The Compoti Of The Bursars Of Whalley Abbey, Lancashire, 1508-1536, James A. Brundage

History Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate the condition of early sixteenth-oentury monasticism in England as it appears from the evidence in the financial accounts of the bursars of Whalley Abbey. The Whalley Abbey compoti provide a particularly fruitful field of study since a rather considerable body of documents from this Cistercian monastery have been preserved and a large number of these documents have already been published.

The Social And Political Conflict In Prussia 1858-1864, Eugene N. Anderson Aug 1954

The Social And Political Conflict In Prussia 1858-1864, Eugene N. Anderson

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

T HE present study developed out of a desire to understand the character of liberalism and conservatism in Prussia on the eve of German unification. Who were the liberals? Who were the Conservatives? What were their ideals and how did they conduct themselves in public? How powerful was each group in the state? In conflict throughout the Nineteenth Century, the opponents reached the peak of their antagonism in the years between 1858 and 1866, the the years of the New Era, the constitutional conflict, and the first two wars of German unification. Fundamental social, economic, and political ideals were at …

British Land Policy And The American Revolution: A Belated Lecture In Economic History, George O. Virtue Sep 1953

British Land Policy And The American Revolution: A Belated Lecture In Economic History, George O. Virtue

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

If this were spoken from a pulpit instead of from a teacher's rostrum, I should be disposed to take as a text for what follows a passage from C. W. Alvord's study of The Mississippi Valley in British Politics. From the middle of the 18th century to the Revolution, how to deal with the great valley was, Alvord holds, the number one American problem of every British ministry: How to meet the claims of France to it and how to defend it once her claims were extinguished; how to meet the claims to it of the seaboard colonies by virtue …

Puritan Opinion In The House Of Commons, Jacquelyn Cheney Mar 1953

Puritan Opinion In The House Of Commons, Jacquelyn Cheney

Student Scholarship

The religious and political landscape of early seventeenth-century England was defined by the evolving friction between the Stuart monarchy and a growing Puritan faction within the House of Commons. While the English Reformation under the Tudors was primarily a political schism rather than a doctrinal one, it left a legacy of religious unsettledness that Elizabeth I managed through political expediency. By the time James I ascended the throne in 1603, the Puritan movement had transitioned from a purely religious group seeking to purify Anglican ritual into a sophisticated political force. This transformation was solidified through a strategic alliance with common …

A Study Of The Legend And Cult Of The Boy Martyr, Saint William Of Norwich, Helen B. Scrivner

History ETDs

For some years following the death of Saint William the cult flourished and many people came to the tomb of the boy saint to worship and seek miraculous help. It is the aim of this study to follow the diffusion of the story and its impression on those who it reached. We will plot the geographical range of the cult for the twenty-eight years covered by the chronicle. We will also consider other historical evidence of the story having reached localities not mentioned in the narrative. We will suggest ways that the information may have been carried. Besides following the …

Juan Luis Vives' Concept Of History, Anne M. Riley May 1950

Juan Luis Vives' Concept Of History, Anne M. Riley

History ETDs

Among those humanists of the sixteenth century whose literary output reflects an awareness of the need for clearly defined method in the writing of history is the Spanish-born scholar, Juan Luis Vives. Although he achieved his fame largely in the field of social reform, education, and psychology, Vives had much to say on the value and method of history. A good deal has been written on many aspects of Vives' thought, but virtually no attention has been given to his ideas on history. Only his most extensive biographer, Bonilla y San Martin, makes a serious effort to separate from the …

The Place Of English Party Politics As A Factor In The Causes Of The War Of Jenkins' Ear, 1739, Ruth Patty Rosenzweig May 1949

The Place Of English Party Politics As A Factor In The Causes Of The War Of Jenkins' Ear, 1739, Ruth Patty Rosenzweig

History ETDs

That curiously titled incident, "The War of Jenkins' Ear," has received varied treatment by historians. It has been a challenge to the justifiers of English imperialism, and it has attracted those interested in early colonial policies and lovers of the piquant. The earliest historians interested in the war were preoccupied with Jenkins and the ear itself. Later historians stressed the international causes of the war--the colonial commercial and territorial dissension between England and Spain--the two protagonists in the war. While these international antagonisms were the underlying causes of the war, they were not precipitating factors. Study of the sources shows …

A Historical Study Of The Port Of Hull During The Thirteenth Century, Floyd Winfield Snyder Jun 1948

A Historical Study Of The Port Of Hull During The Thirteenth Century, Floyd Winfield Snyder

History ETDs

The history of the port of Hull during the thirteenth century has presented a problem for historians in which has never been completely solved. This problem is centered around the traditional building of Hull in 1293 by Edward I. According to this tradition, Hull did not exist until this time. Evidence in the chronicle of the monastery of Meaux and those close and patent rolls, however, indicates that Hull was a port of some importance in the thirteenth century.

The report describes several opportunities for collaboration and names of potential resources, but describes a fraught political situation where collaboration must be conducted privately for fear of backlash for the Scandinavian scholars involved.

World War II Documents of Special Interest

Communication from Nazi SS Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler to the Ahnenerbe (an institute founded Himmler and others whose purpose was to research the archaeological and cultural history of the ‘Aryan’ race and later, the occult as well). This institute had been moved to the village of Waischenfeld in Bavaria in 1943 to escape Allied bombing.

Translation:

From the Reichsführer, Field Command, 29 February 1944. To the Ahnenerbe, Waischenfeld.

If I remember correctly, Prof. Tratz's research shows that application of sea squill (Scylla) is one of the best means of combating rats.
