The lead .41-calibre bullet with which John Wilkes Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln on the night of April 14, 1865, was the most lethal gunshot in American history. Only five days earlier, the main field army of the Southern Confederacy had surrendered at Appomattox Court House, and the four dreary years of civil war were yielding to a spring of national rebirth. But by then, the man to whom everyone looked for guidance in reconstructing the nation was dead. [excerpt]

Philanthropy And The New England Emigrant Aid Company, 1854–1900, Courtney Elizabeth Buchkoski
Philanthropy And The New England Emigrant Aid Company, 1854–1900, Courtney Elizabeth Buchkoski
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This project examines the New England Emigrant Aid Company colonization of Kansas in 1854 as a solution to the growing debate over popular sovereignty and slave labor. It uses the Company as a lens to reinterpret the intellectual history of philanthropy, tracing its roots from Puritan ideas of charity to the capitalistic giving of the nineteenth century.
It argues that the Company’s vision was simultaneously capitalistic and moralistic, for it served both as an imposition of “proper” society upon the West and South, but also had the potential to benefit the donors financially and politically. Using a settler colonial framework, …

The Effect of Religious Opposition on the Mexican-American War, 1846-1848
By April Pickens, History Major
James Madison University
The Mexican-American War began in dubious circumstances, and some Americans disagreed with “Polk’s War” from the beginning. But it was the united efforts of three Protestant denominations—the Congregationalists, the Unitarians, and the Quakers—that finally turned a large segment of the populace against the war. They were able to do this with their multiplying publications, which wielded significant influence in the religiously aware society that existed in America after the Second Great Awakening. When sufficient numbers of ordinary citizens and politicians began voicing …

The American Allies: The Impact Of The Oneida Involvement In The American Revolution, Ashlen M. Clark
MAD-RUSH Undergraduate Research Conference
The American Revolution extended its grasp far past the white men who started it, forcing Natives across the colonies to become involved. Soon after the beginning of the Revolution the Iroquois Six Nations of New York were drawn into the conflict and forced to choose between the Americans, the British, or attempts at neutrality. After the war the Iroquois Six Nations emerged divided, broken, and severely less powerful than when they entered the strife. This paper examines the impact of the American Revolution on this Iroquoian division, specifically focusing on the Oneida Indian Tribe and the effects of their alliance …

Take On Appomattox, Brianna E. Kirk
The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
On April 9, 1865, Palm Sunday, Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant met in the front parlor of Wilmer McLean’s house in the little village of Appomattox Court House to discuss the status of their two armies. After swapping stories of the days of their Mexican War service, the two men finally penned their names on terms of surrender, effectively ending the American Civil War. Grant, magnanimous towards the now defeated Confederates, and Lee, humble in his loss, ushered in the era of reconciliation that would bandage up the past four bloody years and push the reunited country forward …
