8-Day Dietz Lantern, circa. 1934. The Dietz 8-Day model came in two forms with the first being the "Square" fuel tank. The 8-Day used a special Fresnel globe, which was an alteration to the globes used for the Dietz Little Wizard model. The globe is also a LOC-NOB. LOC-NOB refers to the pair of ears on a Dietz lantern globe used to keep the globe from falling out when tilting the globe plate for lighting or trimming the wick. Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

This project developed a GIS to assist with the identification of deeply buried archeological sites in alluvial settings across Nebraska with the exception of the Sandhills region. Soil survey data, previous geoarcheological investigations, landform position, and other information was used to rank the potential of any stream valley setting as low, low-moderate, moderate-high, or high potential to contain buried soils (paleosols). While the presence of buried soils does not necessarily translate to presence of buried archeological sites, the potential for such sites is far greater in paleosols. This thesis expands upon food historian Camille Bégin's assertion that the "America Eats" manuscript of the New Deal's Federal Writers' Project was "in tune with the interwar revival of regionalism" in the United States. Using archival material associated with the project and regionalist literature of the period, this study explores the dichotomies inherent in the broader regionalist movement of the Depression Era -- particularly using the project's treatment of the American West. Using foodways as the topic and regionalism as the intellectual framework, the FWP employees sought to document what they believed was the authentic culinary character of the nation …

Two days after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation went into effect, James Filor, a southern slaveholder and resident of Key West, Florida, mailed a remarkable letter to the president Filor wrote to convince Lincoln to include Key West with the loyal areas of the South exempted from the proclamation. After assuring the president of Key West's loyalty, Filor pressed his claim for an exemption by arguing that agents of the United States government had induced Key West citizens to purchase additional slaves in the antebellum years. Miami, Florida, has long been considered a Western hemispheric hub; Pan-American Airways, for example, began advertising the city as the "Gateway to the Americas" in the early 1930s. By mid-20th century, some 600,000 people traveling to and from Latin America passed through Miami each year, encouraging the city's Chamber of Commerce to organize a series of inter-American business meetings during the 1950s. The Chamber also waged a battle at that time to abolish a federal tax levied on travelers to the Caribbean and Central America. General Motors’ Futurama exhibit at the 1939-40 New York World’s Fair offered a wildly popular immersive experience of American automobility twenty years in the future. The Fair proclaimed the “Dawn of a New Day” in “The World of Tomorrow” through comprehensive innovative architecture and design, which promoted the primary role of new technology, especially in the field of transportation. During the American Civil War, the United States changed in dramatic fashion. The national crisis of the Civil War encompassed all aspects of the United States. In 1862, a forward-thinking German American intellectual named Francis Lieber lobbied the Lincoln administration to update the United States laws of war. On April 24, 1863, President Lincoln issued General Orders No. 100 or “Instructions for the Government of the Armies of the United States in the Field.” General Orders No. 100, better known as the Lieber Code, modernized the United States laws of war.
