The Vanguard

Susan Ruehle and Charles Ruehle were named directors of the Lutheran Human Relations Association of America (LHRAA) by the Association's board of directors at the board's special meeting, December 13, in Philadelphia.

Susan and Charles Ruehle were elected to the Association's top professional staff position after interviews with three candidates from among the almost 40 persons who applied for the job.

The Gospel Reaching Out newsletter was produced by the Hart County Gospel Music Association which was headquartered in Munfordville, Kentucky. The newsletter contained information and calendars related to “singings” and singing conventions in south central Kentucky, area singing groups, musical trends, and features about collectors, churches and enthusiasts as well as advertisements from sponsors. Library Special Collections does not own originals or copies of this title.

The Colonelette

On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. This one-page typed document, circa 1980, is a petition to the South Dakota State Supreme Court for Dick Marshall to receive a new trial. Dick Marshall, an Oglala Lakotah, was imprisoned on a charge of first-degree murder, but later a witness retracted her original testimony, stating she was pressured to accuse Marshall by the FBI. This petition proclaims the innocence of Marshall and demands a retrial.
