(Medallion) SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) conducted an intensive cultural resources survey of the proposed Hunt University 35-19 Pipeline which crosses property owned by University of Texas Lands (University Lands) in Reagan County, Texas. The proposed project will be constructed within Medallion’s easement, totaling approximately 2.40 miles (3.86 kilometers [km]) in Reagan County; however, only 2.36 miles (3.80 km) of the project will be on University Lands. Oncor Electric Delivery Company, LLC is planning to construct the Riverton Sw. – Tunstill Point of Delivery (POD) and Arroyo Bluff POD 138-kV transmission line routes in Reeves County, Texas. Halff Associates, Inc., the routing consultant for Oncor, contracted with AR Consultants, Inc. to conduct an intensive pedestrian survey of the 6.57 miles of new 138-kV transmission line on private property. Survey was conducted June 4-6, 2018. Seventeen shovel tests were excavated near drainages, where buried deposits were expected, and two 15-m transects were walked within the 70-ft-wide survey corridor (approximately 54 acres).

In April 2018, personnel from Prewitt and Associates, Inc., conducted an intensive archeological survey of 120 acres of land associated with the proposed Classen-Steubing Park and conservation easement in north-central San Antonio, Texas, under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 8404. The park location is north of Loop 1604 and just west of U.S. Highway 281. The full park development will cover about 204 acres. The western 84 acres of this were included in lands surveyed in 2017 for the Classen-Steubing Master Development Project, leaving 120 acres to be covered by this survey.

(HDR) to conduct an intensive archaeological survey in advance of proposed improvements to the existing Nacogdoches to Nacogdoches SE 138 kV transmission line that runs through property owned by Stephen F. Austin State University (SFASU) (Figure 1). The proposed improvements would involve replacing 13 existing electric transmission structures with new structures. The replacement structures will be located within the existing Oncor right-of-way (ROW) that is approximately 100 feet (ft; 30.5 meters [m]) wide. This report documents the results of an intensive archeological survey carried out in advance of construction of a proposed U.S. Veterans Affairs (VA) outpatient clinic on 25 privately-owned acres in the City of San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. The survey was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. Archeologists from AmaTerra Environmental, Inc. (AmaTerra) visually inspected the entire Area of Potential Effects (APE) and excavated fourteen shovel tests in support of the survey. The City of Sanger is proposing to construct the 3.06-kilometer-long Sanger Outfall Pipeline in Denton County, Texas. Alan Plummer Associates, Inc. contracted with AR Consultants, Inc. to survey a 100-foot-wide corridor along the proposed route. AR Consultants, Inc. hypothesized that there would be low potential for both prehistoric and historic cultural resources. These hypotheses were based on the location of the pipeline route in the narrow Ranger Branch floodplain and lack of mapped historic structures remaining in the project area. On behalf of Targa Pipeline Mid-Continent WestTex LLC, SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) conducted an intensive archaeological survey of the proposed Buffalo to Hogan Project located on lands owned or maintained by the City of Midland, Texas in Martin and Midland counties. The overall project area includes 2.73 miles of pipeline construction within a 100-foot-wide corridor, for a total area of 33.09 acres. The project area lies approximately 16.9 km southeast of Rankin, Texas. All work was conducted under Texas Antiquities Permit Number 8412, as the project is located on lands owned or maintained by the City of Midland, Texas.

At the request of the Port of San Antonio, Pape-Dawson conducted archaeological monitoring of the proposed flood improvements to Building 652 at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. These improvements consisted of construction of walls on the north, south, and west sides of the building to protect the structure from flooding episodes due to road surface run off. These walls are approximately 1,016 feet (ft) (310 meters [m]) in total length, 1 ft (0.30 m) in width, and 3 ft (1 m) in depth.

In April of 2018, on behalf of the City of Austin (COA), Hicks & Company conducted an intensive archeological survey of 2.87 acres for the Buttermilk Creek Stormwater Control Measures Project located in east Austin, Travis County, Texas (Figure 1). The proposed project will entail the modification of the creek channel for a distance of approximately 1,000 feet from just east of Bethune Avenue to just east of Blessing Avenue. Proposed impacts will likely include a concrete weir structure with riser pipe for extended detention and localization bank stabilization measures of stacked boulders and planted soil lifts. This study expands upon a previous analysis of the Clarence H. Webb collection, which resulted in the identification of two discrete shapes used in the manufacture of the base and body of Smithport Plain bottles. The sample includes the Smithport Plain bottles from the Webb collection, and four new bottles: two previously repatriated specimens in the Pohler Collection, and two from the Mitchell site (41BW4) to test whether those specimens align morphologically with the Belcher Mound or Smithport Landing specimens. Results indicate significant allometry and a significant difference in Smithport Plain body and base shapes for bottles produced at the …

The city of Huntington, West Virginia, did not occur gradually, nor did the city grow organically. Collis P. Huntington’s purchase of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad in the winter of 1869 led to the conception of the first new city of a State born out of the Civil War. Collis Huntington specifically chose the future site of Huntington for the terminus of the C&O Railroad to reach areas rich in coal, timber, and agriculture in West Virginia, providing natural resources a way to market. “Impracticable, Inhospitable, and Dismal Country” examines the role of the natural environment in the campaign fought along Tygart’s Valley River in West Virginia during the summer and early fall of 1861. In the weeks following the capitulation of Fort Sumter, it became clear that hostilities would break out in present-day West Virginia. Divided political sentiments between secessionists and Unionists, combined with vital transportation avenues including turnpikes, the Ohio River, and the critical Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, forced the region into the crosshairs of regular military operations. Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A multi-method approach including ground-penetrating radar, magnetometry, historical research, excavations, and artifact analyses was used to gather data at a 17th century archaeological site in South Glastonbury, Connecticut. Interpretation of these data provided evidence that the Europeans who occupied this site were involved in a variety of activities such as agriculture, trade, and developing Indigenous relationships. These activities included cultivating an agricultural surplus instead of relying on subsistence farming, access to trading networks that extended throughout the Colonies and into Europe, and cohabitation with the Indigenous peoples in the area. This research led to an examination of various historical narratives …

Institutional Theory And The History Of District-Level School Reform: A Reintroduction, Judith R. Kafka

In this chapter I make my case for the utility of institutionalism for historians of education, first by explaining institutional theory and how it has been applied to, and shaped by, the study of schooling, and then by applying new theoretical developments to district-level historical research using examples drawn from earlier chapters in this volume. Ultimately, institutional theory may help us to interrogate Tyack and Cuban’s notion of institutional change in schools, by elaborating on their construction of the change process through specific, embedded, settings, and by rethinking how we determine what “counts” as change in schools and districts.
