Dangerous Obscurity: A Study Of The Female Suicide Combatants Of Sri Lanka, Jessica Santala

Political Science Theses and Capstones

Since 1991 the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have used female suicide operatives in their civil war with the Sri Lankan government. Gaps in research about these phenomena suggest that it’s not seen as a gender specific problem and that female suicide bombers can be compared toe to toe with their male counterparts. I contend that the situation surrounding female suicide terrorism is unique and that certain discernable socioeconomic indicators can explain the reasons behind why some women of Sri Lanka become more active in suicide terrorism. Leadership is a term that women strive to claim as their own. Whether in the halls of Congress, the corporate boardroom, or the privacy of the home, women’s leadership challenges traditional notions of the concept. Throughout the ages images of leadership feature men in uniform and men in positions of power, whether it be military, government, or market. The traditional view of leaders is imbued with male images of “heroes,” who issue orders, lead the troops—save the day. But leadership has another face. Male Same-Sex Relations In Modern China: Language, Media Representation, And Law, 1900–1949, Wenqing Kang

History Faculty Publications

The article discusses the tension in the Chinese indigenous terminology for male same-sex relations which was similar to Eve Sedgwich's description of the Western modern homosexual/heterosexual definition. It argues that the Western sexological concept of homosexuality was accepted in the early 20th century China and notes that its legal apparatus had no clear stipulations on sex between men. It indicates how writers during the first half of the 20th century were more concerned with the proper gender behavior and the image of the nation than sex itself.

Self-Advocacy Of Women In Sexualized Labor, 1880–1980s, Kim Marie Matthews

The purpose of this study is to centralize, into women's history, the marginalized historical voices of women activists working in sexualized labor (and/or those using sexualized economic strategies). This thesis situates the work of Josie Washburn, a former madam who turned self advocate in 1907, squarely within the Progressive Era debate on prostitution, By centralizing women's voices of sexualized lahor, it provides a means to track the long-term evolution of the intersections between women's sexualized labor choices, traditional labor choices, self-advocacy, popular media, and social/political movements on behalf of women. In this paper, I will explore the role of local peace activist and feminist, Florence Ledyard Kitchelt (1874-1961) in supporting social justice, equality, and world peace. In 1924 Kitchelt accepted a paid position with the Connecticut League of Nation’s Association (CLNA), and for nearly twenty years she served as secretary and director of the organization. Working through the CLNA she canvassed the state promoting peace education and to building support for the League of Nations and the World Court. In 1925 she traveled to Geneva to study the League of Nations and attended the Assembly. Between the wars she worked …

While undertaking an ethnography of a public square in Barcelona, I have been led to wonder about the figure of the flâneur and the difficulties of conceiving this figure in the feminine. Two theories about urban space are in conflict: one views public space as continuing the patriarchy of private space; the other sees public space as a site of freedom and self-development for women as well as men. This same tension is present in analyses of the figure of the flâneur, a figure often evoked when anthropologists work in urban contexts

Imagine the flâneuse in Ulaan Bataar, with its streets unnavigable for pedestrians, and its ever-shifting ger neighborhoods that abut onto crumbling Gulag architecture, not to mention its fierce resurrection of Genghis Khan whose portrait engraved into the overlooking hills declares the city’s imperious nomadic autonomy. This paper investigates the mobilization of the 21st-century flâneuse by the contrary material forces of nomadism and urbanism that confront and transform her as she stumbles, drifts and speeds through Mongolia's city and steppes. In the essay I will critically introduce and discuss some of my key “walking” performance artworks that emphasize the phenomenon of walking and talking in-between different countries, cultures and languages. More specifically, since my infamous walking away from Poland, while on a student trip in Florence, Italy in 1988, I have been trying to exercise my freedom of movement and speech while living in Italy, Canada, Germany, and currently, in the USA. The desire to make artworks that would express some of the walking ideas was very important to me.

In February, the streets are quiet. Buses are silent. Only eyes are revealed beneath hats and scarves, and yet I feel welcomed. I am bowed into and out of restaurants, stores, temples, galleries, and gardens. Within these orderly frames there are constant delights for the eye, ear, nose and palate. I am seduced and consumed by the sensual. By May, I have fallen into and out of love with every quarter of the city many times over. The forces and rhythms that affect my developing relationship with Kyoto are recorded by the almost daily entries of the Kyoto Blog.

In Site-seeing, I look to address the disciplinary structures surrounding photographic vision through a series of photographs in which I have removed the camera from its habitual proximity to the eye, allowing it greater corporeal liberty. Through this series of mobility-induced images, I seek to explore the visual experience of embodied interstitiality, of being at neither point A nor point B, but caught in motion between the two.

Stroller Flâneur, Katerie Gladdys

Pushing a baby stroller, I examine the minutiae of my suburban neighborhood, searching for patterns and narratives in the genealogies of architectural structures and topographies while simultaneously searching for items of interest for my son. My resulting observations collage both real and imagined systems into metaphors of community. The methodology informing this video is a gendered riff on the practice of the flâneur where the necessity of childcare becomes a platform for textualizing suburban space.

To Die A Noble Death: Blood Sacrifice And The Legacy Of The Easter Rising And The Battle Of The Somme In Northern Ireland History, Anne L. Reeder

History Honors Projects

In 1916, under the pressurized conditions of the Great War, two violent events transpired that altered the state of Anglo-Irish relations: the Easter Rising and the Battle of the Somme. These events were immediately transformed into examples of blood sacrifice for the two fundamentally opposed communities in Northern Ireland: Nationalists and Unionists. In 1969, Northern Ireland became embroiled in a civil war that lasted thirty years. The events of 1916 have been used to legitimize modern instances of violence. This paper argues, through the use of cultural texts, that such legitimization is the result of the creation of mythic histories.

This paper examines the life of Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797), the wife of the philosopher William Goodwin and mother of Mary Shelley author of Frankenstein, through the prism of the principles of conduct set out in A Vindication of the Rights of Woman that Mary Wollstonecraft wrote over the period 1790 to 1792. In particular the paper focuses on the role of reason, virtue, and knowledge developed in A Vindication in establishing principles of conduct and the extent to which Mary’s own conduct can be reconciled with the precepts she advocated.

Women In History - Abigail Adams: Life, Accomplishments, And Ideas, Sharon K. Kenan

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Abigail Adams's fame derives in large part from her marriage to the second President of the United States, John Adams (Freidel, 1989). However, she also had attributes of her own that made her an interesting and perennially famous woman in the history of the United States. One of her most enduring legacies is the volume of correspondence she wrote during lonely separations from her husband while he handled the nation's business and left her alone with four children. Firsthand accounts of the period leading up to, during, and following the American Revolution are available through those letters (Withey, 1981). Eventually …
