John Collier And Mexico In The Shaping Of U.S. Indian Policy: 1934–1945, Wilbert Terry Ahlstedt

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Relations between Mexico and the United States have often been tense and yet they have always been interrelated. In the nineteenth century Mexicans were viewed by their northern neighbors as degenerate racial hybrids. In terms of Native Americans and their relationship to land, Mexico was seen as an example of how not to conduct Indian policy. But during the 1930s, significant numbers of officials within the Roosevelt administration expressed interest in and admiration for Mexican domestic policy, especially in relation to Indian policy. One of the most enthusiastic proponents of Mexico’s federal Indian policy was U.S. Indian Commissioner John Collier. …

“Two Wars And The Long Twentieth Century:” A Response, Bryan G. Caswell, S. Marianne Johnson

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Drew Gilpin Faust, president of Harvard University and renowned historian of the American Civil War, authored an article in the New Yorker recently entitled “Two Wars and the Long Twentieth Century.” Taken primarily from her remarks in the Rede Lecture delivered at the University of Cambridge earlier in 2015, Faust’s article takes advantage of the proximity of the anniversaries of the First World War and the American Civil War to advocate for a dialogue of greater continuity between the two conflicts. The End Of The Small-Town Golden Age: A Rural Newspaper’S Role In The Urban-Rural Clash Of Anti-Catholicism, Christopher S. Saladin Apr 2015

The End Of The Small-Town Golden Age: A Rural Newspaper’S Role In The Urban-Rural Clash Of Anti-Catholicism, Christopher S. Saladin

History: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Anti-Catholicism is an often forgotten feature of our country’s past that was extremely widespread, especially across rural America. In this essay, I focus on an anti-Catholic newspaper, titled The Menace, which was published out of the small Midwestern town of Aurora, Missouri and enjoyed national success. I argue that anti-Catholic sentiments were largely tied to rural values and fears of urbanization, which were being fueled by a massive influx of Irish and Italian Catholic immigrants into the United States. Rural communities cried out against this “Catholic invasion” because they truly believed that urban immigrant populations were taking away their …

Interview With William "Bill" Southwick, Nancy Salto

Chicago 1968

Length: 50 minutes

Interview with William Southwick by Nancy Salto

Rev. Southwick begins by recalling the start of his activism work, running Northside Cooperative Ministry coffeehouse while serving as a minister. He explains how he first became involved in the anti-war protests through acquaintances in the Japanese-American community. He recalls the impact that both the DNC and Dr. King’s assassination had on Chicago and the effect it had on the more militant elements in the movement, like the Weather Underground. He compares the student protests in Chicago to other demonstrations and anti-war movements around the country. He describes the kind …

Maybe, Maybe Not: The Tao Of History, Kevin P. Lavery Apr 2015

Maybe, Maybe Not: The Tao Of History, Kevin P. Lavery

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

One day, a farmer’s only horse broke loose and ran away from his stable. “What bad luck,” the farmer’s neighbors said to him. But the farmer merely replied, “Maybe, maybe not.”... [excerpt]
