As was to be expected there has been less activity among the local historical societies of the State during the war. But interest is being revived, though it likely will not equal that of prewar years until the war is ended.

The treaty of “Amity, Settlement and Limits” by which Spain ceded the Floridas (East and West) to the United States, was concluded and signed on February 22, 1819, but ratifications were not exchanged until February 22, 1821 - both transactions coincidentally being on the anniversary of George Washington’s birth. On March 10, 1821, General Andrew Jackson was appointed to take over the Floridas from Spain, and assume their government pending their formal creation as a territory of the Union. The commission bestowed upon him the title: Governor of the Floridas, exercising all the powers and authorities heretofore exercised by the …
The Last Spanish Census Of Pensacola, Duvon C. Corbitt
The Last Spanish Census Of Pensacola, Duvon C. Corbitt
Florida Historical Quarterly
Prior to 1812 the Spanish monarch did not see fit to grant Pensacola the right to organize as a municipality; consequently, the West Florida capital was governed up to that year by military commandants whose authority was untrammeled by elective officers. With the inauguration of the Constitution of 1812, however, it became necessary to allow the organization of municipal government there, since the charter in question provided such government for all towns and communities having one thousand or more free inhabitants, or whose special conditions necessitated local government. Therefore, Pensacola’s municipal government, consisting of an alcalde, or mayor, and a …

Florida's Population In 1845, Dorothy Dodd
Florida Historical Quarterly
The first census of the State of Florida was taken in the summer of 1845. The census takers were slow in making their returns, and data for only 17 of the 26 counties were submitted to the adjourned session of the General Assembly, which met in November. The census was actually taken, however, in every county except St. Lucia and Dade, a total of 66,381 inhabitants being reported.

Florida In 1845, Dorothy Dodd
Florida Historical Quarterly
When the government of the State of Florida was organized in June 1845, the state contained a population of some 66,500. Although Florida has a total area of 58,560 square miles, 2 47 percent of the population was concentrated in the 7,333 square miles (only 12.5 percent of the state total) lying between the Apalachicola and Suwannee rivers, then known as Middle Florida. The remaining 53 percent was distributed fairly evenly between West and East Florida, 25 percent being in the former and 28 percent in the latter. But since West Florida -between the Perdido and Apalachicola rivershas an area …

In the dense jungle growth of a hammock ten miles north of Ormond, are bare arches of coquina and great rectangular chimneys of another age towering above the live oaks and palmettos-all surrounded by the desolation of more than a century. This is what is left of Bulow Ville, one of the largest of the sixteen plantations, each working more than one hundred slaves, which were destroyed by the Indians early in 1835 in the section south and west of St. Augustine.

Pioneer Florida: The Pad-Guad At Pensacola, 1830, T. Frederick Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
Any well-rounded history of a country or of a section must include an account of the habits, customs and pastimes of its people in each generation. For Florida, not much has been told of these during our pioneer period from 1821, when it became a possession of the United States, to its admission to statehood in 1845. The human side of life in that period was recorded mostly in the minds of the old inhabitants, and when that generation passed the records were gone too. Every bit of authentic information relating to this period such as diaries and contemporaneous letters, …

Inaugural Address Of Governor Moseley, June 25, 1845, William Dunn Moseley
Florida Historical Quarterly
I should do injustice to the best feelings of my heart were I not, on this occasion, to express a becoming sense of gratitude for the enviable and honorable distinction, so recently conferred upon me, in elevating me to the supreme Executive authority of the State-a distinction the more highly prized from the flattering circumstances under which it was conferred. An expression of public sentiment through the suffrages of freemen, for an office within their gift, for which it was my earnest personal desire not to be a candidate.

A New Letter Of James Monroe On The Cession Of Florida, Rembert W. Patrick
Florida Historical Quarterly
In all the records of the negotiations at Madrid in 1805 between the Spanish government and the envoys of the United States there is not the least intimation that Spain was willing to cede the Floridas to this country. Yet, in a hitherto unpublished letter of June 22, 1812, Secretary of State James Monroe states that she was willing to; and Monroe himself with Charles Pinckney, United States Minister to Spain, were the two men who would know the facts.

History And Archeology In Florida, John W. Griffin
History And Archeology In Florida, John W. Griffin
Florida Historical Quarterly
There was a time when archaeology was conceived of as the collection of relics and history was thought of as the study of names and dates. The two disciplines seemed far apart. Yet history and archaeology are very closely related. Both are concerned with “history” in the broader sense. Both study and seek to interpret unique events placed in time and space. The major difference lies in the techniques used. History gains most of its information through written documents, archaeology for the most part deals with times and groups which have no written records of their own, and is forced …

Pioneer Florida: The First Railroads, T. Frederick Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
Practical operation of railroads in the United States began in 1827, when the Quincy (Mass.) Rail Road, three miles in length, started operation in April or May. This was followed immediately by the opening of a nine mile line at Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania. Soon afterwards preparations were made for the construction of several other lines of railroad, the longest and most important of which was the Baltimore and Ohio Railway. Much publicity was given the B & O, resulting in an increasing shift of transportation interest from canals to railroads generally. By the end of 1834, before Florida's first railroad …

The Flags Of The State Of Florida, Dorothy Dodd
Florida Historical Quarterly
The first flag of the State of Florida was flown for the first and, so far as is known, for the last time on June 25, 1845. The raising of the state and national banners, closing the ceremonies marking the inauguration of William D. Moseley as first governor of the State of Florida, on the east portico of the recently completed capitol, was accompanied by a twenty-eight-gun salute. The band then played "Yankee Doodle."

Luciano De Herrera, Spanish Spy In British St. Augustine, Katherine S. Lawson
Florida Historical Quarterly
When Governor Melchor Feliu closed the extensive and complicated operation of evacuating Spanish residents from St. Augustine on February 5, 1764, he reported that in order to provide for looking after certain properties of the king, and to dispose of many horses running in the woods, he had left seven soldiers and an interpreter there. One of these was a militiaman, Luciano de Herrera, whose family had long been resident in the colony.

Zephaniah Kingsley, Nonconformist (1765-1843), Philip S. May
Florida Historical Quarterly
After extensive travels and successful commercial operations in the British Isles, Africa, the West Indies, and North and South America, Zephaniah Kingsley, at the age of thirty-eight, brought to Florida in 1803 his unusual menage and here lived out the remaining forty years of an active, colorful life. During this period while Florida was first a Spanish colony and then a territory of the United States, he had a prominent part in its commercial and political affairs.

The Conservation Of Historic Sites In Florida, C. R. Vinten
Florida Historical Quarterly
In past years I have noted with great interest the concern expressed by members of the Florida Historical Society for the protection of the historical and archeological relics which still exist in Florida. In listing these accounts of strange archeological sites and of interesting historical areas, I have always asked myself the question, “What can be done to save the most valuable of these sites so that they will not have to share the fate of many which have been wantonly destroyed?” I believe we will all agree that these historical and archeological relics, which have been passed down to …
