The Octofoil, January/February 1980, Ninth Infantry Division Association

The Octofoil

The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. The Association is made up of 9th Infantry veterans from WWII and Vietnam, spouses, widows and lineal descendants.

This collection consists primarily of newspaper clippings related to Marshall College and Huntington High School events in 1927-1928, but also includes several calling cards/graduation cards, a Christmas note, an invitation to a Harlequin Club semi-formal dance, and three photographs, one of a marching band and two others of a woman holding flowers at a sporting event.

This collection consists primarily of newspaper clippings about Robert Lloyd Beck and his wife Ruth Myers Beck while they were living in Huntington, West Virginia. Newspaper clippings about Robert relate to his work as a philosophy professor while newspaper clippings about Ruth primarily relate to her work in the Faculty Wives Club. Also present in the collection is a 1939 commencement program, a program for a 1965 Marshall University Theatre production of A Streetcar Named Desire, and a November 10, 1950 letter to Robert Beck from fellow professor James B. Included are scanned newspaper clippings, photographs, ephemera, and a note regarding Ball descendants’ eligibility for DAR and SAR.

This is an artificial collection of materials purchased or found by James Jeffrey behind a wall panel in a Huntington, WV apartment. The series of letters was found behind said wall panel and the financial ledger was purchased from Lilley’s Bookshop in Parkersburg, WV.

The letters are broken down as follows:

“Ima Turdlet (?)” to “The Right Hon. Mr. E. C. Hatfield Esq”, undated. This is a scathing seven-page letter regarding the breakup or divorce of the writer’s relationship with Hatfield.

0318: Henry B. Morgan Letters, 1891-1892, Marshall University Special Collections

This collection contains copies of two letters written by Morgan possibly to his cousin Lydia in 1891 and 1892 related to family matters, including daily life, farming, and marriage. Also included is the envelope for the 1892 letter addressed to James J. Casey of Huntington, WV. Other materials in the collection are copies of Ivory Soap advertisements, possibly an envelope that contained the letters. Given that these materials are copies, legibility varies.

Carolina Low Country Girl Scout Council Records - Accession 325, Girl Scouts, Carolina Low Country

Manuscript Collection

This collection is a valuable source of girl scouting records in South Carolina during the twentieth century. While the Carolina Low Country Girl Scouts (CLCGS) was chartered in 1924, the records begin earlier with the organization of the CLCGS and continue until the late 1970s. The collection consists of organizational records, financial records, troop registrations and membership lists, news releases, Juliette Low Region VI records, newsletters, and records relating to camps and annual conventions. Other records include program activities, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, photographs, slides, and memorabilia.These records give a good overview of the CLCGS’ history. They also provide a good …
