Wool, next to cotton, is perhaps the most important of all textile fibers. Like most of their contemporaries, the Shakers of South Union, Kentucky, recognized the ease with which wool fibers were spun into yarn and the advantages of sturdy wool clothing. South Union’s textile industry grew from a simple carding mill to a full-fledged woolen factory with a 240-spindle spinning jack and 4 power looms. From its genesis in 1815 to its abrupt demised in 1868, the sect’s woolen industry provides a paradigm for the study of the United States’ textile industrialization.

Kentucky was the last state in the South to introduce racially segregated schools and one of the first to break down racial barriers in higher education. The passage of the infamous Day Law in 1904 forced Berea College to exclude 174 students because of their race. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s black faculty remained unable to attend in-state graduate and professional schools. Like black Americans everywhere who fought overseas during World War II, Kentucky's blacks were increasingly dissatisfied with their second-class educational opportunities. In 1948, they financed litigation to end segregation, and the following year Lyman Johnson sued the University …

Adams County History

In the aftermath of the anniversary celebrations held to commemorate women's right to vote, it is fitting to remember an Adams county resident who figured prominently in the most militant phase of the suffrage campaign-Lavinia Lloyd Dock.

Lavinia Dock was born February 26, 1858, the second child of Gilliard and Lavinia Lloyd Bombaugh Dock. Gilliard, who had attended Gettysburg College, was a well-to-do engineer and machinist. Both parents were liberal in their views. Lavinia said that "Father had some whimsical masculine prejudices, but Mother was broad on all subjects and very tolerant and charitable towards persons." The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. The Association is made up of 9th Infantry veterans from WWII and Vietnam, spouses, widows and lineal descendants.

The Ensign Family Papers (1804-1945) consist mostly of letters generated by Eli (1860's-1890's) or letters to him. The majority of letters written by Eli are to his wife (1870-1899) when he is on various trips or when she is visiting family in Connecticut.

Letters to Ely are mostly from his side of the family such as brothers Sidney (1859-1874) and Charles (1862-1871) or Ely’s grandmother Clarinda(?) Prentice (1857-1868). Business correspondence (1867-1902) is heaviest during the 1870's. One common writer of business correspondence to Ely was W.A. Burke (1870).

This collection includes ten cassette tapes with the interviews and ten folders of transcripts for each interview.

Other later additions to the collection, in significantly smaller amounts, include Huntington East High School memorabilia belonging to Richard S. Mobayed, unidentified group photographs, a photo of the Owens-Illinois Glass Company Plant, a limited amount of correspondence from Louis’ daughter Carole Eddins and son Richard S. Mobayed, programs from Louis’ Huntington High School reunions, and a diploma for Louella Hatfield from 1927.

Prostitutes And Prostitution: A Case Study Of “Disorderly Women” In Hamilton, Ontario, 1879-1886, Shelly Marie Blom

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This cognate essay examines prostitutes and prostitution in Hamilton from 1879 to 1886. It contends that the women who were arrested for prostitution offenses in Hamilton in that period were involved in the trade as a result of a number of factors working in concert. These factors included ethnicity, occupation, age, marital status, addiction and contemporary social structures and mores. In particular, women of Irish background and/or those who had worked as domestic servants appeared to be especially vulnerable to the streets. Once charged as prostitutes, these women faced further difficulty in being regarded as anything but “fallen” and deviant, …

Literature Based Social Studies Versus Textbook Based Social Studies, Kathrine Jean Kellogg

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of literature based social studies versus textbook based social studies in mastery of information. Using a pre-test and a post-test, control group, experimental design, and a t-test for non-independent variables, it was found that the experimental group achieved higher test scores than the control group. Results of the t-test yield a t-value of 3.00 with 18 degrees of freedom with a .05 level of significance. This shows that the results are 95% certain that the differences between the two groups' performances on the post test are due to the variation …
