The Fench Writers In The Seventeenth Century: The Literary Works Of Corneille Converted And Stabilized The French Language, Bernard Raphael May 1932

The Fench Writers In The Seventeenth Century: The Literary Works Of Corneille Converted And Stabilized The French Language, Bernard Raphael

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1932, argues that the literary work of Pierre Corneille converted and stabilized the French language during the seventeenth century. It surveys the major literary institutions and figures shaping French letters during this period, including the Salon de Rambouillet and its role in refining literary taste, and the founding of the French Academy under Richelieu and its work compiling the French dictionary. Corneille's development of French classical tragedy is examined in detail, particularly through "Le Cid," with attention to his treatment of the …

The Secular Activities Of The German Episcopate 919-1024, Edgar Nathaniel Johnson Jan 1931

The Secular Activities Of The German Episcopate 919-1024, Edgar Nathaniel Johnson

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The appearance of the monarchical bishop in the early organization of the church is its most outstanding feature. His diocese so far supplants in importance the early Christian community, that in his own person he becomes almost synonymous with the church itself. In the respect paid him and in the affluence of his outward display he vies with the Roman provincial governor. The increasing patrimony of the church comes under his guiding hand, and with time he becomes the dominant administrator in those towns where Roman municipal administration was decadent. Every bishop to some extent nourished ambitions similar to those …

The Authenticity Of Benson's Historical Novels, Estelle T. Bell Jan 1931

The Authenticity Of Benson's Historical Novels, Estelle T. Bell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the historical accuracy of Robert Hugh Benson's historical novels "The King's Achievement," "Come Rack! Come Rope!," and "By What Authority," arguing that despite their fictional romantic elements, these novels authentically portray the historical relationship between the English and Catholic Churches during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. Bell opens by distinguishing the aims of the historian from those of the novelist, then situates Benson biographically as a convert from Anglicanism to Catholicism whose religious sensibility shaped his literary work.

Drawing on the "Lingard-Belloc History of England" as an authoritative historical source, the thesis traces the …

The Growth Of Royal Power In France Before The French Revolution, Mildred L. Martin May 1930

The Growth Of Royal Power In France Before The French Revolution, Mildred L. Martin

Bachelors’ Theses

Since history deals with the happenings and the events in the lives of the people, and the people make up a country, and the events in the lives of the people are the events in the life of a country, it is necessary to study the lives of the people or the individuals who play an important role in the events of a country in order to write the history of the country. Accordingly, we must consider the various individuals connected with the history of France and their contributions to forward the growth of royal power in France.

Feudalism Preserved England’S Traditions Which Eventually Placed Her In Foremost Rank In Civilized Nations, Bernice Giese

Bachelors’ Theses

In the following pages I am going to try to trace the advancement of England through feudalism which eventually placed her in foremost rank in civilized nations.

No solution, I believe, can be made of the problems presented by history ever be complete until the knowledge of man is better known, Possibly a good definition of the history of man would be as Dr. A. F. Pollard, Professor of English History in the University of London would state, ’’Change has been, and is, the breath of our existence and the condition of our growth.”

Gladstone And Ireland, Leona Reineck Jun 1928

Gladstone And Ireland, Leona Reineck

Bachelors’ Theses

On December 29, 1809 there was born in No. 62 Rodney Street, Liverpool a man who in later years was called by some Englishmen, a devil, and by others, an angel, depending on their political view points. William Ewart Gladstone was the third of six children, a descendent of an old Scottish family, the Gledstanes of Gledstanes. He was born at a critical moment in the fortunes of England and of Europe.

The Earl Of Beaconsfield And The Eastern Policy 1875-1878, With Special Emphasis On The Congress Of Berlin 1878, Henry Raymond Radosevich

Bachelors’ Theses

In the year 1875 a grave crisis occurred in the Turkish Empire. This crisis was but one of the many problems presented to European diplomats of the nineteenth century in solving international crises. This was the reoccurrence of spasmodic revolutionary movements peculiar to nineteen century Europe. The difficulties of the Turkish Empire came from within, hence internal. With the corruption of the Turkish Government came the challenging of certain European peoples of the Balkan Hegemony of the Sultan.

Law -- Rome's Greatest Gift To The World, Annette Marie Zink Jun 1928

Law -- Rome's Greatest Gift To The World, Annette Marie Zink

Bachelors’ Theses

It is now nearly two thousand years since the curtain fell upon the last act in the history of the Roman Republic. During these twenty centuries many other republics have flourished and passed away, while, in turn, new republics have arisen to take the place of the earlier ones; but no other fallen republic in the world during the whole course of history has attained to the same degree of importance, or has exerted the same influence on the history of the world, as did that of Rome. Any adequate discussion of Roman Law necessitates a clear conception of the …

A Social And Intellectual Interpretation Of European History From The Thirteenth Century Through The Age Of Napolean, Laurence Joseph Younce Jun 1928

A Social And Intellectual Interpretation Of European History From The Thirteenth Century Through The Age Of Napolean, Laurence Joseph Younce

Bachelors’ Theses

One of ·the most outstanding features of this century, called by Walsh "the greatest of centuries'', is the steady decline it exhibits of the power of the Holy Roman Empire. The causes for this decline were as numerous as inexorable: there was (1) a well-nigh insuperable combination of physical difficulties in the way of effective unity, (2) a disintegrating rise of differing national consciousnesses among the component parts of the Empire, (3) the anarchic tendencies of feudalism, (4) the influence of the contemporaneous Commercial Revolution through the rise of the city states, (5) the rise of the nation states of …

Emperor Worship Among The Romans, John Orth Riedl Jun 1927

Emperor Worship Among The Romans, John Orth Riedl

Bachelors’ Theses

Rome was always a cosmopolitan city. She as conceived through a mingling of peoples and was nurtured in her cradle of seven hills on the cream of the surrounding tribes. She speedily outgrew her infant world, and thriving on the food of other races, soon stretched her aged length across the Tiber Riverbed with arms extending east far inland and west for miles along the road to Ostia.

The Triple Entente, Richard J. Plucinski May 1927

The Triple Entente, Richard J. Plucinski

Bachelors’ Theses

There is a philosophical axiom which asserts, that all things must have their physical, adequate proportional cause. This wonderful world of ours with its wonderful beauty, with its physical laws, with its chemical properties has also its cause. Today's and yesterday's pseudo-scientists were striving to prove that this wonderful universe came into existence without a proportionate, physical and adequate cause, assuming that evolution or chance was its cause. They have met obstinate opposition, their theories were considered as imaginations and today they are covered with oblivion. And as all things have their causes in the physical world, so too in …

The Embassy Of Everaard Van Weede, Lord Of Dykvelt, To England In 1687, James Muilenburg Jan 1920

The Embassy Of Everaard Van Weede, Lord Of Dykvelt, To England In 1687, James Muilenburg

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The importance of the embassy of Everaard van Weede, Lord of Dykvelt, to England in 1687, has been variously estimated by the many historians of the Revolution of 1688. Bishop Burnet, who played an important role in all the counsels of William and acted as the spiritual minister to Mary, speaks intimately of the whole affair. He gives an account of the mission which purports to be as he had it from the envoy himself. In Burnet's opinion the embassy may from one point of view be looked upon as a failure, for its ostensible objects were not attained. But …
