The Origin Of Property In Land: Paul Vinogradoff And The Late Xixth Century English Historians, Caroline Phillips Stoel Jul 1973

The Origin Of Property In Land: Paul Vinogradoff And The Late Xixth Century English Historians, Caroline Phillips Stoel

Dissertations and Theses

One of the problems which has intrigued English historians for over a hundred years is that of the position of the common man in early England. Was he a freeman working land held communally by the village, or was he a serf laboring upon the land of an overlord? Since this question of freedom is inextricably interwoven with landholding concepts the problem may also be stated another way: Did private property in land exist from the earliest times, or is that institution the result of centuries of appropriation by individuals of land originally belonging to the commmunity as a whole? …

Contributions Of Peter Pallas To Science And Exploration In Russia, Robert C. Parker

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis presents an account of a prominent eighteenth-century European naturalist, Peter Pallas (1741-1811), in the setting to which he contributed his scientific talents--the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. A complete outline of Pallas' life is presented for purposes of continuity, but the heart of the thesis is presented in chapters four and five, which combined, relate the major features of Pallas' career in Russia. These two chapters are set against pertinent background material, most of which is involved with the institution itself which supported Pallas. The St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences is surveyed in its origin and development in …

Introductory Remarks, Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

It is a great pleasure to present in this newsletter Part Two of Professor Heinz K. Meier's absorbing sketch of the history of the Swiss American Historical Society. He shows ppw many minds tried their best in making the organization relevant, and their efforts remain an inspiration to those engaged in carrying on what they had so enthusiastically begun. Success based on competence and unity of purpose does not come easily as Professor Meier's story clearly shows, but the perspective of time reveals past crises as seemingly unavoidable growth pains and selfless respect for the work of others as perhaps …

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

This book will be especially welcome to Swiss Americans who do not read German, yet are interested in keeping in touch with their country of origin or want to introduce it to their grown children. Ven Salis, widely known in Switzerland and beyond, can serve as a stimulating and sensitive guide to an understanding of the nature of the Swiss polity, of its past struggles, and of its present attempts at self-definition within the broader European and world community. A lucid and vivid style, well recreated in this translation, and a fair balance between controversial essay, disciplined historical sketch, and …

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Have you not sometimes wished to know in some detail how your (Swiss} ancestors, say of the 18th century, have lived, what kind of daily or unusual troubles they have faced, and what hopes and fears have sustained them? Derek Bowman's translation of t he autobiography of the "Poor Man of Toggenburg" makes just such a portrait available to American readers. It was painted by a writer who was unusual less in his external life-path than in his clarity of vision and in his power of description.

History Of The Swiss American Historical Society, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The decade of the 1930's was a difficult time for most Americans with the depression blighting untold families and individuals. The Swiss Americans, like other ethnic groups, had an additional cause for concern inasmuch as the decade was characterized by isolationism in foreign relations and a wave of nativism at home. The introduction of immigration quotas in the 1920's indicated that the United States prepared itself to put obstacles in the way of free access to the country. Due to the depression the quotas were not even used up by most European countries. The "distant magnet" had lost much of …

Due to necessity as well as a series of unforeseeable circumstances, I was the only officer of the Swiss American Historical Society to attend our annual meeting in New Orleans. This is the reason why the report about the meeting is written by me rather than the secretary or another officer.

Swiss In New Orleans, John Geiser Iii

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In April of 1718, Pierre Le Moyne , Sieur de Bienville, Commandant General of the French colony of Louisiana, founded the City of New Orleans. For the next half century this was to be in reality a French city, named for the Regent and with streets called Toulouse, Chartres, Dumaine, Bourbon, Dauphine, and Rue Royale laid out according to the proper French plan around the Place d'Armes. The buildings were of a definite French style and the cultural and social lives of the settlers were as French as they could make them. The most popular French governors were the ones …

History Of The Swiss American Historical Society, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

On Independence Day 1927, on the occa sion of the Swiss Singing Festival, a group of Swiss Americans living in the Chicago area decided to found a historical society. The idea had been in the air, so to speak. For some time , persons of different background and living in different parts of the country had been working diligently in that direction by encouraging existing Swis s societies to add another dimension to their activities and by gathering materials about "famous Swiss." They were annoyed and concerned "by the fact that every outstanding person of Swiss origin was claimed by …

The History Of Medical Relations Between Switzerland And The Usa, Erwin H. Ackerknecht Feb 1973

The History Of Medical Relations Between Switzerland And The Usa, Erwin H. Ackerknecht

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

When in a symposium concerning the medical relations of Switzerland to other countries reports are given on the relations of Swiss medicine to German, French, Italian, English and Austrian medicine, the reasons are obvious. But it might be at first sight surprising that the USA are added to this traditional list of neighbors. This surprise is partly a consequence of outdated technological and geographical thought. Actually, through the airplane, New York is as close to Zurich as by railroad are Hamburg or Paris. We should become conscious of this new situation. But partly doubts remain legitimate. Have the relations between …

Changing Western Images Of Russia During The Reign Of Catherine Ii, 1762-1796, Janet L. Menze

Dissertations and Theses

The question of Russia’s relationship to Western European culture has been discussed by historians of Russian civilization for several centuries. This study aims to broaden the understanding of that relationship by investigating some of the conditions of eighteenth century Russia and Europe which led the Western Europeans to formulate an image of Russia, of Russian civilization, and of the role that Russia should play in Western European affairs. This study attempts to provide the views of a cross-section of eighteenth century Western Europeans and Americans toward the Russia of Empress Catherine II, 1762-1796.

Major Sources Of Genealogical Information, Paul Anthon Nielson A. G. Nov 1972

Major Sources Of Genealogical Information, Paul Anthon Nielson A. G.

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Genealogical research in Switzerland is unique in many aspects because of several national characteristics. The physical terrain and political neutrality of Switzerland have virtually withstood the plagues of war which have ravaged the continent. Four offical languages - German, French, Italian, and Romansch - are spoken in many dialects by the Germanic and Latin peoples who are united through the Swiss Confederation. Caatholicism and the protestant Swiss Reformed Church are two predominant religions. Finally, and perhaps most important of all, Swiss rights of citzenship (Heimatberechtigung) are based on the medieval form jus sanguinis, the lineage of an individual.
