Adapting The One-Minute Paper For Active Learning, Richard Holtzman

This paper suggests a simple exercise that facilitates active learning by embedding regular opportunities for student participation within the structure of an undergraduate course. This exercise involves the use of in-class participation assignments, which are adaptations of a popular classroom assessment technique, the one-minute paper. While likewise serving as an assessment tool, the suggested exercise is also able to address an additional range of instructional challenges, such as stimulating critical thinking, facilitating engagement with course materials, encouraging participation, and motivating preparation.

Hmong Oral History Project

Paul White, Carol Mills, and Tom Ward were all USAID staff in Laos during the Secret War, and all worked closely with Edgar “Pop” Buell. In this interview each of them shares the details of how they came to work in Laos, what responsibilities they had, and their impression of Buell. They describe their own responsibilities, the various aspects of the USAID program (education, health, refugee services), different individuals involved in the operation, and the program’s eventual evacuation from Sam Thong and relocation to Ban Xoun.

From the document: The original design of this project was as an oral history. Indeed, in my proposal I stated that “Native Americans who retain the stories, recollections, and remembered traditions of their individual tribes and cultures are rapidly disappearing.” And while I thought I might discover existing memories or stories about the region, it was clear from the beginning that recollections specific to locales within the Park and surrounding area did not exist. The collection consists of recordings and transcripts of oral history interviews conducted by Dr. George A. Rogers and Susan Moody in 1997 and 1998. Those interviewed were Mrs. Lee Anderson, Dr. Charlton Moseley and Mrs. Willie Lee Moseley, James Rigdon, and Mary Lee Jones Tucker. Interviewees remembered Daniel Edgar Bland and his wife Catherine as well as their farm, Magnolia Springs. Mr. and Mrs Bland both attended First District Agricultural and Mechanical School. The land on which their farm thrived is now part of the University, and the homestead itself is now the University Botanical Gardens.

This collection consists of the transcripts, original cassette tape recordings of public speeches, lectures, and oral history interviews spanning from 1962-2007. Interviews were conducted and recorded by Georgia Southern University’s Department of History and Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections. Those interviewed are mostly locals to Bulloch County and neighboring counties. Interviewees discuss their personal and family lives, historical events they were a part of, and circumstances surrounding their successes. The public speeches and lectures originated from an assortment of sources.

Born in Long Tieng, Laos in 1966, Lee Pao Xiong lived with his father, who had already been recruited into the Hmong army at age 12. His mother and grandparents lived nearby. After the fall of Long Tieng in May 1975, Xiong and his family spent more than a year in Thai refugee camps before migrating to the United States in 1976. Settling first in Indiana, his family moved to the Twin Cities in 1979. Xiong earned a B.S. in Political Science from the University of Minnesota, an M.A. from Hamline University, and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. He has …
