18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)
The Michigan Polar Bear expedition saw Allied forces leading a controversial excursion into Northern Russia during the concluding years of World War I. Despite thousands of soldiers being sent to interfere with the Russian Civil War, the Polar Bear Expedition has been lost from collective memory. We publicly inquired about the expedition, then combined this research with a found scholarly consensus about the lack of cognizance relating to the events. This revealed a disconnect, which led us to inquire as to the nature and origin of its historical omission. Our primary sources of research focused on the oral histories of …

More Than Republican Motherhood: How Education Helped Women Find Agency In Revolutionary America, Emily J. Miller
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
This thesis is a case study examining the lives of three women who lived in the early American republic: Theodosia Bartow-Burr, Margaret Shippen-Arnold, and Angelica Schuyler-Church, within the context of republican motherhood. While republican motherhood remains a vital concept in the field of early American women’s history, the role was more expansive than historians originally thought. Though all three of these women would remain republican mothers, they would also become “intellectual friends”, “deputy husbands,” and “female politicians,” respectively. By understanding the lives that these women lived within the construct of republican motherhood we gain a fuller and more diverse picture …

Today we are speaking with Rachel Shelden, Associate Professor of History at the University of Oklahoma. She is the author of Washington Brotherhood: Politics, Social Life, and the Coming of the Civil War (University of North Carolina Press, 2013), which received honorable mention for the Wiley-Silver Prize for the best first book on the Civil War and was a selection of the History book club. She is also the co-editor, with Gary W. Gallagher, of A Political Nation: New Directions in Mid-Nineteenth-Century American Political History (University of Virginia Press, 2012). Letters of Cleve Gilliam of the Gilliam Candy Company, “Manufacturers of ‘Blue Grass’ Brand Candies,” Paducah, Kentucky, to Edwin Larrance, Indianapolis, Indiana, whose health problems are inhibiting his work as the company’s Indiana sales representative. Gilliam complains of the decline in business and of the further difficulty of maintaining profits while supplying free sample boxes of candy. The final letter praises Larrance but terminates the company’s arrangement with him.

Genocide Masquerading: The Politics Of The Sharpeville Massacre And Soweto Uprising, Jessica P. Forsee
Honors College Theses
Apartheid South Africa represented a paradox as a US ally and human rights pariah. “Genocide Masquerading” uncovers the implications of US foreign policy on the rise and decline of apartheid, looking specifically at the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre and the 1976 Soweto Uprising. By comparing Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Ford, and Carter foreign policy responses, this thesis creates a comparative analysis of how effective, or ineffective, the United States was during pivotal moments in apartheid history. This thesis will not only expand on the developing South African literature but add to the conversation of international aid, diplomacy practices, and North-South relationships.

In the cultures of Scotland after the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion and the American South after the Civil War, defeatist memories and art featured prominently in mythmaking and served as a focal point for many who wished to make political statements or critiques of current realities. In Scotland, romanticism revolving around “Bonnie Prince Charlie” and the Jacobites in 1745 lessened the burden of defeat for many. Contextualizing their loss within a broader historical framework, which stressed different features depending on the group’s purpose, some Scots utilized Jacobite memory as a potent political critique of Scotland’s place within Great Britain. Most are short notes of thanks, affection or get-well wishes; he asks her to critique his 1960 note “on matters of punctuation and tenses.” Lengthier 1970 letters describe his and wife Emma’s retirement to Hazel, Kentucky and their many contacts with friends from WKU. To Remake A Man: Disability And The Civil War, Cameron T. Sauers
The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
With a disability certificate and discharge from the military in hand, disabled citizens who had not long previously been abled bodied servicemen went through a period of emasculation followed by a return to waged labor which redeemed their sacrifice. These disability certificates were issued in large quantities by the sprawling northern bureaucratic machines created by the Civil War. The above-pictured certificate, issued to James Murray of the 56th New York, discharged Murray from service because, according to his regimental surgeon, he would “never be able to discharge his duty as a soldier.” Murray stood 5’8″ when he re-enlisted for three …

The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruled in favor of several governmental agencies seeking to construct a new bridge in the Pamlico Sound adjacent to North Carolina’s Outer Banks. For years, state and federal agencies have put forth a massive coordinated effort to address the constant weather damage and erosion which occurs to a section of North Carolina Highway 12. The court found the agencies properly cleared NEPA’s environmental review requirements for the bridge’s construction. Additionally, the opponent-litigants’ efforts to add claims challenging the project, based on new information about a shipwreck in the bridge’s path, were futile.
