Power Politics In The Baltic, Harold E. Barto, Reginald M. Shaw Jan 1940

Power Politics In The Baltic, Harold E. Barto, Reginald M. Shaw

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

A year ago the attention of the world was focused upon central Europe. Then for a brief moment Poland flashed, and today the Baltic Sea region is in the spotlight. After a lapse of some two centuries, this sudden re-appearance of the Baltic to assume a major role in European affairs calls for comment. Touching upon these Baltic waters are six small democracies (Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Esthonia, Liatvia, Lithuania) and two powerful totalitarian states ( Germany and Russia.) In view of recent and current developments, two questions arise : ( 1) will one or both of the totalitarian states control …

Backgrounds Of German-Polish Relations, Harold E. Barto Nov 1939

Backgrounds Of German-Polish Relations, Harold E. Barto

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

Poland's leading role in Europe's most recent crisis which has developed into the Second World War has given new emphasis to her position in world affairs. Due perhaps to the varied course of events that have attended Polish destinies for her 1000 years of history, press dispatches relative to her past are sometimes wholly inadequate and not infrequently confusing. It is with the hope of giving the average reader a fuller background of Polish affairs that this article has been written. The writer has endeavored to deal with the events briefly and as objectively as is humanly possible.

Report On The Visit Of Dr. Wentzel On June 6, 1939, Unknown Jun 1939

Report On The Visit Of Dr. Wentzel On June 6, 1939, Unknown

Dowsing Research

This report on a visit to Berlin by Dr. Wetzel notes progress in scientifically determining physical causes for the dowsing rod phenomenon and laments the rejection of dowsing by experts due to activities by "dilettantes and frauds", whose activities should be stopped through official measures.

Wetzel expressed a desire for the Association for Dowsing to come under the umbrella of the German Police with the protection of the Reichsführer-SS, possibly within the Ahnenerbe. He compares dowsing research to World Ice Theory research, both facing opposition from government and party officials which could discourage researchers.

Wetzel additionally mentions his support for …

Report Of The Sd Directed At Reichsführer Ss Heinrich Himmler, May 26, 1939, Sicherheitsdienst

Dowsing Research

This report from the SD responds to the petition by the Reich Association for Dowsing which defends dowsing and asks for measures to regulate dowsing and empower the association in its oversight capacities.

The SD response begins with a summary of the arguments made by the Reich Association for Dowsing which refers to dowsing successes and outlines obstacles in the form of hostility from the science community, lack of resources, and the detrimental effect of "wild dowsers" on the overall reputation of the practice.

The paper then explores the organization itself, noting that it is based on a system of …

International Armament As A Threat To World Peace, David Quabius May 1939

International Armament As A Threat To World Peace, David Quabius

Bachelors’ Theses

In this thesis I will try to prove that International Armaments are a threat to world peace. When· a nation prepares for war the men who manufacture guns and munitions do a great business. And when war breaks out they really make money. They are willing to sell arms to anybody that is willing to buy. Therefore, they often encourage war so as to sell their implements of destruction.

Letter From Heinrich Harmjanz To Wolfram Sievers, April 23, 1939, Heinrich Harmjanz Apr 1939

Letter From Heinrich Harmjanz To Wolfram Sievers, April 23, 1939, Heinrich Harmjanz

Miscellaneous Documents

Heinrich Harmjanz writes to Wolfram Sievers regarding concerns about Dr. Zastrau, after Zastrau's father-in-law Dr. Gernlein had attempted to intervene. He notes Zastrau's past as a Marxist and strong opponent of National Socialism who made disparaging comments about Nazis and Hitler. He mentions Zastrau's hunger for power and a mysterious disappearance from a previous position. Harmjanz refers to rumors that Zastrau was romantically involved with a Jew and states that this has not been denied. He concludes that while his knowledge of Zastrau was limited to the period of 1930-1933, such an individual would not be welcome in the Ahnenerbe.

Letter From Dr. Otto Huth To Wolfram Sievers, March 30, 1939, Otto Huth

Miscellaneous Documents

Otto Huth writes to Wolfram Sievers requesting an increase in salary. He begins by questioning the rule that all department heads possess the venia legendi, offering counterexamples. He then states as acting head of department he should receive the same salary as an appointed head of department. He describes his current work and the expenses needed for its completion, stating that an increase in salary is required. Moreover, he had been forced to spend time and energy on literary endeavors rather than his scientific Ahnenerbe pursuits. He ends by pointing out the recognition he had received for his methodology in …

Miscellaneous Documents

Heinrich Harmjanz writes an emphatic letter against a research grant for Dr. Misch Orend. He writes that Orend has ties with the Romanian political police and works against the German community in Romania, having been shunned by prominent Germans in Transylvania. Additionally, Harmjanz rejects Orend as a dilettante and a slacker and states that he only uses research grants for subsistence rather than conducting actual scientific work.
