How and more importantly, why did the Benedictines become involved in off-reservation Industrial Schools? In this thesis, it is my goal to answer these questions. The opening of the schools was the result of three factors. First, the Benedictines subscribed to the popular beliefs and stereotypes about the Indians and what should be done with them. Second, the material situation of the mission, as well as the relationship between the Benedictines and the other involved parties on the reservation, created a situation where an off-reservation venture would seem desirable. The challenge of explaining the Civil War has led historians to seek clarity in two ways of thought. One school, the fundamentalists, emphasizes the intrinsic, inevitable conflict between slavery and free labor. The other, the revisionists, emphasizes discrete events and political structures rather than slavery itself. Both sides see crucial parts of the problem, but it has proved difficult to reconcile the perspectives because they approach the Civil War with different assumptions about what drives history.

Religious Tolerance In Sixteenth-Century Switzerland, Edmund J. Campion

Swiss American Historical Society Review

People do not generally associate the sixteenth century in Europe with religious tolerance and such an attitude is understandable, but it overlooks the small but relatively tolerant country of Switzerland. Elsewhere in Europe there was then, in fact, a great deal of religious intolerance and persecution. A few examples will illustrate very nicely how intolerant other European countries were at that time toward other religions.

The Octofoil

The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. The Association is made up of 9th Infantry veterans from WWII and Vietnam, spouses, widows and lineal descendants.

At the time of the Reformation, Valais was under the jurisdiction of France, Savoy and Spanish Milan. In the last decade of the 16th century and then more intensely in the 17th century, it became a theater for the dynamics of this power. Valais stood in a close relationship with their Savoyard neighbors that had evolved from a relationship of competition into a more friendly union by the 16th Century. The first accord came in 1528 when the Duke of Savoy withdrew from the district of Saint-Maurice, (conquered in 1475). In 1536 Valais engaged with Bern in a concentrated battle …
