In 1995, the editors of Historic Preservation bestowed their Great American Main Street Awards upon Pasadena, California; Clarksville, Missouri; Dubuque, Iowa; Franklin, Tennessee; and Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin. The awards recognized the collective achievements of local governments, citizenry, and historic preservationists who “tapped into community pride and energy and built upon--not over--the inherent value of their community’s historic character.” It is no surprise that Pasadena represents California on this list, as the city has eighty-four separate listings on the National Register of Historic Places as of November 2001. This collection consists of typewritten transcriptions of letters sent from David Caldwell between 1818 and 1853, an Episcopal clergyman, to members of his family. They discuss personal and family matters. Letters were sent from Bennington, Vermont, Georgetown, Washington, DC, and Amherst County, Virginia. These copies were found in “History of Joseph Caldwell and his descendants…” published in 1926 in Newburyport, Mass.

This collection is principally composed of a diary written by Robert A. Grant while he was a student at Marshall between 1933 and 1938. The diary covers Grant’s life as a student and his work in the Anderson-Newcomb department store. Additional materials include copies of the Parthenon published after the 1970 Marshall plane crash, a copy of the Greenline with Grant’s name in it as a donor, two algebra textbooks from 1903 and 1904, and newspaper clippings about an October 1970 riot in Huntington.

This collection is principally composed of letters exchanged between Carrie Irby and Lillie Way, but also includes letters to and from Russell Way and Alfred Irby while Alfred and Lillie were away selling lingerie and other garments in various towns throughout southern West Virginia. Issues discussed in the letters include money, exemplified through Carrie working and being subsequently told to quit to be a good mother and Alfred having money issues, romance, such as the affairs of Carrie’s sister Lillie, and relationship issues such as Lillie traveling for work away from her children and her husband being put into a …

The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. The Association is made up of 9th Infantry veterans from WWII and Vietnam, spouses, widows and lineal descendants.

This thesis studies the development of the Portland, Oregon Chinese immigrant community between 1850 and 1910. Chinese immigrants first arrived in Portland in the mid-1850s and quickly created businesses as well as social institutions they transplanted from China to the U.S. West. They also established intricate relationships among themselves and with members of the surrounding white community. County and state court records held at the Multnomah County Courthouse and National Archives in Seattle, Washington, reveal much about the Chinese immigrant community in Portland and provide a window into a society that left few written records. This study examines the early work of famous novelist Halide Edip Adıvar against the background of public discussions on women and gender in late-Ottoman society. Gender relations and women's issues constituted a fertile ground for the debate about social transformation. Edip and her feminist peers wrote about passionate love, companionship in marriage, the significance of motherhood, and women's legal rights in their works. This reflects women's vision of new gender relations and provides evidence for their contributions to the forging of Turkish modernity prior to the founding of the Turkish Republic. Elsie Strawn was born in 1789 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. She married Joseph Armstrong in 1811 and moved to Licking County, Ohio, where she bore nine sons. In 1831, leaving Joseph behind in Ohio, she relocated to the Illinois frontier with seven of her sons. She remained there until her death in 1871. Throughout her life, Elsie wrote poetry, much of which was about her life on the two frontiers of Ohio and 11linois. Her grandson Marshall Armstrong collected these poems to preserve them for her family, and the manuscript is housed in the Illinois State Historical Library. Family members …
