prayer of thanksgiving for the safe journey across the sea. This seems to have been the first service of the Protestant faith in North America. Leaving a marker of possession at the mouth of the river, on the south side, Ribault sailed northward along the coast. Near Port Royal, South Carolina, he left a small party of …

The following account of the Florida secession convention is taken from the manuscript diary of Edmund Ruffin in the Library of Congress. Ruffin was perhaps the most eminent southern authority on agriculture in the twenty years preceding the Civil War and his experiments in soil fertility, described in his Essays on Calcareous Manures and in the columns of the Farmers’ Register which he edited, brought an agricultural renaissance to his native Virginia. Ruffin early became convinced that the interests of the agricultural South demanded that she cut loose from the Industrial North and form a Southern Confederacy. So ardent were …

The legislative council of Florida met and organized at Pensacola on the 22d July. The governor administered the oath to the members to support the constitution of the United States, &c. A motion was made by Mr. Miller to proceed to elect. a president-the council adjourned without going into an election. On the 23d the council having met, Mr. Bronaugh was called to the chair, when they proceeded to elect a president, and the choice was unanimous of James C. Bronaugh, esq. of Pensacola.

Any attempt to investigate the origin and customs of the aborigines of Florida through reliance on written materials is almost immediately frustrated by the paucity of such material and the scantiness of data available. Even an attempt to summarize the work done by field investigators leads to the baffling task of trying to reconcile conflicting theories, a condition that arises from the fact that the conclusions reached as to the origin, antiquity, and life of the early peoples of Florida are so indefinite. Yet there are few regions in the United States more abundantly supplied with mounds that call for …
