When western York county became Adams county in the year 1800, the area already possessed something of a recorded history reaching back into the late 1730s. Principally in the form of documents relating to administrative, legal, and land-claim issues, these official papers provide us today with valuable evidence of the county's early settlers-who came, when they arrived, where they settled, and occasionally how they got along, or did not get along, with one another and with the colonial Penn government, and later with that of the new state erected during the Revolution. Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This essay explores the designing of the Thames embankments that were built between 1866 and 1874 for the Metropolitan Board of Works. In particular it concentrates on the origins of what might be called the production of the conditions of production of the embankments. By looking at the motivation of those advocating embanking as a means of exerting literal and figurative control over the river, and the ways in which society influenced such advocacy and determined its effectiveness, the essay explores modernity's construction of a regulated natural in the context of an analysis that is sensitive to the …

Mexicans and Mexican Americans in Nebraska commemorate Holy Week with a popular display of religious fervor. In semblance with the old religious traditions in Mexico, the Mexicanos, old and new residents, parade through the Omaha streets following the Way of the Cross on Good Friday. Processions, rituals, and plays are not only a yearly Catholic ritual in the streets of Omaha but an essential part of Mexican American and Latino cultural identity. Palm Sunday and the Way of the Cross are but a few of the constituent elements of the growing manifestations of Latino popular culture in the state. The …

The records of the Huntington League of the Association of Junior Leagues International consist of newsletters, yearbooks, annual reports, program materials and other published materials, scrapbooks, and production books from the Junior Leagues's programs. The focus of the collection primarily covers the League's publications and papers from their programs and activities. The inclusive dates range from 1929 to 1997, however, most materials are from the 1950s through the 1970s. The Huntington League's children's theater papers begin ca. 1929 (Series IV), and the cookbook can be found in the publication "League Lines".

The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. The Association is made up of 9th Infantry veterans from WWII and Vietnam, spouses, widows and lineal descendants.

Guides to Manuscript Collections

This collection is composed of three scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings about various events in Huntington, concert programs, photographs (mostly unidentified and of family), such ephemera as ticket stubs, postcards, and greeting cards, and monthly reports of his work at the post office. Topics covered in the clippings and ephemera include trains, Huntington history, images of women, and local news and obituaries. Most significant about the collection is the unique assortment and number of items present, capturing a snapshot of life in early to mid-twentieth century Huntington, West Virginia and America.

This study examines the evolution, function and role of London, Ontario's Western Fair Association. Spokespersons for the Western Fair proudly remind their listeners that the Fair is as old as Canada. During the period, 1867 to 1947, the Association grew from a one-event agricultural society into a sophisticated, multi-dimensional corporate entity with local, regional and international influence and significance.

Analysis of the Association's rise to prominence illustrates the Canadian public's changing relationship with modem technology. Initially, the Directors and promoters of the Western Fair incorporated the voice and authority of technological knowledge and advancement into the exhibitions, displays and competitions. …

MA Thesis: As a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the United States’ war with Mexico (1846-48), the inhabitants living in the territory occupied by the United States (northern half of the Mexican Republic) were left to make hard decisions as to their national identity and loyalties. Those citizens residing in the territory known today as the Southwestern United States were provided by the Republic of Mexico the opportunity to emigrate to Mexican soil in order to retain their Mexican citizenship. The Soviet Gulag and the Holocaust are two formative events that claimed millions of victims in the twentieth century; however, the Gulag has received markedly less interest from scholars. Why does such a major discrepancy exist in the amount of attention that is focused on the Gulag as compared to the Holocaust? This paper offers a response to the above question. It explores the scale and dimensions of the discrepancy through a comparative analysis of a Gulag bibliography and a Holocaust bibliography.
