Defying Boundaries: Mary Musgrove In Early Colonial Georgia, Courtland B. Nation Jan 2016

Defying Boundaries: Mary Musgrove In Early Colonial Georgia, Courtland B. Nation

The Corinthian

Often referred to as the ‘Pocahontas of Georgia,’ Mary Musgrove played a very prominent role in facilitating peaceful relationships between Native Americans and English settlers. And, much like Pocahontas, recent scholarship on Mary Musgrove has slowly been chipping away at the mask designated to her by popular memory. Historian Michael D. Green argues that Mary Musgrove’s life “represented a distinct vision for the future of the English in America.” This vision was one in which Native American and English identities could be combined, which Mary intended not only for herself, but also for English colonists and the Creeks. Mary’s vision …

La Nouvelle-Orléans : Une Ville Créole, Torrey Smith Jan 2016

La Nouvelle-Orléans : Une Ville Créole, Torrey Smith

Richard A. Harrison Symposium

Using the author’s experience this past summer living in New Orleans and working at l’Alliance Française de la Nouvelle-Orléans (a French cultural center in town) as a jumping-off point, this essay explores the birth and evolution of the city under French colonization. During her two-month stay, the author observed that l’Alliance seemed to attract mainly wealthier, white New Orleans residents; this limited interest seemed strange not only considering the incredible racial and socioeconomic diversity of the city, but also given that New Orleans’ French heritage seemed prevalent in the physical and cultural structure of the city.

To tackle the question …

Review Of Island Queens And Mission Wives: How Gender And Empire Remade Hawai‘I’S Pacific World, By Jennifer Thigpen, Margaret D. Jacobs Jan 2016

Review Of Island Queens And Mission Wives: How Gender And Empire Remade Hawai‘I’S Pacific World, By Jennifer Thigpen, Margaret D. Jacobs

Department of History: Faculty Publications

In Island Queens and Mission Wives, Jennifer Thigpen argues persuasively for the centrality of women and gender to the encounter between missionaries and Native Hawaiians in the nineteenth century. ... Thigpen offers new contributions to scholarship on missionary enterprises and colonialism by offering close readings of on-the-ground relationships between missionary and Hawaiian women. She successfully shows how women’s cross-cultural relationships within intimate settings became significant sites for the building of diplomatic and political alliances. ... Through its engagement with and extension of scholarship on gender and colonial encounters, Thigpen’s manuscript is a solid and engaging piece of historical scholarship.

The Military Career Of James Gettys, Melissa M. Gettys, Amanda A. Howlett Jan 2016

The Military Career Of James Gettys, Melissa M. Gettys, Amanda A. Howlett

Adams County History

James Gettys was a Federalist, tried and true. From his role in the American Revolution to his final position as Vice Brigadier General during the War of 1812, James understood the necessity for “we the people” to remain united as one, power in numbers. He lived that way, worked that way, and built his town on that premise. Like most of the frontiersmen of his time, his life was difficult, and his rise to the top was not always met with valor. Much like his father, Samuel, James Gettys fought for everything he had, and his attainments were well earned. …

Fighting Civil Rights And The Cold War: Confederate Monuments At Gettysburg, Jill Ogline Titus Jan 2016

Fighting Civil Rights And The Cold War: Confederate Monuments At Gettysburg, Jill Ogline Titus

Civil War Institute Faculty Publications

It's been interesting and instructive to see the ongoing debate over Confederate iconography unfold from the vantage point of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, one of the nation's premier centers of Civil War memory. Many of the conversations taking place in town are similar to ones happening around the country, but a few elements have been noteworthy. In Gettysburg, flag debates have by and large revolved around First Amendment rights, honoring ancestors and their cause, and the demands of heritage tourism, and not around civic identity or the appropriateness of the flag's use as a symbol of the state. A Birthday For The Upper Peninsula, Mark Ruge Jan 2016

A Birthday For The Upper Peninsula, Mark Ruge

Upper Country: A Journal of the Lake Superior Region

Everyone and everything should have its own birthday, particularly a special place like Michigan's Upper Peninsula, which does not. In this article, the author traces the political machinations of Michigan and the Upper Peninsula with a goal of finding the most appropriate birthday. He and the attendees at the Sonderegger Symposium XVI, sponsored by the Center for U.P. Studies, at Northern Michigan University, settle on December 14, 1836, the date when the final condition was met to establish the boundaries of Michigan as a state—boundaries that for the first time included the entirety of the Upper Peninsula as we know …
