Oral Histories

George was born and raised on the Sioux reservation, which is located in Sioux Valley Manitoba, Canada. He says that he is proud to be a full blooded American Indian. As a child he attended a mixed-race school near the reservation, where he learned to deal with issues of racism for the first time.

Rhoda Stertzer, Noel Weeks

Rhoda M. Stertzer was born in a small village as part of the Athabaskan tribe in Alaska. She dropped out of school in tenth grade to get married and moved to Ohio for economic/survival reasons in 1980.

Ryan is the Project Director for the Circles of Care grant at the Native American Indian Center of Central Ohio (NAICCO). He lives in Columbus with his wife, Masami, who runs NAICCO, and their three children: Afton, David, and Toshina. Both Tyrone and Masami grew up on a reservation in Warm Springs, Oregon. Tyrone lived on the reservation until his mid-twenties, when he, his wife, and their oldest daughter relocated to Columbus, Ohio. Bartholomew Kuma, Kushal Rao

Bartholomew Kuma is a Cherokee male of about 60 years old. He grew up in the Columbus area, and has lived there a majority of his life. He has vocational training in automotive repair. Mr. Kuma’s professes no religious affiliation to any specific denomination, but believes in a Great Creator and tries his best to follow the Indian ways. He has frequented NAICCO for many years now, and has a special place in his heart for powwows.

I interviewed Stephen, a board member on several projects related to NAICCO and a member of the Minnecoujou tribe in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Stephen now lives in central Ohio but was raised in South Dakota on an Indian Reservation and was sent to St. Joseph’s Indian School from the ages of eight to fifteen. He earned his GED after leaving St. Joseph’s Indian School after failing the ninth grade. Dr. MayKao Hang is president and CEO of the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation. Born in war-torn Laos, Hang’s family escaped to Thailand and eventually settled in the Twin Cities in 1976, when only a small number of Hmong families had yet arrived. Dr. Hang reviews her life story, focusing on her family’s history and adjustment to life in Minnesota, her education, and memories of various issues in the Hmong community related to resettlement, including clan and gender issues, community leadership, generational conflict, and changing understandings and definitions of Hmong identity. Sam Standing Soldier is 18 years old and has 5 brothers. He currently lives in Salem, Ohio with his dad and attends high school there. A radio dramatization of Olga Kolberg’s life presents her educational efforts in El Paso. Mrs. Kohlberg describes the concept of kindergarten, and the importance of education in very young children. A narrator details Mrs. Kohlberg’s efforts to raise money and establish a kindergarten in El Paso. El Paso’s school system had the first kindergarten in the state of Texas thanks to the work of Mrs. Kohlberg and the other women. In his February 10, 2012 interview with Robert Ryals, Leonard Hewell “Kip” Carter details growing up in the South during segregation and the Civil Rights Movement, as well as his life as political aide/campaign treasurer to Newt Gingrich. Included are details of his college education at UNC-Chapel Hill – classes, professor, and the Red Scare. Carter shares the history of his friendship and working relationship with Newt Gingrich, the scandals Gingrich faced, and the ultimate end of their relationship. The United in Anger Study Guide facilitates classroom and activist engagement with Jim Hubbard’s 2012 documentary, United in Anger: A History of ACT UP. The Study Guide contains discussion sections, projects and exercises, and resources for further research about the activism of the New York chapter of ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power). The best way gain a handle on the vast amount of information within oral histories is to develop standards for collecting and organizing this information that institutions of all kinds and sizes can easily adapt. This report presents an idea for such a solution: a metadata scheme for oral histories with the working title Oral History Core.

This Senior Independent Study examines the South Vietnamese civilian experience during the Vietnam War through an oral history approach. Using interviews conducted with six South Vietnamese men and women, this thesis investigates how individuals constructed and defined a sense of normality during the war and formed an identity dedicated to survival.
