Seeds Of Missiology In The German Erweckung (1815–1848), Wayne A. Detzler
Seeds Of Missiology In The German Erweckung (1815–1848), Wayne A. Detzler
History Faculty Publications
It is my contention that seeds of a primitive missiology emerged early in the nineteenth century in Germany. This was necessitated by the vitality of the religious awakening known as the Erweckung. At first this missionary impulse was sporadic, ecumenical and individualistic. Johannes Aargaard regarded the ecumenical period of missions on the continent of Europe as lasting from 1800 to 1830 and the period following that as characterized by confessional missionary activity. By the same token he considered the emphasis of continental missions in the early years (1800–1820) to be that of training for missions. After 1820 the emphasis shifted …

Preparations For The Forbes Expedition, 1758, In Adams County, With Particular Focus On The Reverend Thomas Barton, James P. Myers
Adams County History
In the year 1755, two events occurred which left their impress upon the history of what was to become Adams county. One was momentous, and its consequences, like concentric ripples produced by a stone hurled into a large body of water, continued to move and shape the history of Pennsylvania's frontier long afterwards. By comparison, the other was insignificant, the mere, almost undetectable slipping of a pebble into the rushing torrent of Time. Yet this second happening eventuated in ways that profoundly contributed to our understanding of Adams county's, and Pennsylvania's, history during the years 1755-59.
The lesser of these …

A Study Of Two Attempts By President Plutarco ElíAs Calles To Establish A National Church In Mexico, Roger David Gouran
A Study Of Two Attempts By President Plutarco ElíAs Calles To Establish A National Church In Mexico, Roger David Gouran
Dissertations and Theses
In the one-hundred years between 1810 and 1926 there were many civil wars in Mexico. The last of these wars. La Cristiada, was not fought, as were the previous civil wars, by groups seeking political control of Mexico. Rather, the genesis of this war was a question of who would control the Church in Mexico. The war began when President Plutarco Elias Calles attempted to enforce rigorously certain articles of the Constitution of 1917 as well as two laws which he promulgated. If Calles had succeeded, he would, in fact, have created a church in Mexico controlled by the federal …

Principal Figures, Activity Issues And Doctrines That Shaped Medieval Church Supremacy, Wayne Hallett
Principal Figures, Activity Issues And Doctrines That Shaped Medieval Church Supremacy, Wayne Hallett
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This paper will explore the principal figures, activities, issues and doctrines that shaped the ascent of the Medieval Church, with emphasis on the period from 1000 to 1300 A.D. Some of the important ground did begin earlier though, and influential concepts were carried forward from the Gospels, the early Church fathers, and writers such as St. Augustine. Monasticism, art, and pilgrimage and the veneration of relics and saints played important roles in promoting the goals of the Church and the molding of the Medieval mind. Some of the important papal bulls. decrees, and canons of the Church councils reflect characteristics …

The Reshaping Of A Tradition: American Benedictine Women, 1852-1881, Ephrem (Rita) Hollermann Osb
Saint Benedict’s Monastery Books
"The primary focus of this book is on the women and the way of life from 1852-1881. In researching this segment of time, the chief aims were 1) to identify the early foundresses of Benedictinism in North America, 2) to describe as far as possible the experiences and role of these women in the early spread of the Order in the United States, and 3) to discover some of the continuities and discontinuities between their life in America and in Europe. The results of this research yielded deeper insight into the nineteenth-century founding experience of American Benedictine women." [from the …

Mormon Opposition Literature: A Historiographical Critique And Case Study, 1844-57, William P. Connors
Mormon Opposition Literature: A Historiographical Critique And Case Study, 1844-57, William P. Connors
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is in three parts. The first part looks at the historical scholarship on writings opposed to Mormonism, especially those from the nineteenth century. The conclusion is that, despite hundreds of works written against Mormonism in its early years, the historical scholarship has not done justice to the writings or people involved. The vast majority of the writings and writers have not been analyzed, and those that are discussed are usually the most sensational and not representative of the genre.
The second part of this thesis is a a case study giving an example of the kind of work …

The Elite And Popular Foundations Of German Catholicism In The Age Of Confessionalism: The Reichskirche., Marc R. Forster
The Elite And Popular Foundations Of German Catholicism In The Age Of Confessionalism: The Reichskirche., Marc R. Forster
History Faculty Publications
The political, institutional, and religious particularism of the German church reinforced the loyalty of the population, to local religious traditions. This gave German Catholicism a local emphasis and hindered the imposition of reformed Catholicism, which sought to homogenize, centralize, and internationalize the church. While early modern German Catholicism was certainly conservative, it was not rigidly traditional. Religious change occurred in these centuries and it came out of the interaction between the local population, local institutions like the chapters and monasteries, the parish clergy, and reforming churchmen.[70] The role of chapters and monasteries was not insignificant in this process.
