Pioneer Florida: Sidelights On Early American St. Augustine, T. Frederick Davis
Pioneer Florida: Sidelights On Early American St. Augustine, T. Frederick Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
The Change of Flags, as it is called, designating the official transfer of East Florida from Spain to the United States under the treaty of cession, took place at St. Augustine July 10, 1821.

Material In The National Archives Relating To Florida. 1789-1870, Elizabeth B. Drewry
Florida Historical Quarterly
From the time of the first meetings of the First Continental Congress in 1774, when steps were taken to record the actions of the Congress, there has been an almost continuous agitation for an appreciation of the historical importance of the official records of the United States Government. As the years went by and valuable documents were damaged and lost through fire, inadequate space, neglect and ill-use, the feeling became more widespread that the records of our Government’s activities deserved a better fate than they were receiving. Periodically proposals were made for adequate housing and centralized control. It was not, …
The Beginnings Of Printing In Florida, Douglas C. Mcmurtrie
The Beginnings Of Printing In Florida, Douglas C. Mcmurtrie
Florida Historical Quarterly
Printing came to Florida not as a result of natural expansion with a gradually increasing necessity for a press, nor for the purpose of Christianizing the Indians as was the case in some other areas; printing was introduced there as a result of war conditions outside the province. Florida had passed from Spanish to English hands in 1763 and had remained true to England throughout the Revolution, offering a haven for Tory refugees from the colonies to the north. In 1782 there was a great influx of loyalist Georgians, and later in the year, with the withdrawal of British troops …

The Southern Brigade, 1763-1775, Charles L. Mowat
The Southern Brigade, 1763-1775, Charles L. Mowat
Florida Historical Quarterly
From The Journal of Southern History: The British colonies of East and West Florida differed from their thirteen cousins in so many ways, as evidenced especially in the outcome of the American Revolution, that their close relationship to the thirteen in the mind of the British government is seldom realized. For two decades they were an integral part and the important left flank of the British empire in America, without the possession and security of which, as any military man will hold, it were unwise to advance.
Pioneer Florida: The Beginning Of Tampa, T. Frederick Davis
Pioneer Florida: The Beginning Of Tampa, T. Frederick Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
General Andrew Jackson was responsible for the failure of the first purposed community settlement of whites in the Tampa region. It came about in this way: General Gregor MacGregor, a Scotchman, who had been associated with Bolivar in the South American revolutions, conceived the idea of also liberating the Floridas from Spanish rule. In 1817, he collected a force recruited largely from adventurers hanging loose upon the society of the United States, made a descent upon the island of Amelia in northeast Florida and captured it in June, 1817. He held on for several months, when, his situation becoming precarious …

The Tallahassee Historical Society's "Apalachee", Florida Historical Society
Florida Historical Quarterly
The Tallahassee Historical Society has long been one of the most active local historical associations in Florida. Program meetings are held during each winter at which carefully prepared papers are read, many of them having been written after extensive research. Several of these papers have been published in this Quarterly, and a much larger number were selected and published at intervals as The Annual of the Tallahassee Historical Society in 1934, 1935, 1937 and 1939. These are mimeographed volumes of sixty to one hundred twenty pages.
The Tribulations Of Denys Rolle, Charles L. Mowat
The Tribulations Of Denys Rolle, Charles L. Mowat
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the brief and generally uneventful history of British East Florida greatest interest has, perhaps, attached to the two unusual experiments in colonization which were carried on in the province at New Smyrna and Rollestown. The history of both has been told by Carita Doggett Corse, 1 and to her work there is little to add. It is, however, possible to give some new light on the early difficulties which Denys Rolle met with in his attempts to establish his colony.

The Spring Grove Guards, Samuel E. Cobb
Florida Historical Quarterly
It was in the spring of 1835, a few months before the actual commencement of that long, harrassing conflict between the Indians of Florida and the whites. Pioneer settlers in Florida had been subject to sporadic attacks by the Indians for many months. A few lives had been lost but, at this time, the conflict between the Indians, who claimed prior possession of the country, and the whites, who claimed ownership under the treaties of 1823 and 1832 had hardly reached a state of warfare.
Pioneer Florida: A Free Public School In St. Augustine, 1832, T. Frederick Davis
Pioneer Florida: A Free Public School In St. Augustine, 1832, T. Frederick Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
This is an account of the first public school, under the American system of support by property taxation, established in Florida after it became a possession of the United States by transfer from Spain in 1821. The school was opened in St. Augustine in 1832, and these facts concerning it are derived largely from the contemporaneous St. Augustine Florida Herald, copies of which are in the Library of Congress. Apparently there are no extant official records of the establishment of this school, and it seems to be unknown to writers on Florida’s early educational movements. Therefore, the ordinances concerning the …
The Wrecking Business On The Florida Reef, 1822-1860, Dorothy Dodd
The Wrecking Business On The Florida Reef, 1822-1860, Dorothy Dodd
Florida Historical Quarterly
The Gulf of Mexico is a great inland sea with two outlets, the Canal de Yucatan between Yucatan and Cuba, and the Straits of Florida between Cuba and Florida. Because of the adverse winds and currents that prevail in the former for eight months of the year, and especially that part of the year when the great ante-bellum cotton crop was moved to market, sailing ships never attempted to make the outward passage through the Yucatan Pass. Consequently, the commerce of the western ports, of New Orleans and Galveston, Apalachicola and Mobile, passed through the Florida Straits. Likewise, shipping from …

The third issue of Tequesta, The Journal of the Historical Association of Southern Florida, appeared while our last number was in press. The issue was edited by Dr. Charlton W. Tebeau of the University of Miami, with an advisory editorial board of Gaines R. Wilson, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Dr. Robert E. McNicoll, and Leonard R. Muller. While war conditions have reduced its size, the high quality of former numbers is maintained.

Pioneer Florida: Admission To Statehood, 1845, T. Frederick Davis
Pioneer Florida: Admission To Statehood, 1845, T. Frederick Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
Florida added the twenty-seventh star So the flag of the United States, Texas the twenty-eighth, and Iowa the twenty-ninth. By an act of Congress March 3, 1845, the territories of Florida and Iowa were authorized to enter the Union as states if and when they should meet the requirements for admission to statehood. The joint admission followed a policy designed to maintain a balance of power in Congress upon the serious questions of the times, mainly slavery, by admitting a Northern and a Southern territory together.
