In May 2008, PBSJ (now Atkins North America, Inc.), was contracted by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), to conduct archaeological impact evaluations and surveys for the Houston and Beaumont Districts under Contract 578-XX-SA004. This contract was for on-demand services, with specific work defined by individual work authorizations. However, all investigations were subsumed under a single Texas Antiquities Permit (No. 4925) for the contract, with Michael Nash serving as Principal Investigator during fieldwork. Four work authorizations were issued, but only three surveys were conducted due to a refusal of Right-of-Entry on one job. All fieldwork was conducted between October 2008 …

In July of 2016, Hicks & Company completed an archeological areal survey for the city of Coleman’s Proposed New Waterline Project located in Coleman County, Texas. The survey was completed for the city of Coleman under Texas Antiquities Permit #7704 with investigators surveying a total of 31 acres. The project will be funded through a Community Block Grant Program, as managed by the Texas Department of Agriculture, a political entity of the state of Texas, and is therefore subject to the Antiquities Code of Texas (ACT). On behalf of CPS Energy, SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) conducted cultural resources investigations of eight CPS Energy projects within Bexar County, Texas. The eight cultural resources investigations conducted under the annual permit include background records review and file searches, archaeological investigations such as surface reconnaissance and intensive cultural resources surveys and construction monitoring. The investigations were conducted to identify all historic or prehistoric cultural resources located within CPS Energy projects, establish vertical and horizontal site boundaries as appropriate within the project areas, and evaluate the significance and eligibility of all sites recorded for designation as a State Antiquities Landmark. On February 17, 2015, Hicks & Company conducted an intensive archeological survey of the proposed Johnson City’s (the City’s) New Skateboard Park location in Blanco County, Texas. The project will consist of a new concrete skate park that will be constructed on an approximately 0.66-acre area of potential effects (Figure 1). In addition to any necessary landclearing and leveling, proposed impacts will include the laying of about 93 square meters (1,000 square feet) of concrete, four pairs of 1-meter by 1.5-meter (3-foot by 5-foot) washer pits, and a native plant garden with a 30 centimeter (12-inch ) depth of impact. …

In the summer and fall of 2014 and spring of 2015, the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) conducted monitoring and testing at Mission San Francisco de la Espada. Archaeological investigations were conducted in the parking lot north of the chapel (Area 1) and west of the Priests’ Quarters/Convento (Area 2). Two other areas were investigated directly in front of the church (Area 3) and north of the parking lot in the mission plaza (Area 4). (Goshawk) conducted one cultural resources survey within the Eagle Ford Play, South Eagle Ford Zone, at the request of EOG Resources, Inc. (EOG). The project subjected to cultural resources investigation was the Cuellar Unit #11H Flowline. The Area of Potential Effect (APE) was a 75-foot (23-meter [m]) wide right-of-way (ROW), consisting of a 50-foot (15-m) wide permanent easement and a 25-foot (8-m) wide temporary construction easement. In December 2015, a pedestrian archeological survey was completed in order to inventory and evaluate any archeological resources on public and private land for 1.2 miles of proposed new-location roadway between Chandler Road and Northpark Boulevard in Taylor, Williamson County, Texas. The project is associated with the development of the East Williamson County Events Center (EWCEC), currently under construction near the south end of the project. The road will be owned and funded by Williamson County, rendering it subject to the Antiquities Code of Texas. No federal nexus is known.

Between February 2014 and October 2015, Atkins North America, Inc. (Atkins), conducted cultural resources investigations for the City of San Antonio’s (COSA’s) proposed Espada Road Widening Project. The project area extends from Southeast Interstate Loop 410 to approximately 137 meters (450 feet) west of the intersection of East Ashley Road and Espada Road, a distance of approximately 1.6 kilometers (1.0 mile), comprising 7.99 acres (3.2 hectares). The project area was subjected to an intensive pedestrian survey, which was supplemented by mechanical trenching. This thesis covers two critical months (April and May, 1862) during the Port Royal Experiment, which took place during the Civil War in the Sea Islands of South Carolina. This abolitionist-influenced experiment has been enriched by numerous primary sources from a range of people: military officials, General Superintendents of the Treasury, abolitionists and educators. However, this topic has been missing one important source: Special Treasury Agents. These men implemented the orders of various groups involved with the Experiment. This thesis covers the events of the Civil War in Cabell County, West Virginia, and how those events were remembered by the county’s residents in the decades after the war. It provides a brief look at the early development of the county and how its inhabitants sought to exploit the county’s topography in order to facilitate commercial investment in the region. Cabell Countians were deeply divided and several skirmishes between Union and Confederate forces produced a time of terror and hardship. According to the enclosed documents, at the age of eighteen, Joseph Sofka enlisted as a Merchant Marine in Pittsburgh after traveling there from his hometown of Wheeling. A frequently little known branch of the armed forces, Merchant Marines were responsible for ferrying cargo from the United States to the front lines in Europe and the Pacific, and were instrumental in maintaining supply lines to sustain the troops overseas. Merchant Marine ships had to avoid submarines, ships, and mines from the enemy, making a seemingly simple task into a deadly effort. As a result, the Merchant Marines had the highest casualty …

Nicholas Tillinghast (1804-1856) was the founding principal of the State Normal School at Bridgewater, Massachusetts. While his accomplishments as an educator and administrator are well-known, his earlier U.S. Army career is less-well documented. This article examines both Tillinghast’s experiences at West Point as a student and instructor and his career as an Army officer serving at Fort Gibson in the Indian Territory.

The Cleveland Jewish Society Books were published from 1915 to 1925 by the Jewish Independent Publishing Company, a locally owned publisher that published the weekly Jewish Independent. The books were similar in appearance to the Cleveland Blue Book, a guide for society’s elite. The listings in the Cleveland book listed individuals by country club. The Jewish books list individuals by congregations. In many cases there are separate lists of the congregations’ ladies auxiliary, along with information on social service agencies. The book also included advertisements.
