Guides to Manuscript Collections

The majority of this collection consists of the handwritten and typed poetry of Martha Carpenter Miller. Many of the poems underwent multiple edits and rewrites, and her notes and corrections to her poems are included in this collection. The collection spans the years 1898-1962, with the bulk of the material from the 1930s-1950s. Miller wrote extensively, and the collection includes poems and partial poems, ideas, and short verses written on scrap paper, envelopes, paper towels, carboard, postcards, and various other types of paper. Manuscript Collection

The John Gary Anderson Papers consist of biographical sketches of J.G. Anderson and Alice Holler Anderson (wife of J.G. Anderson), newspaper clippings offering accounts of the success and failures of the Rock Hill Buggy Company, the Anderson Motor Company and “the Rock Hill Plan” for reduction of the cotton crop in the south. Also included is a map of Rock Hill dated 1891 and scrapbooks containing advertising materials for Anderson’s products, photographs, and correspondence relating to Anderson’s business, his will and years as a trustee of Winthrop College (1920-1937).

The Colonelette

On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. Their newsletter, “The Colonelette,” was started in June 1964. Also included …

The Gospel Reaching Out newsletter was produced by the Hart County Gospel Music Association which was headquartered in Munfordville, Kentucky. The newsletter contained information and calendars related to “singings” and singing conventions in south central Kentucky, area singing groups, musical trends, and features about collectors, churches and enthusiasts as well as advertisements from sponsors. Library Special Collections does not own originals or copies of this title.
