Observations On The School Systems In The United States And Switzerland, Erich A. Klee

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

One of the recurrent themes in the long history of U.S.-Swiss relations has to do with the reciprocal interest in each other's educational systems. Americans went to visit the schools and institutes of Pestalozzi and Fellenberg in the early 19th century and returned full with ideas of how to improve schools over here. They had successors who time and again hoped to get inspiration for their own work by studying how the Swiss went about the important task of educating the young.

The Tripolitan War, 1911-1912, John D. Lyon Jr.

All Master's Theses

This paper presents an analysis of the forces of the "new imperialism" that led Italy to war with Turkey in 1911-1912. The interests of the Powers of Europe and America in the area of the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa are examined. The focal point is a resumé of the military aspects of the Tripolitan War. The concluding chapters deal with diplomatic reactions to Italy's conquest of Tripolitania and the judgment that Italy did not benefit from her imperial adventure.

François Pierre Guillaume Guizot: An Intellectual Approach, Elbert Hardy Cave May 1971

François Pierre Guillaume Guizot: An Intellectual Approach, Elbert Hardy Cave

Dissertations and Theses

The problem of this study was to present an intellectual picture of a man who is too often written off as a mere politician and a failure at that.

In approaching the problem, his works were used heavily, though availability was a problem. François Guizot, the man studied, wrote profusely, on a large variety of subjects, including philosophy, religion, history, political theory, and education. All of these areas were covered in the study. His private papers and correspondence are, for the most part, unpublished, though the eight volumes of his Mémoires were extremely helpful.

There are many good biographical studies …

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

I am glad to inform you that in 1970, our financial position remained favorable. This could be attributed first of all to the agreeable experience that the majority of our members had paid their annual fee without further request, although in some cases, the treasurer's efforts were required in the form of reiterated reminders, when the members seemed to have forgotten to pay their contributions. So the result is quite satisfactory, as from the 229 ordinary members 206 paid for 1970, which means a percentage of 89.95%.

History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Switzerland, Dale Z. Kirby Jan 1971

History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Switzerland, Dale Z. Kirby

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis gives an account of the establishment and development of the LDS Church in Switzerland without attempting to record a comprehensive chronological history. Instead, emphasis has been placed on beginnings and major historical developments.

In 1850, T. B. H. Stenhouse began teaching the "restored gospel" in French-Switzerland, at Geneva. Proselyting began in German-Switzerland in 1854. Despite mob violence and opposition from the clergy, press and civil authorities, some 9,846 joined the Church and 4,700 of these emigrated to "Zion." The discouragement of emigration, along with new emphasis on missionary work and improved proselyting methods, brought an unprecedented growth in …

Heresy And Popular Protestantism In England, 1527-1553, William Saffady Jan 1971

Heresy And Popular Protestantism In England, 1527-1553, William Saffady

Wayne State University Dissertations

Recent scholarship has devoted comparatively little attention to the popular aspects of the English Reformation, despite an increasing appreciation of the role and importance of sectarian religious groups in sixteenth century life. Much work has been done on the nature and scope of non-maglsterlal Protestantism on the continent, the so-called "Radical Reformation", but these studies have largely Ignored the presence in England of a contemporary movement to restore primitive Christianity together with an ethical religion based on Scripture. There was a deep current of what might be called "Protestant" feeling in England that had little to do with either the …

They were all of the same type, namely honorary offices, to be manned by honorary consuls. Honorary consuls, as distinct from consuls general and consuls, are not career officers. Thev receive their nomination in recognition of personal achievements - at their place of domicile. The newly elected honorary consuls come from such diverse walks of life as private enterprise, physics, sociology, business, engineering, textile industry, medicine and hotel industry. In this they reflect quite well the modern make up …

This past summer the Swiss American Historical Society lost the services of its Secretary and Newsletter Editor, Lukas F. Burckhardt. Dr. Burckhardt, after many years as Labor and Cultural Counselor at the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, was promoted to become chief of the Chultural Section of the Swiss Political Department in Bern and he felt that he, therefore, hadto relinquish his SAHS offices. Knowing better than anybody else how much Lukas Burckhardt meant for ouor Society, I was very reluctant to accept his resignation, yet in the end could do nothing but honor his wishes.
