HCAC Research

English-born Francis Asbury (1745-1816), famed bishop of the American Methodist movement, visited the area that is now known as Horry County, South Carolina several times during the period 1785 to 1815. Asbury spread Methodism in America as part of the Second Great Awakening. In his journal and letters he left us several interesting accounts of the area and its residents. Annotations have been added in order to clarify his remarks.

The lrish-Catholic working-class of Scranton, Pennsylvania used social networks fanned in Irish nationalist organizations to expand the men's labor movement between 1879 and 1883. Formed in 1879, the Irish National Land League worked for land reform in Ireland and called on Irish-Americans to serve as fund-raisers for the cause. The Land League prospered in the Scranton area drawing into its ranks many Iiish-Americans that worked in the anthracite coal mines. The Knights of Labor, lend by Scranton native Terence V. Powderly, had established multiple local assemblies in the region, but had a difficult time recruiting hi sh-Catholic members. Leaders of …

This thesis tracks the development of Vera House Inc., a sheltering domestic violence agency inSyracuse,New York, from its conception in 1973 to its opening in 1977 to its programmatic development 1980's-present. The introduction provides the historical context of Vera House's opening with an overview of the Battered Women's Movement and its formation in the 1970's. The body of the thesis is broken into two sections: Planting Seeds and Expanding Roots. The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. The Association is made up of 9th Infantry veterans from WWII and Vietnam, spouses, widows and lineal descendants.
